It’s OK to step backwards when you’re escaping pressure. It depends on where the pressure is coming from and the defenders aiming point. Pressure is coming from up the middle, do you want to slide to the side and then step up. If pressure is coming from the outside and aiming towards the quarterbacks back shoulder, want to step up and then slide to the direction that the pressure came from. If pressure is coming from the outside, but the quarterbacks front shoulder, you want to step back and then roll to the side of the pressure came from. Driving and using voice recognition. Forgive any typos.

I wouldn’t say he led that drive. My recollection is that Michigan took over 1st and 10 from their own 25 down by 7 with their season on the line and the coaches proceeded to call two run plays and then JJ threw one right into a defender on 3rd down that fortunately fell incomplete and then a little dink pass on a speed out in the flat to a motioning Blake Corum that he took for 30 yards. His only other completions on the drive were a tipped pass that fell into the hands of a wide open receiver and a TD pass from the 4 yard line. Saying he led the drive is just people trying to convince themselves that he did more than he ever actually did which is the whole story on this kid.

And up until this year, he would also take a ton of sacks under pressure. The only reason that he didn’t this year is because he was coached to run whenever he got moved off his spot, and the reason he was coached that way is because he is so bad at passing under pressure. When he tries to play the right way… The way he will have to play in the NFL, he has the talent of a late round pick. When his coaches tell him to take a shortcut because he has elite speed and is two or three years older than most of the kids on the other side of the ball who also aren’t all professional football players, he looks great.

Can we all agree that a common trait that many, If not all of the top quarterbacks in the league have is the ability to escape pressure and make throws off schedule? The guy in KC that everybody thinks is good, that’s the thing he does better than anyone and that’s the big attraction with Caleb Williams, right? And can we agree that all of the guys who can do this, demonstrated the ability to do it in college? And then can we agree that Jayden Daniels has not demonstrated the ability to do this in college?

I played poker with Cooley a few times when he was a rookie. A few years later I ended up in the tent where some players and their families go to eat post game and he remembered me and was kind enough to come say high. I was so drunk that I slurred through some recollection of how I had just won $1500 at the poker game two days earlier. He got a very confused look on his face and walked away.

I can’t say I watch film like that so not sure but that example is a hell of a throw so I doubt he routinely executes passes like that one specifically. Throwing with anticipation is a standard element of the drop back passing game though. Here’s a very basic explanation that was made for kids in flag football, but it’s a pretty good visual for understanding the idea. basically, the greatest amount of separation usually happens when the receiver makes his break. You want to design a play so that a quarterback is hitting the top of his drop as his first read is making the break and the quarterback is starting his throw, but he’s not sure if he’s going to throw it yet. he doesn’t look to see if the receiver is open and then start his throw… He starts his throw and then decides if the receiver will be open. The closest analogy I can come up with is a batter in baseball who has to start his swing every pitch, but he doesn’t know if it’s going to be a ball or a strike yet and has to make that determination after he’s already started the process. if it’s not open, he will hitch to his next read who hopefully is making his break at the same time and the quarterback would then start his throw again.

Don’t fret me brother. Peters don’t have no plan. Peters has plans. Plural. Everything will be alright.
