  1. I never watch basketball. I don’t ever care about the tournament. Sitting at a bar on a work trip and am so invested in St Peter’s that I may have a heart attack. Come on pea****s!
  2. Freeman's such a Nat killer, I hope he's out of the division. But if ATL needs a DH and a 1B, they could use both Freeman and Olson. Scary team.
  3. Doooooo is one of the most delightful people ever to wear a Nats uniform. I don't know if he can still pitch, but I'm thrilled that he's going to be around. Cruz is perfect for the after-soto lineup position. Love these moves. I'm not sure how good the nats will be, but I think they'll be fun to watch.
  4. The GOP is actually trying to kill women. If women can't get prompt and appropriate care when they have an ectopic pregnancy, they will die. This is not a rare issue. The most generous interpretation of this bill is that the drafters are just complete morons and don't understand basic biology and anatomy and they lack the intellectual curiosity to try and learn. That's the best case scenario. Describing a removal of an ectopic pregnancy as an abortion is just so, so stupid. The less generous interpretation is that they would rather women die than ever allow any reason to enter the "debate" around abortion.
  5. The cruelty is the point. Every policy the GOP espouses is surgically targeted to either make rich people richer or to make poor and/or vulnerable people suffer more. Often both. I can't possibly understand how people support them.
  6. Svrluga's WaPo article about Zim's retirement was perfect. Brought a few tears. I really think we've been so lucky to have such a likeable team for a long time now. And Zim was at the heart of everything.
  7. -14F (-31 wind chill) for my 1-mile walk to work this AM. Thank goodness for good gear.
  8. I probably pay more attention to the Hugos than any other awards, because they pretty much determine my fun reading list for the next year. Congratulations!
  9. I've been arguing with a long term patient of mine for almost a year trying to talk her into getting a vaccine. Been managing her complex underlying disease for a few years now. She died over the weekend after about a week of COVID19. Last thing she told me before getting sick was "why do you care whether or not I get the vaccine?" The last 2 years have been awful. I keep thinking things will get better soon, but then something like this happens...
  10. Doc here. There is conflicting and unclear marginal evidence both ways regarding whether there is benefit or not to switch between moderna/pfizer. If there is any benefit at all, it is very small. I would strongly encourage getting whatever booster is available and not worrying about it.
  11. Max is personally responsible for more of my joy over the last decade than just about anyone on the planet other than my immediate family (maybe including some of them too). I don't care about the Mets. I'll be a fan of his forever.
  12. The precedent and law says, if I interpret it correctly, that as long as he felt scared at the very moment he pulled the trigger, his claims of self defense are valid and this verdict is accurate interpretation of the law. He is in no way held accountable for the many other facts of the case that I find damning. I think this kid is responsible for those deaths, and I hope they haunt him. I doubt they will. I think this aspect of our laws is tantamount to authorizing vigilantism. I wish the laws were different. I don't think this is a moral verdict, even if it is a legal one.
  13. I live in Rochester, MN. My kids attend public high school here. The schools are fine, fair, and doing their best. The schools are generally underfunded and overcrowded, but not as bad as a lot of areas. They would hardly be described by any honest person as controversial or agenda-driven. Of course there are issues, but CRT is absolutely not one of them. The people behind this lawsuit (especially the lead lawyer) are the craziest, stupidest, most malignant members of this otherwise great community. This is a giant hassle and a big embarrassment.
  14. I hate Atlanta, but I don't think they're a bunch of frauds and cheaters. Go Barves. Reluctantly.
  15. Got my C19 booster (and flu shot) earlier today. No change in ball size. No third eye. No magnetic superpowers. No symptoms. Still have to deal with meetings all afternoon. All in all very disappointing. (Not really. Go get your vaccines. They are wonderful miracles).
  16. Washing hands is DEFINITELY helpful. C19 can be spread through airborne transmission, but droplet transmission is also prevalent. Handwashing is certainly not adequate, but it is still a good idea. People who think its the most important thing are still dumb.
  17. I just got a message from a patient of mine demanding that I sign a medical vaccine exemption. I've been caring for him for years for a complex, life threating disease. I've used the best scientific advancements and new medications to quite literally save his life. We've always had a good relationship, or so I thought. Now he has all these crazy ideas and is questioning my medical expertise and imagines that I'm part of some goofy conspiracy because I recommended he get vaccinated. I don't know how to respond to this stuff. I'm incredibly frustrated.
