The Artist
I found this on the CBS sportsline fantasy site.

"According to published reports, Jackson could end up in Washington for the 2002 season. He is currently an unrestricted free agent, and would be reunited with former college coach Steve Spurrier if he were to make the move to Washington."

I realize this is something we already knew, but Jackson winding up with the Skins looks likely. It would be nice to keep Westbrook and pair him with both Jackson and Gardner, but signing Jackson probably signals the end for Mike.

I do think we should try our best to have two quality wideouts to go with Garnder, with my choice being Germaine Crowell or Az Hakim. TennesseeCarl
I think we're too smitten with big names. Maybe it's time to find out if there's some reason Derrious Thompson, Darnerian McCants or Justin Skaggs are occupying roster spots.

Not saying I don't like Jackson, by the way. He'd be great, but we've got to throw some bucks toward QB this year and the defensive line is eating up a lot of cap room as well.
Dirk Diggler
http://extremeskins.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005920&p=

Damn I hate being right all the time! First, Fred Smoot -- now this. I hope my next brilliant prediction of John Paralla comes to fruition.

If so, I might change my name to Nostradamus. bulldog
less likely Parella will be let go now that Marty is in town. he is going to keep as many good defensive players as he can.

don't be surprised if he keeps one or two free agents on defense at the cost of the other side of the ball.

Butler may do the drafting but you know he and Marty are bound to butt heads on the selection of the final 53 since both are so strong-willed.

This is gonna be fun to watch. Gamebreaker
I doubt Jackson will hurt our cap much, he isn't a big name and won't demand big money.

As far as Skaggs and Thompson are concerned, I'd rather have Willie. He is proven, while the other two are not. I would still bring Skaggs and Thompson to camp, but realistically, are they going to be productive once the season starts. NavyDave
Derrius Thompson is a restricted free agent Westy is UFA and we may lose Lockett since he is only gonna cost 500k this year.

Thrash was an unknown player too and it took 3 yrs to figure it out and the next thing you know he is in a championship game for the iggles.

Everyone here in the area should have heard on newschannel 8 and NBC 4 the raves that Skaggs receives from Champ and smoot on his work ethic and how physical as well as fast as he is in practice.

So at the least you send Skaggs and DMac to NFLEurope
bulldog
wait just a cotton-pickin' moment.........

how dare ANYONE bring up Willie Jackson when there has been such a hullabaloo about acquiring receivers that can hit the deep pass?

Everyone is complaining about Westbrook and Gardner not putting up numbers on the deep ball, eh?

Well, Gardner average 16.0 yards per catch while my reading of Jackson's stats indicate he averaged only 12.8 yards per reception this past season..........

Sounds like another possession receiver to me
Montilar
I agree NavtDave. I can't help but remember Champ's comments when asked if he was worried about Rod Smith. Hr replied, why should I be worried about Rod? I go against the toughest reciever I"ve ever seen every day. that was in reference to Skaggs.

Problem is, Spurrier, like Marty before him, knows little to nothing about the youngsters like skaggs, McCants, Watson and Sage. So they might be brought into camp but he will still probably bring in "his players". Just like marty, Norv, and all other coaches did.

One thing I just thought of? How many and which free agents do you think we will lose to Marty in San Diego?

Szott's a given IF he wants to relocate. Except I thought he wanted to stay close to home due to his kid havng an illness. If not then he will probaly retire again.

But which free agents will try to go to San diego and be reunited with marty?
bulldog
I don't think Westbrook and Kenard Lang will be among that group
NavyDave
Szott isn't going out to San Diego.

I believe the reason being is that his son is Challenged and goes to a very good facility in NY/NJ.

And doesnt San Diego have a decent defense already?

Wouldn't it be funny if Marty decided to TEACH Jr SEAU how to drop in coverage as well as provide run support?
indyskinsfan
NavyDave I take the question is regard to only Seau, not that Szott is a defensive player??

Anywho, Seau already drops back in coverages, sometimes he's fast enough, depending on the offfense he faces, sometimes he's out of position.

Szott would benefit tremendously by remaining with the Skins and so would Spurrier. The guys a leader, a die hard and got a motor. He allows for solidarity on the offensive line, with the two book ends. Raymer needs a backup and another young strong guard with that g/C wouldn't hurt.

[ January 28, 2002: Message edited by: indyskinsfan ]
NavyDave
Indy, it was a dig towards Marty for trying to teach a Vet like Darrell Green how to cover man to man after being in the league for like 19 years and being a probowler.

I believe/hope Szott does stay and Brandt may unseast Raymer as starting Center.

However Coleman's knees ie durability tells me that pursuing an OG like the guy in Colorado would be a good idea.

Imagine if we signed Hutch last year and could sign the Colorado guard now. Thinking Skins
Its funny that Marty spent all that time in camp teaching these guys how to cover, then during the season they were getting beat silly doing what marty told them. So they had to unlearn all that stuff. Same thing will probalby happen to Seau in San Diego.
Art
As Mark very ably pointed out, you don't have to have great speed receivers to play in Spurrier's offense. To be honest, do you know who I think would dominate in Spurrier's offense? A guy like Cris Carter today and Henry Ellard from before. You need a receiver that runs sharp routes and understands how to read a defense.

You don't need blazing speed. Jackson is an interesting guy to consider. He doesn't have the measurables Westbrook has, and I don't believe he's the receiver Westbrook is, but in an even trade, he might be a far better fit for this team and he has good size. He'd understand the offense, or at least the concepts Spurrier is implementing and I think Spurrier will need to bring in as many guys as he can who are familar with what he is trying to do.

I would give this type of move a thumbs up, but, I still would prefer Crowell .
