Never in the history of modern football had there been such a ferocious battle. Historians of the time spoke of it in almost Civil War like passages.

"It was an epic struggle to win the day, to advance one's cause," noted one such historian. "Battle in its purest form, each side believing they are fighting for all that is good and holy."

When the smoke lifted that day, the victorious general could see that the carnage far exceeded his worst nightmare. In all, 106 brave young men were strewn -- in various states of exhaustion and pain -- across the field.

The general walked grudgingly to the center of the battlefield. He surveyed the gruesome scene, offering silent blessings to his brave men as he took each painful step. There, in the center of the field, he found his defeated counterpart, General Parcells.

"Please. Joe," General Parcells gasped as he lay on the field, pleading for mercy. "Don't do it. I'll surrender."

General Gibbs struggled with himself as he recalled an unwritten code of warfare. It states that "when the day is won, the battle is done." General Gibbs struggled with that thought as he gazed down at the defeated General Parcells, who appeared as though his very life-blood had been drained.

To ensure General Parcells would keep his word, General Gibbs placed his foot upon the fallen man's throat.

"Say it," General Gibbs demanded. "Say it now."

General Parcells gasped a final time, and with his final breath uttered, "Hail...Hail to...the...Redskins......"
