Redskins Release Morton

By Gary Fitzgerald

June 3, 2005

The Redskins have released running back and kick return specialist Chad Morton, the team announced on Friday.

The 5-9, 203-pounder has spent the last few months recovering from knee surgery. Wide receivers Santana Moss, Antonio Brown and James Thrash have experience as punt and kickoff return specialists, so Morton's role on the team seemed uncertain heading into training camp next month.

Morton met with head coach Joe Gibbs on Thursday afternoon and was informed of the team's decision to release him. Upon leaving Redskins Park, Morton was optimistic that he would land with another team by late July, when training camps around the league typically start.

Chad Morton

Morton, a five-year NFL veteran with prior stints at the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets, joined the Redskins in 2003 as a restricted free agent. He has served primarily as a return specialist on both punts and kickoffs.

In 2003, Morton appeared in 15 games, starting two at running back due to injuries to Ladell Betts and Trung Canidate. Morton posted 44 kickoff returns for a 23.4-yard return average and had 19 punt returns for a 9.9-yard return average. In a Week 13 game against the Saints, he returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, the fourth of his career.

Morton was sidelined half of last season with a torn ACL in his knee. He underwent surgery on the knee last December. In eight games, Morton returned 13 punts for a 6.2-yard return average and 16 kickoffs for a 22.4-yard return average.

In an interview with Redskins.com in March, Morton acknowledged that he was uncertain of his future with the team. He said he expected to be back at full health by the start of training camp.

"I don't know what they have in store for me," Morton said in late March. "I don't even know if I'm going to be playing here."

Morton added: "I don't know how much I'm going to miss this offseason and training camp. If I end up [getting cleared to practice] late in camp, I've got to show coaches what I can do pretty fast. I've got to be in great shape."

So is an injury settlement due now or what? I thought there were guidelines involving the release of an injured player who has not been cleared to practice.

Anyone have a definitive answer? Or is it a grey area, like the OTA "controversy" ?

I think it's about 500,000, but one of the cap gurus around here could probably tell you for sure.

$540,000

I never liked this fruitcake. I'm in the good riddance camp.

Morton never showed me that second gear that great returners have. He could sidestep a few guys here and there but he doesnt have that "next level" speed that you see in antonio brown and santana moss.

imho Brian Mitchell never had it ('next level speed') either.

I don't think you can look back at Morton's career with the skins and call him out for it.

He had a year under Spurrier and a year on IR... I kinda feel sorry for him.

His 540K salary goes away but a player making 380K will now move into the top 51 so the net cap savings is 160K. The maximum Morton could get on an injury settlement is 250K so if he believes he'll be OK by camp he probably won't even raise the issue hoping to get signed elsewhere and earn over twice that amount somewhere else.

Oh and they now have 1M in dead player charge which will count against the 06 cap and 500K of his original 05 cap hit remains as a dead player hit in 05 which I think puts them around 17M for 05.

I liked Morton, but I don't disagree with this decision. We have enough capable return people that left Morton expendable. More cuts will be needed to sign our draft picks.

Gardner will be coming soon. He has that big cap hit.

Yeah, but BM seemed to have a knack for returning a kick or 2 for a TD every year, and he was almost always healthy. And he could get valuable yards after being hit many times. Morton went down at first contact every time.

I don't feel too sorry for him. He got paid a lot for doing very little.

Yeah but brian ran with a full head of steam. He would pummel you if you tried to arm tackle him. Morton on the other hand, if he didnt side step you hes definetly going down on first contact.:2cents:
