Football Gameplan's 2014 NFL Team Preview - Redskins

I think your preview is pretty accurate, but you are missing that Chris Baker will most likely be starting. He had a very good final 3 games when he was finally given a chance to start. He will be the skins defensive breakout player.

Btw, he has been taking all his reps with the starting DL.

Great Video!  Has me excited about the upcoming season.  I think we have the ability to make some noise.  But it's all on RG3, no more excuses, except the one about "He has a new playbook to work with, and he's thinking too much."

I'm ready for some football!!!!

That was incredibly deep analysis.  Most media outlets cover a couple superstars on offense and defense and then just say, "Well, the Skins are going to suck because they always do."

I agree with everything you said, except one item.  I think the Skins are still stuck at TE.  Niles Paul hasn't been able to put it together at receiver or TE and he's not a great blocker, but he's great on special teams (ST).  Logan Paulsen is our best option at #2 TE since he can block well and is a sure handed receiver, but he's really slow.  The problem is, from all reports, Ted Bolser is pretty terrible and looks outmatched in just about every way.  I figure he'll make the practice squad, and maybe figure it out by next season, or the one after that, but it sounds like it will be a while.

Really great analysis though.  I feel pretty much the same about every breakdown.  Really good work.  I don't look at other teams too deep until we're closer to the season, but that video makes me want to check out the other 31.  You sold me.

Man I really appreciate that gang! Thanks a lot!  I will say this...If it were me, Lache Seastrunk would be the starter. What are you guys' thoughts on the ILB position? And do you think Phillip Thomas will be a big impact this year?

With Thomas and Keenan Robinson none of us really know yet.  Thomas never made it to a preseason game even, and Robinson hasn't played in about 1 1/2 years.  Before Robinson's first injury he started to come on and it seemed like things were clicking for him.  I had high hopes for him making a smooth transition last season into the starting role, but he was hurt the first day of training camp (I was there and when he walked off the field I knew something bad had happened).

If Robinson can pull it together and stay healthy, he's the best cover LB we have, and it's not close (according to reports he looked great this offseason, but you can't judge how someone plays the run or tackles, so it's hard to say until pads go on, of course).

As for Thomas, it's like having another rookie who's had time to learn the playbook.  I loved Thomas in college, and I like him even more because he said before the draft he wanted to be a Redskin.  The positive is that he's a strong safety and shouldn't have to have an impact immediately since Merriweather played better later into last season, and because he'll be allowed to play closer to the line than he did last year, which is his natural position and the one he's excelled at in the past.  So, the things that Bacarri Rambo had a difficult time with (angles mostly) shouldn't be as much of an issue with Thomas, but again, hard to tell when he hasn't played a real down of football yet.

That's my opinion.

As for Seastrunk starting, it's hard to take away time from a guy who's been one of the best and most steady RBs in the league the last 2 years.  I definitely want to see him play, but it will all depend on whether or not he can pass block.  I have no doubt he'll do fine receiving the ball, but Helu is a good pass blocker and Lache will have to beat him out before he ever even gets on the field.  I would love to see the mix of Morris and Seastrunk with a little Helu sprinkled in.  It would be a very fast backfield with Helu and Seastrunk.

Your projection is good....and I definitely agree that we have more talent than a 3-13 record last season would indicate.

I am excited by what I have seen with Seastrunk....and also hope CT can impress Gruden.  But think Seastrunk has a lot to learn....Gruden even indicated that in one of his pressers after rookie camp.....specifically with catching the ball out of the backfield and with pass protention.  But, in looking at his college videos, he has another gear that most RB's do not have......except possibly CT.   I do not think we will keep all those RB's, and think Royster is in trouble as well as CT if he does not impress.  I am not a huge Helu fan either.....but think I read somewhere he is in last year of his contract, that and he is dangerous out of the backfield in the check-down passing game will probably give him a roster spot.

ILB is tough because we really do not know alot about Robinson thanks to injuries.....and the additions via FA are unknown WRT how they will gel with our other D players.  I would think someone like Rak or Kerrigan would take over the mantel of leadership from Fletcher.

ST play will see s large improvement, IMHO.  Think we got the coach right there....and his attitude and desire for a physical style of play will pay dividends on the teams.

Overall I agree that we can contend for the NFCE title.  I do not think Foles will have a repeat of his '13 season.....and without DJ think that the eagles may struggle a little with the deep threat....which could also impact other areas of their offense.

The 2 biggest question marks for me around my team going into '14 season revolve around Robert's play at QB.....and the HC in general, how he will react as HC once games begin.

I could see this team going anywhere from 6-10 to 10-6. I think avoiding the injury bug will matter most with regards to this team's fortunes. I know that sounds a "duh!" statement but this team does have a lot of talent now, especially on offense and at some key areas on defense (OLB for instance) but injuries to key players like RG3, Trent Williams and Reed on offense and Kerrigan, Orakpo, and Ryan Clark on defense would spell doom for a once promising season.

On the other hand, if they stay relatively healthy, this team should explode assuming the coaches know what they are doing with the talent at their disposal. I do believe RG3 will play much better for all the reasons already discussed and that much of the hate being thrown his way is coming mostly from scared Colts and Seahawks fans who are still butt-hurt that their QBs lost out on the OROTY in 2012.

Over a guy who has rushed for almost 3000 yards in his first two seasons?   And Lache has had trouble catching the ball and route running in camp.  I dunno man.... didn't you have us taking Cody Hoffman in the 3rd round?

Keenan Robinson (if healthy) and Perry Riley will start at ILB.

If Thomas has an average year it'll be an improvement over last year.  It's likely going to be Ryan Clark at free and Meriweather at strong at least initially.

Absolutely!

And while I agree with Emory on Neild, the difference between the two is Baker will almost certainly penetrate (right or wrong on his gap assignment, he is up the field) and Neild is very good about not getting moved off of his spot, but rarely penetrates.  Both are important in a 3-4 defense and I wish both luck in somehow making the team.

DC9, do you think Neild is really in trouble of losing his spot?  IMO, he's the only true NT we have, though I'm fine with Cofield or Baker there, and I honestly believe our depth on the DL is not all that great.  I'd think we'd want to keep around a guy like Neild.

First off, EXCELLENT analysis of the team!!

But you would actually be willing to unseat an absolute stud at RB for no significant reason other than you have a gut feeling about an unproven rookie who's had some issues getting things right in camp this offseason... not only does that mess up team morale and chemistry, but it draws extra unwanted attention and criticism to the club. I could give about 10 reasons why this just would't be a good move.

But otherwise great video.

Very nice job, every so often I catch one of your breakdowns and the growth and polish is evident. Could see that as a feature on a Saturday night, early Sunday morning on a local network. Well done bro.

A lot rests on the younger players taking that next step,(Keenan Robinson, Philip Thomas, David Amerson, ) Was high on Thomas out of Fresno before the injury, he missed game experience so that's a set back but I think he has the goods.

O line, teams and secondary/defense have to improve.  I expect Robert to be back on his game again.

No way would I start Seastrunk over Alfred Morris. I'd like to see them get him some touches though. Not sure how the committee will work out in the backfield yet.

I think anywhere from 7-9, 9-7 is about right. Last season was rough, pretty disastrous. But I think the team/talent especially now is better than that 3-13 finish from last season.

No chance at Seastrunk starting, I think he'll be fighting just to make the roster.

I like Perry Riley a lot of ILB. If Keenan Robinson can stay healthy, he'll start too. I also like the veterans the Redskins brought in during the offseason. Good injury insurance and they can help on special teams.

Phillip Thomas was getting good reviews last offseason before getting injured. Hopefully he can regain that form and contribute in some form and become a starter at safety next season.

Guess I just assume that whenever someone talks about our RB position competition....it is Morris, and then the field..  While I am pretty excited to see what Seastrunk can provide in action.....and think his potential is huge......no way he unseats Morris as our starter.....at least not this season.  But if CT and Seastrunk have good camps....that could unseat a couple of other RB's IMHO.

Yes. Put him on the bubble. With Tanard getting suspended, they don't have to cut Neild to make a spot for Carriker when he can pass a physical. Neild can now stay around a lil bit longer but don't be surprised if he doesn't make the final 53.

So far Phillip Thomas has had a good offseason, both at OTAs and minicamp. I believe Merriweather will be the starting ss and Clark the fs. Merriweather will be another year removed from his ACL tear and playing a position of strength in ss. That being said, it is possible Thomas replaces him later in the year.

I'd love for Seastrunk to be the number two, but at this point he may not even make the roster. He has struggled in OTAs and has a long way to go. It may be Helu as the number 2 because he is good at pass pro as well.

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about Carriker.  If they were going to cut him to make a spot for Neild he must really be valued low on the team's list.  I liked the guy, seemed like a hard worker and never seemed like he was a problem when they put him in.  Oh well.

Guess I get to use my Bones line now, "**** it I'm a doctor not a football scout."

TK, do you think that Carriker can pass a medical before camp opens?

And if yes will he be a Redskin again?

If he can, he will. They've been looking at DLine guys all offseason.

They're kicking the tires on LB Louis Corum on Monday. Last update I saw on him was he played in the UFL back in 2011. He's also played some DE.

What? Over Alfred Morris?

Loved the video though; well done.  I didn't realize Neild has been disruptive--that's good to hear.

Another big question mark for me is Steven Bowen, he is coming off a serious injury and he has got a big cap figure for a player who won't be starting. If he stays as a back-up he should take a paycut. Also we have to find a replacement for Kedric Golston he is not even in my opinion good enough to be a back-up.

I think he has to show up this year.  If we end up keeping Bowen it's down to DWorth or Nield for me.

I agree that he's the only TRUE 2-Gap NT on the team in that he basically holds his spot (Baker played NT at Hampton, but he's fantastic at end).  His knee injury was really noticable last year but it normally takes the big boys 2 years to come back.  So I hope he makes it.  I've always liked him and I've been screaming for Cofield to play DE for years now...

EDIT:  Love Carriker.  He's all heart.  If he can be healthy that's a big move, also a big if.

I agree, Carriker is the kind of role player every team needs (if healthy).  I've always respected the guy and his heart, and in 2012 it was production too.  I completely forgot about him because it's been so long since we heard anything.

It would be good to see him back, I just hope he can stay healthy this time.  He's one of those guys, like Philip Daniels, where it almost seems like his weight lifting is almost too much.  I'd love to see him maul some people this year though.
