Jerry, the GM, back in control

With two first-round picks in 2008 draft, Jones steals the show

12:10 AM CDT on Sunday, April 29, 2007

IRVING – The criticism flows freely – as it should – when the subject is owner and general manager Jerry Jones, because he's the one constant during this 10-year period when the Cowboys have failed to win a playoff game.

But give Jones, at his wheelin' and dealin' best Saturday with three trades, kudos for his performance on the first day of the NFL draft.

Jones, who declined an invitation to move into the top five, took advantage of Brady Quinn's unexpected freefall down the draft board to acquire Cleveland's 2008 first-round pick and the player the Cowboys wanted most: Purdue defensive end Anthony Spencer, who will be converted to linebacker.

Perfect.

There were enough players on the board when the Cowboys made the trade with Cleveland that Jones felt confident Dallas would still get a quality player, so he improved the team this year with Spencer, while enhancing its future.

No other GM could've done it better.

Don't think the owner didn't enjoy every minute of it. He likes having the draft revolve around the Cowboys.

He said it reminded him of the good old days in the early '90s, when the Cowboys, using the cache of picks acquired in the Herschel Walker trade, seemingly controlled the draft every year. This year, Quinn's plummet put the Cowboys in control.

The Cowboys traded their first-round pick, 22nd overall, to Cleveland in exchange for the Browns' second-round pick and its first-round pick next year.

Cleveland's first-round pick puts Jones in position to control the 2008 draft.

"We know there's a unique dynamic when you've got two No. 1 picks," he said. "You control your own destiny."

That's why Jones was grinning so broadly while discussing the trade a few minutes after the Cowboys used a first-round pick on a linebacker for the third consecutive year. Actually, Jones spoke so positively about the deal, he felt compelled to say that his excitement didn't mean he thought the Cowboys fleeced the Browns.

It's just that he knows the power that comes from having two first-round picks, especially when Cleveland's pick should be a top-10 selection.

Of course, the Cowboys also thought they were getting a top-10 pick a couple of years ago, when they acquired Buffalo's first-round selection in a draft-day trade. But the Bills went on a late-season winning streak in 2005, and Dallas settled for the 11th pick overall, which happened to be DeMarcus Ware.

The Cleveland Browns stink.

As one of the league's worst teams, there's no reason to think that will change this season, especially if Quinn eventually becomes the starter. If that happens, Jones will have the ability to package the picks and move up high enough to grab an elite player, a difference-maker.

Jones knew the Browns were desperate to get Quinn, especially with rumors flying that Kansas City, picking one spot behind the Cowboys, wanted the Notre Dame quarterback. Jones said at least one other team offered Dallas a first-round pick, but its second-round selection wasn't high enough to entice the Cowboys.

As soon as Jones finished the deal with Cleveland, he and his son, Stephen, immediately began working the phones because they wanted to grab Spencer at the end of the first round, where he would be a good value.

Even though Spencer was the second-best pass-rusher in the draft and finished his senior season at Purdue with 26 tackles for loss, it would've been a slight reach to select him with the 22nd pick. So the Cowboys dealt the second-round pick they received from Cleveland, their own third-round pick and a fifth-round choice for Philadelphia's first-round pick, the 26th overall.

As strange as it sounds, considering the Cowboys have used four premium picks on linebackers in the last three seasons, the Cowboys need Spencer badly.

Ware is the only dynamic pass-rusher on the roster.

The 3-4 defense, the way Wade Phillips coaches it, doesn't work without two terrific pass-rushers. Actually, he had three of them – Shawne Merriman, Steve Foley and Shaun Phillips in 2005 – and there were times when all of them were on the field at the same time.

Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is best when the coaching staff moves him around, allowing him to take advantage of specific matchups. Greg Ellis, a quality pass-rusher, ruptured his Achilles' tendon last October, and there's no way to tell what type of player he'll be this year.

At 260 pounds, Spencer should have no problem playing on the strong side against tight ends and tackles. He'll start the season as a pass-rusher in obvious passing situations, and his role will evolve based on how quickly he adjusts to the NFL.

But the Cowboys are glad to have him.

"This is about as close to as much action as we had in a long time," Jones said, "You've got to have good information, you've got to have it quick and you've got to rely on it when you're wheelin' and dealin' like that."

As much as I despise those :censored: in Dallas, a part of me was laughing after that trade they worked with Philly. Then Philly takes a QB!  I wonder if #5's mommy is warming her blog up to cry about how the Eagles disrepected her son by taking a QB that early. :D

:eaglesuck :dallasuck

This is what I put in the other thread:

In the days when Jimmy Johnson was drafting for Dallass, the Pokes had some of the best drafts, players and teams. When JJ left, Jerrah took over the drafts and the team drafts stunk. Then when Parcells came in, the Dallass talent base got better because, lo and behold, Parcells was the head honcho picking the players. Now, Plastic Man Jones is all of the sudden the man in charge of getting players and presto, all the picks are scrutinized. See a pattern. Jerrah, is NOT, a good evaluator of talent. You guys better feel lucky you got Cleveland's pick, because it might save face having a sure fire talent near or in the top 10. Seriously, all Redskin homer and Dallass hatred aside, Jones sucks, I mean sucks at evaluating talent. The history is there. beleive it or not.

Getting a Browns' future #1 is a big coup, and will likely be a top 3 pick.

Don't be so sure - people were sure the 1st rounder we sent to Denver fo Campbell would be top 10, maybe top 5. The 1st rounder the Bills sent Dallas for JP Losman turned was thought to be the same. (btw - how did passing on Steven Jackson work out?)

I think and really hope the Browns will be much improved next year...

If anybody thinks that Jerrah has changed his stripes here is something to chew on:

4th round: Isaiah Stanback QB - "...The Baltimore Orioles selected him in the 45th round of the 2006 MLB draft."

Sound familiar?

He is a great athlete. Baltimore selected him in the MLB draft even though he had not played baseball since high school 4 years ago

I will absolutely concede his obsession with QBs who were drafted to MLB teams.
