We Need A Pass Rusher On The D-Line!

I'm a little worried that our D-Line doesn't have a pure pass rusher that can pressure the QB. There is no way we can allow a QB to sit in the pocket and just expect our secondary to shut down our opponents all the time. And we can't depend on blitzing just to get pressure, somone other that Griffin is gonna have to step up.

If we had a DE that could put pressure on the QB, our Defense would be even better! I like Daniels and Wynn but I just think one of them is gonna have to step their game up and get us some sacks or hurries. We need that from our front four, we need more pressure up front!

Every team wants a Dwight Freeney. They are hard to come by.

I think we can survive on a combination of blitzes, good secondary play, and consistant run stopping. I agree, when we aren't blitzing and just rushing 4 down linemen, the QB can prettty much file his nails back there without getting hit.

There's more than one way to play good defense, and the ultumate stat is points allowed. As long as Gregg Williams is running the show, it's not the defense that I'm worried about.

Courtney Brown had a decent game last week...too bad LaVar didn't sway him (if he tried.)

Broncos get some production from Brown

BY FRANK SCHWAB

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - (KRT) - Defensive end Courtney Brown hadn't played in an NFL game for 364 days before he made his Denver Broncos debut Sunday.

Brown missed almost a full calendar year of games because of injuries, which is the story of his NFL career. Last year there was a foot injury that cut his season short. He suffered a dislocated elbow early in the 2005 training camp.

But the oft-injured Brown showed against San Diego why many teams wanted him this offseason after Cleveland cut him. He played well in passing situations and picked up a sack, bull rushing left tackle Roman Oben into the quarterback.

The Broncos were enamored with Brown's potential as long as he was healthy, which he is now.

"The problem with Courtney is he hasn't been healthy," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "When he's played, he's played extremely well. The people that have looked at Courtney on film and watched him play, he's played extremely well."

The Broncos have to decide how much Brown plays. Shanahan said Monday that Brown is ready for full-time action, and he was a starter at the beginning of training camp. But Brown hasn't played 16 games in a season since his rookie year of 2000, and continuing to use him as a pass rusher might help keep him healthy.

The Broncos saw against the Chargers that Brown can have an impact even in limited duty.

"Right now he feels good and he made a couple of big plays in the game," Shanahan said.

Brown's sack was exciting for his teammates, not only because it's a sign he's ready to contribute. They knew what he went through leading up to that play.

"I was so happy for him when he got that sack," defensive end Trevor Pryce said. "He told me before the game, `I haven't played in a year.' That was the happiest I've been for me not sacking the quarterback. I went berserk. I just went nuts. It couldn't have happened to a better guy."

The person who might have been the least excited about the sack was the understated Brown.

"With Courtney, he's the type of guy that's just doing my job," said defensive tackle Gerard Warren, who was Brown's teammate in Cleveland. "Just line up and play the next play. He doesn't get excited."

Brown has never complained about his bad luck with injuries, either. He was the first overall pick of the 2000 NFL draft, but he played only 31 games over the past four seasons because of knee, biceps, ankle and foot injuries. When he suffered a foot injury last Sept.19, that was the end of his 2004 season and a disappointing stint with the Browns.

He dislocated his left elbow during Denver's practice Aug.4, missed the entire preseason and the Broncos' first game but didn't whine about once again getting set back.

"You can't focus on that," Brown said shortly after suffering the injury. "You go through things in life and you have to push through it."

Our defensive line was absolutely DOMINATED on Monday Night. They are truly the one squad that should take NOTHING positive from this game. I was embarrassed for them and I only pray that at least one of them reads this thread. Pathetic.

Did you not like the way they stopped the run?

I don't think we need a Dwight Freeney and that's not what I meant. We just need our ends to step their game up. There is more than one way to play good defense, we're proof of that. Theres only 2 things a D-Line is responsible for:

1. Stop the run, Which we do consistantly and 2. Pressure the QB, which we're havin' trouble with right now. Like I said, it's only been 2 games so hopefully Daniels and Wynn start to get rollin' as the season goes on

I agree that our D-line is having a hard time getting after the passer. They are pretty good against the run, but it is rough seeing us bring four, and get nowhere near the QB. I'm actually quite surprised we've been so conservative with the blitzes, since that seems to be the only way we can get pressure. If you don't get pressure, it is hard to force the mistakes that give you turnovers.

Williams can go with 3 DL-men and put Chris Clemons on the line as the pass rush specialist. Or, they can use Arrington occassionally for that role.

Despite the DLs run stopping prowess it seemed that the Cowboys were able to get pretty good consistent yardage on off-tackle runs. Something for the coaches to look into.

DE's take 2-3 years to develop. I remember Dexter Manley's first year. The offensive lineman tried to help him with an equipment issue...the announcer said that the O-Line guy didn't want Dexter to leave the game...he was being dominated.
