Coles Deal Could Cost Skins

By trading wide receiver Laveranues Coles to the New York Jets, the Washington Redskins now have diminished funds to try re-signing cornerback Fred Smoot. And the financial quandary may cause Washington to reduce its standing offer -- including a $10.5 million signing bonus -- which would almost certainly lead to Smoot's departure. Smoot initially declined the offer last season when both sides desired an extension.

Swapping Coles for Santana Moss brought a salary cap hit of roughly $9 million, and leaves the Redskins with less than $2 million under the cap. Although that's sufficient to re-sign Smoot to the current offer, it would nonetheless prevent other signings.

The Redskins hadn't ruled out adding a pass-rushing specialist or blocking tight end through free agency. And Washington must still re-sign some of its unrestricted free agents, such as offensive lineman Ray Brown; restricted free agents who may get offers from other clubs; and draft picks. To ease the financial bind, Washington plans on saving almost $2 million by trading Rod Gardner for a draft pick. And the club can create more cap space by releasing certain players. But Washington already restructured several contracts and is running out of accounting maneuvers.

The Baltimore Ravens lost their free-agent cornerback Gary Baxter after reducing an initial bonus offer of $10 million to $7 million. After the change, Baxter signed with the Cleveland Browns. However, Smoot's options may become limited depending on the destinations of two of the top cornerbacks still available in free agency: Tennessee's Samari Rolle and New England's Ty Law. (Rolle is reportedly close to signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.)

Coles swindled us worse than Deion. Period.

Marty ended up cleaning house that 2001 offseason anyway and brought no high priced free agents, so it didn't really affect us.

Coles has singlehandedly fouled up our offseason plans.

Look at all the maneuvering we had to do just to accomodate his crying and whining.

Our coaches had a set plan going into this offseason that he went and destroyed with his selfisnness and narcissism.

If we lose Smoot as well as having already lost Pierce, it'll be because of him and you all know it.

I doubt it will cost us, but it can only be determined after the season is over. If Coles has a career best season and Moss has the same problem that Coles had last year, well then it would be obvious that the better deal was for the Jets. We'll see man.

Lates.

We didn't have to accomodate him. Joe could have told him "tough noogies" and kept this malcontent issue quiet. I'm not sorry to see him go, I just think this was a "cut off your nose to spite your face" type of move.

he'd ruin this team if he stayed - it was well worth it.

I don't dis-like the Jets or anything, but if we hear about the same "dissatisfaction" with the Jets when he doesn't get his way, and we will - we'll all feel better.

I cant see why smoot wont resign with us for the current contract offer. When he lines up at the line of scrimmage, when he looks to the right on the sideline he sees gibbs with 3 superbowl rings and greg williams who just lead them to being the #3 D in the league. When he looks to his left he sees huge #56 giving him help over the middle. When he looks behind him he sees shawn taylor giving him deep help. When he looks in front of him he sees that teams NUMBER 2 wide receiver. He has it made here. The team that offers him a 12mil signing bonus (if that happens) is paying him that cause their D is no good. He will have to really earn his money then and will have nowhere close to the help he would get from our D. I mean jeez, cmon mouth from the south back up your i want to be a skin for life talk and sign on the dotted line for a pretty good contract, a great D and coaching staff and fans that love you. Thats my :2cents:

That's probably Gibbs' whole rationale. I think it's nonsense easily outweighed by the realities of the salary cap. What happens when the next malcontent with a huge cap penalty pops up? You can only go so far with this philiosophy before we run into a brick wall. We should never have even set this precedent.

That's business. Sometime you take a step back to take 2 forward. If the coaches/FO did not think it was worth getting rid of him rather than keeping the money they would have. Coles was not what we expected, so move on.
