Favre is not facing criminal charges, but former Mississippi Department of Human Services director John Davis and other people have been charged in one of the state's largest embezzlement cases. Allegations of misspending came to light in early 2020 when Davis and five others were indicted.

White said in May 2020 that Favre, who lives in Mississippi, had repaid $500,000 of the $1.1 million in welfare money he received for multiple no-show speeches. Favre was paid by Mississippi Community Education Center, a nonprofit group whose former leader is among those awaiting trial.

Not sure how a guy that gets paid a million dollars for no-show speeches doesn't get indicted...well, actually I do know - they want their money back more than they want to expose their most famous citizen fir the scumbag he is.

Favre isn't the only athlete caught up in the scandal. Former pro wrestler Brett DiBiase, son of "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, was criminally charged. He was given large sums of money supposedly to teach drug abuse classes but the money went instead to pay for DiBiase's rehab at a luxury Malibu drug treatment facility.  His dad and his brother,  Ted DiBiase Sr. and Ted Jr., were not charged but were ordered to pay back millions of dollars given, supposedly for "motivational speaking" and to "help underprivileged teens."

Um.

What is the value of having Bret farve speak for a welfare agency?

I imagine raising awareness of the services offered, which if done right could be appropriate, and Favre is likely the right person for that job in Mississippi.  It sounds like this was a total grift however.

Edit:  Additional thought:  I love that Favre was absolutely willing to effectively steal government funds.  Open question as to whether he actually didn't know it came from welfare and that was too far for him, or if only changed his tune when he got caught.  Either way, if we needed any more evidence,* Brett Favre is a scumbag.

"If done right" would mean... oh, I don't know, actually SHOWING UP for the speeches.  He was a no-show and he still took the money.

TANF is assistance for needy families (welfare).  States receive this Federal money in the form of block grants.  Your Federal taxes here goes to the state and they determine how it gets spent.  Because, hey, big bad swampy DC doesn’t know what’s good for local communities.  Instead of supporting mothers with children, these states (typically southern) use these grants - not to directly assist needy mothers, but to promote marriage and Christianity.  This is what happens.

And, of course, Mississippi would think the guy who sends dick pics to female reporters while his wife battled cancer should be the spokesperson for marriage.

****ing disgusting.
