Jaron
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2025857 Already the oldest offensive lineman to play in a regular-season game, Ray Brown is set to continue that distinction after reaching a contract agreement to rejoin the Washington Redskins. The 42-year-old Brown on Wednesday will sign a one-year contract that includes a minimum salary of $765,000 for his 20th -- and likely final -- NFL season. He is projected as the team's top offensive line backup, and there are indications the Redskins are grooming him for a future position on their coaching staff. Citing the Elias Sports Bureau, The Associated Press reported Brown is the oldest NFL lineman since World War II and possibly the oldest since the 1920s. Birth dates are not listed in the record books for many players in the first half of the 20th century, according to AP. The Redskins signed Brown in desperation last summer after starting right offensive tackle Jon Jansen sustained a season-ending Achilles injury. Despite having spent most of his career at guard, a position where he earned Pro Bowl honors, Brown started 13 games at right tackle and performed surprisingly well. In all, Brown played in all 16 games, with 14 starts last season. A former Arkansas State player who entered the league in 1986 as an eighth-round pick of the then-St. Louis Cardinals, Brown has been rehabilitating from offseason surgeries to his right ankle and left knee. He is nearly recovered from those procedures and should be able participate in the Redskins' formal conditioning programs. Brown has appeared in 247 career games, starting 203, in stints with the Cardinals (1986-88), Redskins (1989-95 and 2004), 49ers (1996-2001) and Lions (2002-03). In the period of 1989-91, he played only seven games and started none. Since then, Brown has missed only one game and started 14 or more games in all but one season. CrazyZeb
If anything he should be complimenting Gibbs and the FO for picking up a guy any other team would consider finished, have him start at RT for most of the season, and perform considerably well. I guess that's too much to ask, though.

@DCGoldPants
well, it worked out for us. He is a good leader, teacher, and person. I'd be happy for him to be a coach for the OL next year. A player with that much experience...and the ability to leader others should be able to get into coaching.
33
Originally posted by D'Pablo umm, we did sign him out of desperation I wouldn't say that at all. People get hurt, you pick someone up to replace them. It's not as though every possible twenty something lineman was out, they chose to sign Brown over many other available linemen. Who's to say they wouldn't have signed him regardless of Jansen's injury. Injuries happen, in the NFL you pick up and keep moving. Fans and media make up desperation. The Evil Genius
And he won't count the entire 725k...since the NFL instituted that savings program for veterans players...

Dan T.
Nice article, and even the "desperation" bit isn't really a slam, so chill out fellas. We're getting to be like Pavlov attack dogs every time we see Lenny's name.

Jay Master Jay
Hopefully some of his skills & dedication will rub off on Dockery. Our offensive line can be the strength of the team again. A strong running game helps the entire team especially the defense by running the ball.
Joe Sick
Does anyone have the link to how much Ray's pension will be when he finally retires? I remember hearing it last year and was like "wow, that dude is set for life."
