  1. Mariota is playing this smartly. He will be able to shop himself to teams that he can at least compete to be the starter. I fully expect his market value will be less than his current contract but more than his play so far warrants. If he truly thinks he is starter worthy, he probably ends up with a 1 year prove it contract betting he can set himself up in a better contract next year. That might work for the WFT.
  2. I expect Scherff signs a 3 year 38.5 mil. A bunch could be given in a signing bonus if it helps the cap #’s. Too much in my opinion for a OG, but no doubt we are better as a whole line when he was on the field. Front load guaranteed money and build around him if he can stay healthy. If they tag him at 18 mil somebody should get fired. Sucks for Brandon but this isn’t a great year to be a free agent guard.
  3. I expect we will spend some of that $50 mil in cap space on a true #2 WR, so our priorities might change going into the draft. It may turnout that a WR is the best guy available at 19, but it won’t be quite the glaring need it is today. I think we can also pick up a reasonable quality OL, resign Scherff, and find a decent LB in free agency. I think we will go after a QB in the first or second rounds.
  4. Predicting moves now is a shot in the dark. There are going to be a bunch of pretty good football players available in the next few weeks that would make the team better. The wild card in this whole mix is the QB position. If a QB becomes available that Ron really wants all bets are off.
  5. Seeing a couple new mock drafts predicting 6 QBs going in the first round. Lawrence, Wilson, Young, Fields, Jones and Mond. While I don’t place any value in any one of these mocks, I am noticing a trend of including Jones and more recently Mond in the first round. I still expect Mond to be a available with our first pick in round 3. I like the young man and think he has a big upside, but the first round is way to high.
  6. I fully understand the desire to get “the guy” and if we really could get “that guy” without expending all available resources I’m on board. But there’s only a couple of “those guys” available and they will be really expensive. I don’t think we are just a QB away from winning a Super Bowl so I think a more methodical plan is probably best. But my job is not on the the line, if Ron thinks otherwise than I hope we get the best guy out there.
  7. I’ve been watching a few film reviews and QB evaluations and am getting more interested in Kellen Mond from A&M. Looks like he has a very large upside and a skill set that matches Turner’s scheme. Looks like we could pick him up at our pick in the second or possibly the third. Mond, along with the beer man and Allen, could carry us into the season. If he realizes his “potential” we have our next guy, if not, we haven’t invested a huge amount of capital in him. Thoughts? Pick up a true #2 WR in free agency (i.e. Curtis Samuel), maybe a LT in the first round, a CB and another WR or S in the third and I think we are in business.
  8. My friends who are Cowboy fans absolutely don’t want to pay Dak. Their nightmare is they offer the FT again with the plan to sign and trade and nobody will trade for him and they get stuck with a 37 million dollar Dak. I think Dak is very serviceable on a good team, but he is not the guy to carry a team. He is definitely not someone we should be interested in in that rent district. Dallas has a problem.
  9. Wentz has aleast proven he’s capable of playing good football. You don’t forget how to play so there is reasonable expectation he could return to form under the right circumstance. I’m not confident we have that situation but I can understand taking the chance if the price is reasonable. Darnold has never played winning football. He sees ghosts! I have no confidence that he is an upgrade to what we already have at any cost. Im not sure about any of the QBs in the draft, but if they really like one of the guys other than Lawrence maybe we just go get him whatever the cost and hope they choose wisely. Based on statements from the decision makers, standing pat doesn’t seem to be an option on the table. My best guess if we don’t keep Alex Smith; we sign Cam Newton on a 1 year deal to compete with Kyle Allen and Taylor Hienecke to start.
  10. What a bargain, there’s about 6 guys on that list we can probably get relatively cheaply right now.
  11. Two firsts for Carr is crazy. I’d much prefer to continue building with those picks and look elsewhere for a bridge QB until we can find our franchise guy.
  12. It wouldn’t shock me if we use our first and one of our thirds to move up a few spots to get a QB in the draft. I just don’t see any of the top 5 guys falling to us a #19.
  13. If it’s true that Washington made a better offer I’m glad Detroit didn’t take it (regardless of the reasoning). I think Detroit got a very good deal and the Rams got out from under a QB contract they didn’t want.
  14. For what Watson will cost in draft capital the team that gets him better be ready to win right now. I really like DW but I’m not ready to mortgage the future for him; we still have too many holes. I think Stafford is a good fit, but I wouldn’t get in a bidding war for him either. His age plus medical history has to keep the price tag reasonable for this to be worthwhile. A second and one of our thirds would be a great deal, but I think it’s going to cost more than that to get him. His back injury scares me enough I wouldn’t go any higher. I think picking up a free agent like Winston, Newton or similar and a good early draft(1-3 rounds) is the best path. Bring them in to compete with the beer man and Allen (assuming he is healthy) and look for our potential franchise QB with a later round developmental pick or next year. All this could change depending on the draft, if someone the team likes (Young, Jones) falls to #19 we jump and go on from there. Lots of rambling to say I don’t think we are just a good QB away from winning a Super Bowl. We definitely need one but not at the expense of all our other needs.
  15. It seems the way of today’s NFL is athletic, mobile QBs. I think the WFT really needs to follow suit. There is a reason all these older stand in the pocket and throw QB’s are available (excludes Watson). If they aren’t sold on a QB that is available to them this year I’m good with a stop gap guy and hope to get our guy next year. I think our #1’s are too valuable to trade on a stop gap QB.
  16. We don’t need elite play, we need consistently good play and stability at the QB position. We need to not be in the QB market every year. I’ve given up on trying to determine what college QBs are going to translate well in the nfl, but they pay people a bunch of money to figure that out. If there’s a guy they all like available when we pick take him. I think I’m in favor of picking up somebody we have seen can play in this league without giving up our #1 and picking up a stud tackle or WR with our first round pick. I think when it is all said and done Stanford or potentially Carr could both be available without using our #1.
  17. If Ron is making all the football decisions (coach centric), Rob Rogers is the contract/cap guy and Kyle Smith is the scouting/player personnel guy what exactly is Hurney’s job? Is this the end of Kyle?
  18. D. Watson isn’t going anywhere. They will hire a coach he wants and they will press on.
  19. I really think due to the lack of true depth in the QB position this years draft class, the WFT will look at QB options via free agency first. Maybe a round 3 QB to put in the mix at a reasonable cost. I expect best player available with a slight lean towards OL and WR. I think we can get a quality OL and WR in the first couple rounds.
  20. Heinicke reminds me a bit of a younger Colt McCoy. Smart guy on the field, good decision maker but a mediocre arm. He’s probably not the face of the franchise, but he can probably be a great backup rolling into next season. I’d rather role into Sunday night with Alex, but I definitely think we have a better chance with Taylor than we would with Dwayne if Alex can’t go.
  21. His mom gave him a C+. I think she is a pretty tough grader. Chase is going to be everything we hoped he would be if he can stay healthy. I’m not convinced he is 100% right now and the offensive lines are still game planning to stop him. I’m optimistic that he and Sweat will get there groove on and be dominant for years to come.
  22. I’m not implying that it is easy or pouting. I fully understand in the NFC East it is particularly important to be able to stop the run. I’m simply stating our current OL is not very good. I sincerely hope that those responsible for such things acknowledges this and has a plan to address the problem.
  23. Been watching a lot of QB breakdowns of Haskins and Allen; I didn’t realize how bad our OL has really been. This is not a defense of Haskins because he did not play well at all, but the line didn’t help. We allow free runners way to often and any kind of delayed DL stunt seems to be beyond our OLs ability to adjust. Allen reads D’s a bit quicker and gets rid of the ball quicker so he looks better, but we need serious help. Between free agency and the draft if the OL doesn’t improve they will not win. Maybe Charles develops into a starting OT, maybe not but I still believe games are won within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. We have dedicated much effort and resources of the defensive side, time to give some to the other side. Until then, we better run the ball well or we won’t win another game.
  24. Two hops on the deep ball doesn’t usually play so well in the nfl, but it sure resulted in a great toss.
