CrazyZeb
Patriots Still Pursuing PerfectionDespite Super Bowl loss, 18-1 football team wants "19-0" trademarks APRIL 21--Three months after their bid for an undefeated season ended with a Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants, the New England Patriots are continuing to pursue trademarks on the phrases "19-0" and "19-0 The Perfect Season," records show. While the team may have been expected to withdraw its applications after finishing at 18-1, a Patriots lawyer recently amended the original filings to correct a typographical error, a clear indication that the organization remains committed to securing the marks (perhaps Bill Belichick & Co. are anticipating perfection in the 2008 season). On January 17, days before facing the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship Game, the Patriots filed the trademark applications, which, if approved, would allow the club to place "19-0" and "19-0 The Perfect Season" on a wide variety of toys, DVDs, clothing, sporting goods, and other knick knacks. As seen below, on April 11 the Patriots tweaked their original United States Patent and Trademark Office filings to correct a misspelling. The team wanted to make it clear that they seek to sell toy banks, not "toy bans." http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0421081pats1.html What ego

DWinzit
As far as the ego thing, they are a ****y bunch beginning with the coach. I don't blame them for wanting the trademark. They sure came close to 19-0 last year. They had a great opportunity due to great FA acquisitions, a favorable schedule and very limited injuries. dfitzo53
I don't see how you can trademark a record. What happens when any other team in any sport at any level goes 19-0? Do the Patriots get royalties from every newspaper in the country? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I just really don't get it.
FanboyOf91
Can the Patriots pile up any more bad karma?
coolbeans
I thought it was reported before the superbowl that some guy in Colorado tradmarked both sayings 3 months beforehand. I'm wondering if they are having their lawyers try and screw that guy over. If I was the league or any other team, I'd be trying to block this. Any team to completes a perfect season should have the right to market merchandise comemorating it without having to give the patriots a cut of the loot. dfitzo53
I think there can be royalties involved. The Bulls did this with "3 peet". 3-peat is a little bit different than 19-0. 19-0 is just a record. It's used by anyone about any team that happens to have won 19 games and lost none. The article states they are trademarking two phrases, the second is "19-0 The Perfect Season".

pjfootballer
It's all Pat Riley's fault. He originally wanted to trademark 3-peat when the Lakers won 2 straight in the late 80's, but was thwarted by the Pistons in 1989.
