Did Dan Deep Six Martz to Lions?

The Lions are pathetic. These teams make SO much money it's ridiculous. To shell out an extra 500,000$ for a coordinator with the experience and proven track record that Martz has is a bargain. The guy was a head coach... he would help any staff tremendously.

Detroit will continue to learn the hard way... with losses.

And for 500 grand...chicken poop just having an offense that will entertain and put points on the board will put arses in the seats...ahem...counter-balancing the "price" difference.

like I said.. there is a reason .....

Danny, thank you for not being a Ford.

Good point. Simply a bad business decision. Sometimes you have to wonder what these people are thinking. Apparently they cannot put the success of their organization above their own pride. How pathetic!

The fact that Matt Millen still has a job is UNBELIEVABLE. You guys all think Bang is making fun of Matt in his cartoons, but he is not. I think they can't fire him for fear of violating some mentally handicapped hiring rules or something.

As Dr. D pointed out...the Lions have a ton of talent at receiver that is GOING TO WASTE. Christ...we had a good offensive year and Snyder went out of his way to make us better. The Lions were in the bottom 5 in offense, and are unwilling to pay Martz to improve them??

The Lions are terrible, and will always be terrible with this kind of management. Thank GOD for the Danny. :)

True. Being a Skins fan living in Mich. I can tell you 1st hand the bad choices from Harrington, DB's Terry Fair and Bryant Westbrook. O-lineman Stocktar McDougle, Aaron Gibson, QB Andre Ware.....The list goes on and on. Drafting Harrington over DB Q. Jammer was a brain fart. But a bigger 1 imo was drafting WR M. Williams over DE. D. Ware or LB's D. Johnson or R.O.Y. S. Merriman. The Lions start a 40+ yr old LB E. Holmes. LB was the move, but Millen went WR for the 3rd straight year. WR when the Lions already had Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Az Hakim, and Kevin Johnson. Made no sense. A buddy of mine (A Lions fan) called me teasing me. He knew I originally wanted Williams. But I explained to him just how dumb that was. This behind some of the coach hiring blunders. This team is a mess from top to bottom! They been cursed with baaad luck too. O-lineman Andelsek was killed in a car accident in '90, another solid o-lineman (M. Utley) was paralysed in '91. That was the Lions best season. They finished 12-4. The Skins throttled them 2x that season. 45-0 in the opener, and 41-10 in the NFC Championship. The only playoff win in Barry Sanders HOF career was in '91. A 38-6 win over Dallas just before meeting the Skins. The final straw that frustrated Barry was in the mid 90's, the Lions made a straaaange trade with New Orleans. The Lions traded a top 5 pick for LB Pat Swilling. That pick turned out to be multi-pro bowl O-lineman Willie Roaf. To date? The Lions o-line wreaks, while Roaf still makes pro bowls. I just wanted to give my Skins fans some history of just "Why" the Lions wreak.......there is your answer.

Don't the Rams still owe Martz for the rest of his contract?. I thought the $2 million Martz would get would count against what the Rams owe him - Martz makes the same whether the Lions pay him $1 or $2 million.

I can't believe that Martz would go out of his way to save the Rams money, so maybe the disagreement is mostly an ego thing. I could see Mike Martz saying: "If Al Saunders is getting $2 million a year, then that's what I should get".

Another option could be that Martz took a look at the job and the management and demanded dollars that he knew the Lions would never pay.

:2cents: I think all the other owners are just rich jerks. They have all that money but doesn't want to spend it. The fords are a perfect example. Now if Dan was to go and hire martz for real then the other owners would probably try to get some kind of a block spending on the redskins. Dan Snyder wants to win and he willing to do what it takes to make that happen.

The ultimate in stingy owners lies in the sport of baseball.....

Where a team can have a 19 milion dollar payroll....

Football is extravagant in comparison.

The amazing thing is that they have about 25 players on the team for only $19 million.

In basketball, you could almost cap it there with only 15 players.

But in all sports I like an owner that isnt afraid to try to buy the best players for the best money.....unless they happen to be in NY, Dallas, or LA

Danny Rocks!!!!!!!

Every time a team lets a good assistant go to another team they could have done what Snyder did and offer them money to stay. They are idiots.

Martz probably thinks he is a better coach than Saunders since he was the OC for the Rams offense that won a SB, and the head coach of the team when it lost the SB to the Pats. He might be right too, he just wasn't a good head coach.

Coaches cap cant happen, the league would get sued.

And coaches DESERVE to get paid more. There is nothing more important to an NFL team than its coaching staff. Drop one 4 million a year player off the team and add a 2 million a year great coach(in this league that pay means you are one of the best), and your team will improve. For whatever reason up until now, NFL GMs havent figured that out to well. Then again this is the crop of GMs that with 8-9 vacancies, hired a bunch of no name coaches and fired proven great coaches such as Martz and Sherman for one bad season. This is starting to look a bit like Soccer in europe, new coach every 20 days.

Two things to add here:

First, to rail against Matt Millen for not ponying up an extra $500,000 is just baseless. Millen does not have the ability to say who gets what inthat franchise, the purse strings are held (tightly) by the Ford family ownership group. Had they (the owners) said OK to $1.5 mil., I'm certain Martz would be Lions OC right now.

Second, I heard on the radio this am that there may also have been some language in the contract whereby Martz had to "guarantee" that he would fulfill the 3 years and not leave for a Head Coaching job before the contract expired. That may well be in Milen's realm, and if so, Millen should be cast as an idiot. But, it may have been a decree from the ownership also. Either way it is an idiotic stipulation to think that a guy just removed from a Head Coach position would agree to that...especially if he were to come in and turn the Lions' offense around. Turning that offense around in one year would likely have made Martz the #! hotest HC property next offseason.

Millen is worthless, but at least he makes great homophobe comments. How he still has a job is beyond me. I wan't a cap though, but thats because I am a dirty socialist.

I strongly disagree, the hair dressers and interior decorators have more fight than the lions players did.

Hey I have no complaints about how the Lions Front Office is continuing to screw up, just like a certain political party just move out of the way and let them continue to mess up their chances to regaining power and smile when it happens.

Detroit is not some mom and pop ownership in a small market. These guys have alot more money than Danny to go along with revenue sharing.

They have a right to be cheap skintflint bastiges like they are in the auto industry

There's another difference between Saunders and Martz that may be the key here. Sauders looks to me like a guy who is basically a career coordinator. Sure, he was the head coach in San Diego for 2.5 years, and he still is open to interviewing for the head positions, but I have every confidence that he's our coordinator for the next 2-3 years.

Martz, had he signed, would not have been with the Lions for more than one year. He views himself as the head coach and will be hired as such next year by someone (e.g, Arizona). Why pay a guy top dollars to completely change your offense only to watch him jump ship the very next year?

It could have been seen almost as a financial investment for the team. If they are able to generate some excitement for the coming year by bringing in Martz, that would in turn generate more income for them at least at the beginning of the year. I think it was pretty cheap of the Lion's to not pay 2 mil for Martz.

You can't blame Martz. The guy took the Rams to a Super Bowl. How amazing is it that Sherman, Martz and Tice (well maybe not as amazing with Tice) have to struggle to get Coordinator jobs. I like the fact that the Skins will dictate the market.

I liked Millen as a Redskins and as a commentator but can't understand how he is still the GM with Detroit.

Perhaps the decision to not pay Martz more was related to the fact that Ford is going to cut 30,000 jobs - Billy Ford Jr. must need the extra cash.

I agree, but this wasn't Millen's decision. The Ford family wouldn't let Millen give Martz the contract he wanted. No matter how good or bad a GM you are, if you have a cheap/clueless owner you're not going to do any good.

The Fords run their team like they do their auto company.

They turn out garbage no one buys, then have to cut 30,000 jobs.

They are rich cheap-ass ****s.

They have a worthless football team, and no one watches.

I wish the Fords would buy the Cowboys and the Giants.
