New Mock from Fanball

GIBBS LIVES

Recommended Posts

1. Miami Dolphins: Chris Long, DE, Virginia

Previous pick: Chris Long

Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano will want some defensive line depth in case Jason Taylor hurts himself when trying to dance.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jake Long, OT, Michigan

Previous pick: Jake Long

The Rams spent three selections on defensive tackles last year and a third-round pick on the position in 2006. They still need help there, but they could also use a bookend to help their offensive line. Long has done nothing to hurt his stock, either at the combine or the Michigan pro day.

3. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

Previous pick: Matt Ryan

For the sakes of Roddy White, Michael Turner, and any other Falcon with the potential to have decent fantasy football value, we're praying for this pick. That sound you hear is Chris Redman sighing and handing over his keys to the offense.

4. Oakland Raiders: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

Previous pick: Glenn Dorsey

Do you think Al Davis cares that the club just gave a bunch of money to Justin Fargas? Or that they reworked Dominic Rhodes' contract so that he could return? Or that Michael Bush may be ready to contribute. Davis is crazy about speed, and McFadden is blessed with very fleet feet, amongst other attributes.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

Previous pick: Ryan Clady

At the risk of sounding cliche, the Chiefs may find themselves in a good position to trade down. There will be teams that covet Dorsey, Vernon Gholston, or (if he falls) McFadden, and the Chiefs are best off working a deal if they can't select Jake Long. Dorsey's balky knee could see him slide out of the top five, but he seems too gifted to fall far.

6. New York Jets: Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State

Previous pick: Darren McFadden

The Jets should be locked into Gholston, unless McFadden falls to this point. Eric Mangini already has a couple DE/OLB types in Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace, but that other New York team proved last year that having an abundance of pass-rushers is a good thing. Plus, grabbing Golston would upset the Patriots, which is always a priority for the Jets.

7. New England Patriots (from 49ers): Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy

Previous pick: Vernon Gholston

The Patriots did some patchwork by signing cornerbacks Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders, but that's not enough to replace Asante Samuel and Randall Gay. Scouts seem divided on who the top corner is between McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, Aqib Talib, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

8. Baltimore Ravens: Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida

Previous pick: Mike Jenkins

Unless the Ravens fall in love with Brian Brohm or Ryan Clady or Sedrick Ellis or, heck, they have a lot of needs. We're still thinking cornerback, but John Harbaugh's club is a bit of a wildcard. Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister are both over 30, and the former appears to be on the decline. And did we mention that Harbaugh was a secondary coach in 2007?

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

Previous pick: Sedrick Ellis

When your team finishes last in the NFL with 22 sacks, isn't anything special against the run, and loses an end like Justin Smith to free agency, we figure it's a good idea to address the defensive line. We imagine Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh will piss and moan about Ellis' signing bonus.

10. New Orleans Saints: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee St.

Previous pick: Leodis McKelvin

The Saints haven't been shy about looking at small school guys, which is why we feel safe picking DRC corner Aqib Talib. Plus, this kid rocked the combine. The Randall Gay signing will help buy Rodgers-Cromartie a bit of time.

11. Buffalo Bills: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

Previous pick: Malcolm Kelly

The Bills scored big with the Pac-10 in 2007 (Marshawn Lynch, Trent Edwards), but it doesn't make sense for them to add the shorter DeSean Jackson to their height-challenged receiving corps. The club toyed with signing free agent Bryant Johnson, and the 6-4 Kelly will add the much-needed complement to Lee Evans.

12. Denver Broncos: Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State

Previous pick: DeSean Jackson

Judging by the rumors, owner Pat Bowlen may authorize the team to skip this pick in order to save money. The Broncos hope last year's third-round pick, Ryan Harris, can replace retired left tackle Matt Lepsis, but Clady could immediately provide depth and possibly challenge for a starting job.

13. Carolina Panthers: Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh

Previous pick: Jeff Otah

John Fox and Marty Hurney have already done a lot of legwork along the offensive line. Mike Wahle and Justin Hartwig are gone, Jordan Gross is returning, Travelle Wharton is moving to guard, Ryan Kalil is taking over at center, and Keydrick Vincent was added at right guard. Now all they need is another tackle, which is where Otah or Vandy's Chris Williams will come in.

14. Chicago Bears: Rashad Mendenhall, RB, Illinois

Previous pick: Rashad Mendenhall

The offensive line is terrible, the defensive line needs some help, and the receiving group looks miserable. Despite those glaring issues, the Bears could have a tough time passing on Mendenhall. The club finished last in the NFL in yards-per-carry and bust Cedric Benson is rehabbing a broken ankle.

15. Detroit Lions: Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon

Previous pick: Aqib Talib

Few franchises are as well-equipped to read a running back injury dossier as the Lions, who recently released Kevin Jones. Stewart's stock took a hit when he underwent toe surgery, but Matt Millen isn't one to let such silly flaws get in the way of him drafting an offensive "skill" position player.

16. Arizona Cardinals: Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas

Previous pick: Jonathan Stewart

When did this turn into a fantasy football draft? Running back, running back, running back? It's no secret that the Cardinals are eager to find a complement (or replacement) for Edgerrin James, and Jones immediately adds some much-needed speed to Ken Whisenhunt's rushing attack.

17. Minnesota Vikings: Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson

Previous pick: Phillip Merling

Erasmus James is one hole-punch away from filling his Buy 10, Get 1 Free knee surgery card, and Kenechi Udeze is currently fighting a form of leukemia. So, yeah, the Vikes could use a little help at defensive end. Florida's Derrick Harvey is making a strong push up the board and could also go here.

18. Houston Texans: Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas

Previous pick: Felix Jones

With the top running backs off the board, the Texans will turn to defense. They (over)paid cornerback Jacques Reeves this offseason, but the secondary is still a major concern because of Dunta Robinson's ACL and hamstring injuries. Talib also happens to be a good value at this point.

19. Philadelphia Eagles: Keith Rivers, OLB, USC

Previous pick: Calais Campbell

No, the Eagles won't draft a receiver, unless Donovan McNabb is at the controls. Andy Reid loves to address offensive line and defensive line in the first round, but we're going a little off the norm with Rivers. The Takeo Spikes release caused a shift at linebackers, with Stewart Bradley moving to the middle and Omar Gaither switching to the weakside. Rivers gives them another, much-needed body in the rotation.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DeSean Jackson, WR, California

Previous pick: Brian Brohm

No team has been as active in free agency than the Bucs, who have signed 11 players and re-signed another four (not counting Kevin Carter). One of the acquisitions was wide receiver Antonio Bryant, but his presence won't stop the Bucs from grabbing a receiver early in the draft. Offensive tackle and cornerback also make sense.

21. Washington Redskins: Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt

Previous pick: Sam Baker

Do you go with the pick that makes the most sense (Williams) or the one that seems more likely (receiver Limas Sweed)? Jon Jansen and Chris Samuels have been holding down the ends of the Redskins line since 2000, and it's about time to groom a future replacement. The right side of the Redskins line was a mess due to injuries and a lack of depth in 2007. Yes, the team needs receiver and defensive end help, but head coach Jim Zorn knows that a quarterback can't perform without protection.

22. Dallas Cowboys: Justin King, CB, Penn State

Previous pick: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

King tore up the combine turf by running a 4.31 in the 40-yard dash, and he was reportedly impressive during the recent Penn State pro day. Oh, and the Steelers (next pick) were out in full force to watch this All-Big Ten selection. The Cowboys would like to see a top-four corner fall, but King is a nice consolation prize.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Braden Albert, G, Virginia

Previous pick: Chris Williams

The Steelers were able to hold onto offensive tackles Max Starks and Trai Essex, at least for one more year. However, they did lose guard Alan Faneca, which makes the interior position a more immediate need. Albert's blend of strength and quickness will endear him to Steelers fans.

Who's FanBall? I'm not being a jerk, I'm just wondering, since I've never read his/her work before. Are they a historically accurate Mock Draft expert? Or are you posting this simply because they have us picking a position that most other mock drafts don't even expect us to draft at all, let alone in the 1st.

If we do go OL in teh 1st, Branden Albert pwns all.

This mock seems to be alot closer to reality then what I've seen so far.

But the skins pick is waaaaaaaaay off!

Why couldn't we send Betts or our additional 3rd round pick to the Cardinals and then take Merling?

Because, A) Why would the Cards want to trade their 1st for Betts and a 3rd? And B) If our FO was dumb enough to take a DE in the 1st, we should at least get a pass rush specialist, not a well-rounded DE who's deficiency is Pass Rush.

Albert would be the more likely pick

he could play over kendall next season and has the talent to play either tackle spot in the future.

and would give stephon hyer a chance to prove himself as jansen's heir.

by drafting williams he'd start the year on the bench and might not even play if a tackle got injured because of Hyer.

Last year our makeshift line did pretty well. Though another o-lineman wouldnt hurt. Im afraid Jansen is just about done. Kendall is old as hell and we need to replace. Hayer is a good addition but we need to work from there.

We need a D-lineman as well. Some secondary help as well. Smoot sucks, Springs is about done, and Rogers isnt gaurenteed to come back from this injury and be able to perform. Also, will Doughty really be able to be a full time starter without that extra motivation that was in place?

We can definitely get a receiver round 2 or 3.

We have lots of picks, we need to address our needs and not go off of maybes

So how many picks do we have. They have been to alot of pro days.

I think we have 9, but we're probably going to go to a ton of pro days. Even if we don't want a player thats the highlight of a Pro Day, we'll go for kicks. Why else would we have gone for Matt Ryan and JaMarcus Russell's Pro Day.

Agreed. I also like the idea of getting Albert because not only is he a beast of a Guard, he can also play tackle. So if push comes to shove, Albert can shift around a bit.

No one is trading for Ladell Betts. No one.

No one is trading for Ladell Betts. No one.

I'm not saying we should, but why not? You think the Jets wouldn't mind him if the price is right? Course, their right price might be completely off from ours, but its not impossible that Betts can be traded.

Unless you mean "No one is trading for Ladell Betts," based on the fact that, well, we simply won't trade him because we value him. Because that one kidna makes sense.

This draft really makes you wonder about the virtue, if it were possible, of trading down out of first round to early 2nd, maybe picking up a 3rd in process. Then, assuming compensatory, you have 2 - 2nds and 3-3rds. You could draft whatever high-graded tackle drops, and get a DT, DE, CB, WR, OL all fairly high-round, quality players. Ideally, you get a pick in the teens 2nd round, and several picks. This is really what we need - a decent number of quality players to develop.

I don't know if Tackle is our most pressing need, however, I have not been impressed with Sammuals for the longest time, probably since his seocnd or third year to be honest with you, speed rushers own him everytime, see Simion Rice.

So I mean its whatever, the truth is we just need to wait and see, and hope it pans out. The last few #1 picks we've done pretty well. Rogers is the only one who hasn't really done his thing but I still have some hope for him.

Draft time is the most nerve wrecking time of the offseason easily.

I dont understand the Samuels bashing. You have no idea how valuable he is.

Why are so many Skins fans desperate to trade either Betts or Portis?

I agree totally. Portis cant go a whole season without some type of injury, hopefully nothing major, but we have to have a legitimate back-up. Betts is that guy. Forget about last year with Betts. He didnt put up big yardage because he didnt get many carries. He has proven that when given a chance, he can produce. Perhaps Rock could be a good back-up to Portis but we dont know that. As for all you Marcus Mason homers, what has he done so far? Nothing!

So he's not even a thought to be the #2 back. Give Betts a break. The guy has been a good player and a stand up guy for this team.
