  1. The goodfellas inspired spoof happening now on cbs is painful. I hate it.
  2. I just booked 6 international flights for April, May, and June. God help me....
  3. What a mess. Most pathetic "party" in history. I'm getting a schadenfreude headache.
  4. If you've ever done CPR correctly, or seen it done, you know the other players on that field were in no shape to go back to playing. They just saw their friend die, or come close, and they likely heard his ribs and/or sternum snap as heroes tried to bring him back to life. They saw his body flail and twitch after defibrillation. I'm certain it was awful and will haunt those who were close to him for a long time. The game was an afterthought. Thank goodness this story looks to have an unexpected and happy ending. I could care less what happens with the game. If the two teams involved agree to not continue/restart it, fine with me.
  5. Apparently he asked in writing. I bet he's still intubated. Still, amazing. It cannot be overstated or repeated often enough how unlikely and special a good outcome is in this situation. I want to know who led the on-field medical team, and I want a movie made about that person. CPR is hard and it sucks. I haven't done it in 20 years or so, and I still vividly remember the feeling of a baby's ribs cracking under my hands. I froze and pulled away. Fortunately I was part of a great team and someone else jumped right in. It is so traumatic to do it right, and it takes incredible strength, both physical, but even more, mental. Heroes there.
  6. Because Kevin McCarthy is a deeply, profoundly stupid person. Also totally shameless and unable to strategize. They have no plan. I heard someone use the analogy that this is two people playing chicken but they've torn out the steering wheels.
  7. Amazing good news. No way that happens unless everyone on the scene does heroic work incredibly fast and incredibly well. Huge bravo to everyone involved.
  8. I wonder what happens if you vote in a bunch of whackadoodles who are chaos agents who don't believe in governance or process? I guess the GOP is finding out. Hilarious.
  9. There's unlikely to be any significant news today, I suspect. We don't know what's happening inside that ICU room, but I'd guess (as a physician), that they are cooling him. This is pretty normal approach to people at risk for major brain damage. We cool patients down to 32 degrees celsius (about 90 F). This slows brain metabolism significantly and (we hope) protects against the worst brain damage from hypoxia/low blood flow. Different centers do it differently, but it would be pretty normal to do 24-72h of cooling and deep sedation before making any efforts to wake him up and see how he's doing. The cooling does come with some risk (blood clots and others) that make it a very dynamic and labor-intensive process for the ICU team, but it is probably his best chance. I''m not overly concerned about the news that they have him prone for some lung injury. CPR, done correctly, is a violent and brutal process. Probably fractured ribs, lung contusions. If you aren't bruising lungs and breaking ribs (or coming close), CPR probably isn't pumping blood in the heart. I don't think any resulting lung injury from the CPR is likely to have a big impact on his outcome. He has a number of factors in his favor (youth, previous good health, rapid CPR) that gives me some hope that he'll be an exception to the rule for out-of-hospital arrest. Fingers crossed.
  10. Just want to highlight the absolutely heroic work of the on-site medical team there. The survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is around 10%. Every second counts in that situation. The fact that they got his heart rate back via CPR and defibrillation and that he's still hanging on for now is amazing. He is far, far from out of the woods (may still succumb, of course, and who knows what permanent damage may have happened), but those people did not show up last night expecting to do CPR and they got it going about as fast as possible. I've been in medical situations where CPR needs to happen fast and it is humbling how many people freeze or panic or just can't rise to the occasion. Those folks last night are heroes. Praying that it worked...
  11. Feeling lucky to be in Minnesota right now. It’s cold here, but not a huge outlier like it is for the rest of you. We have the clothes, gear, infrastructure, plows, etc to handle it just fine. No real disruptions to anything. Good luck to anyone without power, heating, insulation, and more.
  12. -45 wind chill here (Minnesota) today. We get weather like this in Jan/Feb with some regularity. Never remember it this cold in December.
  13. I am not a soccer watcher and couldn't care less who wins, but still, the drama and excitement of this game has me totally spent. What a show. Great entertainment.
  14. I bet Trea is worth every dollar of that deal. I hate it for the Nats, but I'm happy for him. Such a cool, awesome, fun player. Ugh. I still hate the phils, but can't hate him. Not his fault that he left...
  15. If Sandy Hook and Uvalde didn't change things, nothing will. Our country is a moral failure.
  16. I hate to say it, but this Phillies team and the connection they seem to have with their fans and the whole getting hot at the right time really reminds me of 2019. I hope they pull the upset. The Astros are still cheating dogs as far as I'm concerned... Last night's game was super fun. I hope they are all as tight.
  17. I hate Philly because they are a division rival and because their fans are annoying. I hate the Astros because they are cheating dogs. NL east fans should hate the Phillies, but everyone should hate the Astros. Plus the Astros have been in too many world series lately, and I'm tired of watching them. To me, cheering for the Phillies is the obvious choice this series. I'll go back to fully hating them as soon as this is over. Grim times.
  18. I loved watching the Mets lose, but this news today is awful: 6yrs/75mil. An insane bargain. Barves have a damned juggernaut for the next half decade. I hate it.
  19. Hoax active shooter call at a high school in Rochester, MN this morning. My wife and daughter both in lockdown for most of the morning. Thank goodness it was a false alarm, but what a wretched failure of a society where these fears are common and real as often as they are.
