ACL Surgery...1 year later

For those who wish to avoid the knife, there is an alternative when suffering a torn ACL. You can fore-go surgery in favor of muscle strengthening exercises. I tore an ACL when I was 17 and due to the lack of diagnostic tools and no orthopedic specialist in the Virgin Islands it went undiagnosed until I was 46.

I went on to play football in my senior year of high school and over the years I have played flag football, water-skied, run 5k & 10k events, and played racquetball and tennis. Currently I play softball regularly and incorporate squats and deadlifts in my weight-lifting routine.

About the only thing that I cannot do is run downhill for long stretches. I competed in the 8-Tuff Mile competition in St. John 3 years ago which entailed running downhill for the last 3 miles of the race. The next day there was some swelling in the knee and it was then that the torn ACL was diagnosed by a doctor, and then confirmed with an MRI.

So yes, it is possible to do nothing with a torn ACL except rehabilitate it and still actively compete in recreational sports.

Someone needs to change their Venus razor cartridge. :silly: :jk:

Glad the surgery went well.

ROFL...too funny. I totally thought that when I took the pics. I really need to shave. It had been 3 days when I took the pic. Being a woman is so high maintenance.

I hope you will have a great recovery and that it heals properly.

On another subject...

You and Candace have great legs. I love nice, long legs and you two have really nice legs. Just sharing a nice thought here. Did I mention that I like nice, long legs? :D

aww, thanks. ;)

I had my best friend paint my toe nails just for the pic, but then never got my feet in the pic. I'll take some more pics in a couple days, this time I'll shave first. lol.

I think that you should see how long you can go WITHOUT shaving your legs!!! Now that would be entertaining. Give the doctor something to look at when he's checking your knee. Ask him if he's happy with your hair growth.

Actually we've only seen ONE leg in the pictures. We're all assuming she's not a one-legged (former) rugby player.:D

Glad to see you're on the road to recovery Lori.

Expect your leg to be a giant bruise starting either today or tomorrow and lasting roughly 4-5 days.

I had my ACL replaced the same way, shin incision, scope holes, hamstring tendon. Follow the rehab by the book. Don't try to do more because right now you have your knee and your hamstring that are injured. I popped a hamstring with mine because I tried to swim too early.

With the ACL the recovery should be anywhere from 8-14 months for the average adult.

I can definitely feel the bruise. I'm rotating my ankle to help blood flow and slight bending when I stand up w/ my crutches. I can't use my hamstring at all; it's like it doesn't exist...it's a really weird feeling. The doctor wants me to do these exercises where I have a towl around my ankle and pull back. I actually have to have someone else do it for now. That way I can get the range of motion without stressing my muscles. I'm only moving it to about 45 degrees or so.

When I had my shoulder surgery 8 years ago, I couldn't lift my arm for a couple weeks..you should have seen my pit hair..Disgusting! LOL

When I was in boot camp, we obviously didn't have time to shave. about the 6th or 7th week, we all looked like a bunch of hairy men. Again, gross!

Day 7- i need to set my alarm for the middle of the night pain pill time. I woke up again, a few hours after I should have taken them...not fun. Everyone keeps trying to get me to sell my pain meds. Hell no. for one it's way illegal and 2....I actually need them, as much as I hate pain meds.

Any updates? What's the latest? Hope the recovery is going well.

a little bit. Things are going well. I have one more week til I have to go back to work. But I work in an office, so getting around on the crutches won't be too bad. I can put a bit less than 50% of my weight down. Feels really weird though, like learning how to walk again.

Once my sterystrips(sp?) come off, I'll post a new pic. And yes, I can shave! LOL

Thanks for checkin in. ES and Direct TV have saved my sanity!:D

and look who was the last to post...aww my fav old guy:silly:

Well one year later, and I'm running. I didn't snowboard at all this winter and that was really ****ty, but I decided not to chance it. I gained a total of 16 lbs, and am losing it as we speak. I can squat about 125 lbs, my "lil" leg is growing muscle back and is nearly the normal size.

It's amazing what one year will do to change a persons life. Crazy to realize how much you depend on your limbs, but can adapt without one for awhile.

I spent nearly 5 weeks on crutches, I'm a big baby.:silly: Then used a cane for another couple months (work has lots of stairs).

I want to thank ES for helping maintain my sanity, MTH for reminding me to NOT get hooked on Vicadin, and all of my other ES family for really being awesomely wonderful through everything.

PS, thanks Slacky for finding this, even MTH couldn't!

you'll probably look back on this thread and laugh when you're sober. ;)

HAHA, I so did laugh..I must have been pretty drugged cause I seriously don't remember that chatter w/ Dreamingwolf guy, but he was a dick. :silly:

sure was funny to go back and read it all....and see the pic of my knee. I'll have to take one tomorrow of the healed scar to compare.
