New Dream Theater Album!!!

It is finally June 7th!!! I refused to download any leaked copy of the new album, as I respect that band soo much I will not take anything leaked when there is an intention of releasing something.

Anyways, so far the album is not disappointing me, and Im only on track 5. "The Root of all Evil" was an awesome beginning! What is everyone elses response to it? I know there is a thread already, but this is the official release day, so I thought a thread should be made for today.

The song "I Walk Beside You" definitely is my least favorite of the album, seems sorta on the poppy side. However, up to track 7 now, still no problems yet for me. This album leans more on their Images/Awake albums I feel.

It's much more atmospheric than any album they have ever done. I'll say that. I need another listening or two to really see how I feel about it. It has a feel like they tried to layer more, compositionally speaking. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the actual songs for the most part, though.

Everyone I've talked to says it sounds like Train of Thought.

Train of Thought was heavier, IMHO. This is more light-Progish. Marillion comes to mind, IMHO, but obviously with more technical elements. I reserve the right to change my opinion after a few more listens, though... ;)

see, I felt that way as well, especially with Train of Thought. 6 Degrees was pretty good, especially the title song. Definitely a mixture there. Train of Thought may have annoyed some people. Scenes From a Memory used to be my favorite, but I lately found the lyrics a bit lame.

I still think this album is definitely better than some of their more recent releases, except for the 4th track. Album is not as heavy as ToT was.

Om, gotta agree with you, but LaBrie does fit the band well, even if he does get annoying a bunch.

I think you should. The first track is awesome, after that I think is up in the air. I personally like most of the songs, but different people will have different views. Im still trying to listen to it more to decide what I think now.

I felt the same way, I had no anticipation for this album. Train of Thought sorta made me shift directions, been more of a Maiden fan this past year. Yesterday I suddenly remembered I had something to buy, but I couldnt figure out what, but when I finally did I rushed to Best Buy.

Picked it up today and it is quite different from their other albums. However that is what makes them so great. Many people grow frustrated when they come out with albums that are completely different from the last few. They are a PROGRESSIVE Rock band. Being versatile is what they do.

Curious after listening to Octavarium a few times... does anyone else hear the "tracking" kind of effect on James LaBrie's voice at tunes that sounds like computer pitch correction, or is it just me?

Just curious. It sounds almost exactly like the pitch correction you hear on Britney songs, live theatrical shows, or whatever. When Laura and I went see "Movin' Out," the pitch correction was so bad... you just don't know... sometimes the main singing guy's voice would warble when he did vibrato and it was obviously computer-controlled.

I finally picked Octavarium up.

The first song definately rocks, very cool.

After that, it's hit and miss.

One thing is for sure though, I cannot stand DT's singer/lyricist. I was listing to the album on my mp3 player at the gym over the weekend and the song Panic Attack came on.

Did the singer "google" the words panic attack and then proceed to write lyrics based on the symptons? Wow... A 10 year old could have done better.

I agree, Code, and feel the same. I actually like Panic Attack from a musical perspective, but I rarely pay attention to DT's lyrics anymore. I've learned not to drive myself nuts just cringing at how bad they are... ;)

There are really two guys in this band who are the managers (Portnoy & Petrucci) and the rest are just employees of sorts. Jordan is kind of in-between since Pornoy & Petrucci wanted him in the band, I suppose. Portnoy is an amazing drummer, but man that guy has an ego the size of the Grand Canyon.

I agree, Panic Attack is an awsome song musically. Very cool, but MAN, the lyrics just plain suck big time.

IMO, if DT didn't have keyboards, They'd be one of my favorite bands. I just don't like the way keys are used in the band.

Portnoy is excellent, but IMO not in the same league as Peart or Carey. It's probably more of his choice of playing than his skill. I'm sure he can play anything he wants.

I always dug the music more when Kevin Moore (no pun intended) was in the band. He could pull the reigns on them to a degree. Then again, he left because he didn't like the direction they were taking, so maybe he could only take so much of it.

Derek Sherinian... that deal sucked to me and I felt bad for him. They wanted Rudess all along, but he chose to go with the Dixie Dregs instead. Then Portnoy makes some **** & bull excuse like the fans never warmed up to Sherinian's goofy personality and he wasn't somewhat serious like the rest of the band.

Guess those guys never really paid attention to the guys in Maiden when they weren't on-stage. Those guys are geeks to the 10th degree.

I'm sure Portnoy is technically an incredible drummer, also, but he seems to have only an on/off switch now and not just a dimmer, if you catch my drift. Petrucci has gotten the same way lately. Carey, Peart and Alan White have a much greater sense of dynamics along with their technique.

Oh, yeah... and while Peart's lyrics may be bizarre, Portnoy's flat out suck... ;)

Portnoy writes lyrics...??

Totally agree about the dynamics. That's what I was trying to get at.

I like keyboards, in many instances, but I don't care for them lingering constantly in the background.

Not only does he write lyrics, he writes most of their lyrics.

You're welcome...

It's not like The Police where they split songwriting chores equally (it just happened that Sting's tunes were the ones that became the biggest hits). Portnoy really does write the vast majority of their lyrics. A ton of it is rather cringe-worthy.
