Where do the Redskins rank as an All Time NFL Franchise??

Thats the question. Are the Redskins really an illustrious team that has a deep history of winning?

Or

Are they a team who hasnt won a superbowl in over 15 years? Is the Washington Redskins head coaching job a prestigious position, a wanted job, like say N. Carolina hoops?

Just how good are the Redskins?

Well lets run some numbers:

Last superbowl win: 1991 season (Jan 02)--Thats 16 years.

But there is more to the story:

The Redskins, created in 1932, rank 4th in all time wins.

They are tied for 4th in super bowl titles won. Only 3 teams have won more and 5 have won the same. Thats means that 24 teams have LESS superbowl wins than the Redskins.

Only 1 team has represented the NFC in the superbowl more times than the Redskins. That means the redskins have gone to the superbowl the second most out of any NFC team (tie with 1 other).

So only 3 teams have won more superbowls and only 1 team in the NFC has won the conference more.

and We rank 4th in all times wins.

But what about consistency? Well the skins rank 10th in playoff trips. Not great, but pretty good.

Have we had a dominate team? 14-2 Superbowl Champs. Pretty dominate there.

So it should be obvious that the skins are a top 3 NFC team of all time.

Where do they fall in the entire NFL? Id say right around 5. You figure out who is ahead.

True, it'd be better to compare a win to loss ratio.

And why no mention of our pre NFL merger champinoships? ;)

Here are some more stats. I dont like pre super bowl era stats. Thats why i didnt say them. I was trying to keep it NFL age only. But had to throw wins in.

FYI:

14th in win percentage but again being sold old gives alot of losses as well.

Tied for 5th in all time championships.

Someone else can do the analysis of post season appearances and playoff records, but here is the regular season summary since we last won the Superbowl, which is now 16 years (1 year for every week of a regular season) ago

Which puts us in a group with the Jets, Falcons and Rams (though 2 of those teams reached/won the SB in that period) with a winning perentage around 44% (put the Saints in there too)

the only teams below us are Detroit, Cleveland, Cincy, Arizona and the expansion Texans.

I mean, how depressing is that? 2 out of every 3 years we've had a losing season.

Some might say all that matters is championships - but teams that consistently make it to the post season are hard to ignore.

Prior to the SB years, we won two championships the first eleven years of our existence -- with ten teams in the league. That's real good. But we had made it to the championship game six times between 1932 and 1945. It's hard not to respect a team that can make it to the championship game that consistently.

We had a horrible time between 1946 and 1968. The Redskins only had three winning seasons after 1945 -- until Lombardi was hired in 1969.

We began winning again in the 1970s with George Allen and we made it to the Superbowl in January 1973, but lost. However, we did make the playoffs consistently, until Allen retired.

With Gibbs hired, we began to make the playoffs consistently once again. As everybody knows, we made it to the SB 4x, and won three.

We're now in another dry spell. The Redskins are one of only three teams in the NFC who haven't won a divisional playoff game in the past sixteen years. The other two teams are the Arizona Cardinals and the Detroit Lions.

However, all-time, I think the Redskins rank very highly as a winning franchise. I've never been to Canton, but I bet the Redskins are well-represented there.

Check the link below. I think it's interesting because you can see such a strong relationship with Redskins teams who are able to get to the post season consistently and the head coach of that particular era.

It is hard to strictly go by stats though because take a team like San Francisco. They were basically the laughing stock of the league for a long time, then Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott etc....come along and they go on a 10-12 year run that statistically makes them one of the best franchises ever, but all of their accomplishments happened in about a decades time and then they slowly dwindled back into a laughing stock.

When evaluating the history of this franchise, I think we need to break it down into two (2) distinct era's. There's the era, before Dan Snyder arrived and the era after Dan Snyder arrived. Therein, you will see where the greatness of this proud franchise lies......

I was being slightly biased but just before the Super Bowl, I did an all-time ranking based on championships and had us at 5th. The Giants would probably take our spot now if I updated this, sadly.

1. San Francisco 49ers: 5 Conference Championships, 5 Super Bowls (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994) If they get that far, it seems like it's guaranteed they will win it.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers: 6 Conference Championships (1995), 5 Super Bowls (1974, 1975, 1978 1979, 2005)

3. Dallas Cowboys 8 Conference Championships (1970, 1975, 1978), 5 Super Bowl (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1995) I did everything I could to rank them as low as possible without being unfair.

4. Green Bay Packers: 9 NFL Championships (1929, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965), 4 Conference Championships (1997), 3 Super Bowls (1966, 1967, 1996) Add up enough of those old championships and they count.

5. Washington Redskins: 2 NFL Championships (1937, 1942), 5 Conference Championships (1972, 1983), 3 Super Bowls (1982, 1987, 1991)

6. New England Patriots: 6 Conference (1985, 1996, 2007), 3 Super Bowls (2001, 2003, 2004) For the moment at least, they are down here.

7. Oakland Raiders: 5 Conference Championships (1967, 2002), 3 Super Bowls (1976, 1980, 1983)

8. Denver Broncos: 6 Conference Championships (1977, 1986, 1987, 1989), 2 Super Bowls (1997, 1998)

9. Chicago Bears: 6 NFL Championships (1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1963), 2 Conference Championships (2006), 1 Super Bowl (1985)

10. New York Giants: 3 NFL Championships (1934, 1938, 1956), 4 Conference Championships (2000, 2007), 2 Super Bowls (1986, 1990)
