Alexander and Westbrook: Future Cowboys?

bulldog

from all indications (WP and elsewhere) Jerry Jones is indeed interested in both of the Redskins free agent receivers.

Jones appears obsessed with making the high stakes gambles with his personnel moves, and signing either or both Alexander and Westbrook to significant contracts based on their history of injuries would certainly qualify.

Then again, Jones knows there are few quality tight ends coming out this year and there is also a dearth of 6'3 and 220 receivers who run a 4.45 either.

I am really not that surprised about Alexander, whom Jones is no doubt fantasizing could become his second edition of Jay Novacek.

Westbrook is a little more of a stretch, although Ismail and Galloway really have not been that productive overall for Dallas and are both over 30.

Knowing our luck with ex-players, Westbrook will probably sign with Dallas and never miss another game in his career

what may indeed happen is that both Alexander and Westbrook will move on to other teams and be productive and it will actually be the best thing for them AND the Redskins.

For whatever reason the mojo just ain't good for these two in Washington. It is like someone has a kewpie doll and as soon as either is coming on, the pin goes in and down to injury the player falls.

That money isn't there for both of them, so I imagine Jones won't sign them both. If he does, it will be very interesting to see what part of his team he is willing to further severe.

Jones may not know this, but....aw I won't tell him

Anyway, his answers are right in his office and in the logic, but he keeps trying to reinvent the wheel so, you guys that say his risk are high are right. Even if it worked out, these players will simply not put 3 good ones together, which would be a huge plus for them, since Irvin was the last real consistant threat they had. It does take both of them at this point to equal Irvins peak game, so they better not falter or Jones will be broke and so will the game plans.

I agree with you on that Bulldog. It may be that Westbrook's potential will be realized elsehwere, but it just isn't happening here. And the fact that he has a good season for another team doesn't necessarily mean he would have had the same numbers here.

On the TE position, though, I thought there were several stud TEs - Shockey, the kid from Colorado and the kid from Washington. I'd take any of them in the second round (I just believe taking a TE in the first is pure luxury).

I've always felt Stephen Alexander runs terrific routes - he's almost always open. His problem has been the inconsistent hands and the nagging injury thing. I hate to see him go and yet I hate to see him stay.

I would be a little leery of either of them going to Dallas. It's just too risky for players with potential going to a rival in the division.

I mean, really, we thought that Brian Mitchell was done for his career, and wouldn't you know that he's got a new contract and has been a thorn in our side since he left washington.

The thing is, you just know that Westbrook would be a total fit for those evil blue and white unis, doing his crouch low and call the first down marker thing...

Yeah, what goes around comes around it is about time we start pushing some of our garbage on them.
Norv was the cow pie garbage man while he was here. Brought in old tired has beens (hey if Norv was still here he would bring his Troy toy in)

i don't want to see westy go, although we will survive (possibly thrive) without him. after following him for lo these 7 years, going to dallas would be a bad move for him: he does not play well on carpet and seems to be more injury prone on the stuff. i don't hink his body will be able to handle it.

Well as far as what the Dallas board is saying is, a few want to see Alexander, personally I don't, I think he tanked 2001. There are better vets, Jones from San Diego being the front runner. I also expect Dallas to take a TE to groom in the first three rounds.

As to Westbrook, he interests me. I am not sure why Marty didn't throw him a few more pass plays. I can see a vet mini contract with some incentives that pay off in 2003.

What JJ will end up doing no one knows. Just for the record, counting our resigned UFAs, Adams, Woody and the small fry, plus the Larry Allen renegotiation, Dallas has about $8-10 million for FA acquistion and the draft pool. One of our posters did a spread sheet with figures from the NFLPA.

We may catch a FA above and beyond JJ's stated goal of moderate price. Jones for interest could come in at around $2.8 - $3 mill. Kreutz at around just under $5 mill. He is calling in a few of the vet CBs and on that I have no idea what he would have to pay to get one.

Joe,
Nice to see you're still here at our board.
I'd like Westy to stay here in DC, actually, but no way do I see him being worth the $5mil a year he wants. Schot didn't get him the ball more because he had a retard for an offensive coordinator and a QB with the instincts of a carrot.

Very well put Riggo-Toni.

Well Joe, that's nice on those figures, but you got it right. Your owner is just too hands on and frankly doesn't like to hear the sound of another voice, especially when they try to tell him what to do.

Look for HIM to screw it up, not the players.
If Alexander goes a whole year on turf, I'd be surprised, throw in two at the Vet and it doesn't look good at all. I also expect that if either or both are signed, look for Westbrook to experience some jitters for quite a few games, again since it's the turf, the Eagles and the Skins defensive backfields with a bullseye on him.

I would like him to remain with the Skins, but then again, if both work out, you will have regained what you lost in Irvin, for sure.

I thought we should've held onto him simply because of his work ethic and the number of places he filled on the depth chart.

The only question I ever e-mailed to the "ask Norv" link on the Redskins page concerned him. (I think it was "We've got a guy who's gained more total yardage (returns, recieving, and rushing) than Emmit Smith, Barry Sanders, or Jerry Rice, for three years in a row. How come he's only playing third downs?"

(I had similar feelings about Thrash: He wasn't flashy, but when he went up for a contested ball, he often came down with it).

All that said: I think we should make a decent (not flashy, just decent) offer to Westbrook, and if Jerrah wants to outbid us, then I'll hope he gets in a fight with Emmitt.
