Who's Shanny's Late Round RB?

So I'd be willing to bet that Shanny is looking to the later rounds to add some youth to our RB corps. We already have CP and LJ who are both in the twilight of their careers, and Anthony Aldridge and PJ Hill. AA has some explosiveness, but Hill seems like fodder.

Shanny has quite a knack for finding RBs that fit his system late* in the draft. Examples not listed in any particular order-

Mike Anderson - 6th round

Olandis Gary - 4th round

Reuben Droughns - 3rd round

Terrell Davis - 6th round

Clearly, TD is the only one that is headed to Canton, but each of these guys were 1000 yrd rushers for Shanny.

Assuming that we take QB and OL for our first two picks (most agree are our two biggest needs), and we don’t have a 3rd (unless we trade down *fingers crossed*), then we should only consider those projected to go later than three.

My RB wish list:

Joe McKnight USC - I know, I know, he’s projected to go in the 3rd, but I

think he's the future. Perfect size 6' 180lbs. Fast. One-cut downhill runner (shanny likey). Returns kicks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fliv9DNBfIg

Lonyae Miller Fresno - Fast. Good size 5'11" 220. STRONG. breaks tackles. good hands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCeA-b_r6wM

Deji Karim Southern Ill - I usually don't like little backs (he's 5'8), but ever since spoles and MJD, I have started to come around. This guy's really fast. Elusive. Strong for size (19 bench press reps). Good hands. Returns kicks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej8pypXXA7k

Who would you guys like to see as our late-round RB pick?

LaGarrette Blount, Oregon - 6'0, 238 lbs. Low 4.5 40 at his pro-day.

I think we'd get him in the 4th, MAYBE 5th, but I highly doubt it.

He is like Ryan Torain (who Shanny drafted in '08) without the injuries. I think Blount has a floor of Brandon Jacobs and a ceiling of Steven Jackson. Remember, before the punch, he was a 1st round prospect.

I always forget about Blount. I wouldn't mind having him as long as he can stay "medium" :silly:

1. TD is not headed to Canton

2. Joe McKnight isn't perfect size, he's more strung out than Reggie Bush - he's got the body of a WR

3. Bench press is the most arbitrary measure of strength there is.

Yeah, he was part of the group of players signed after the season. Don't know much about him, tho.

Edit: He was actually signed off of Philly's PS. From reading the scouting reports, it sounds like he's a short yardage back type.

One of just three players (Ron Dayne and Anthony Davis) in school history to have rushed for 1,000 yards in each of their first two seasons ... ranks ninth on school’s career rushing yardage list with 2,805 yards ... fifth on UW career rushing TDs list with 29 ... his 31 total touchdowns (29 rushing, two receiving) rank fifth in school history ... ranks ninth on school’s list for career rushing attempts with 544 ... averaging 5.12 yards per carry during 24-game career (tied for sixth all-time at UW) ... has rushed for at least 100 yards in a game 14 times (eighth-most in school history)

Found these stats on diff. site.

Year Team Attempts Yards Average TDs

2006 Wisconsin 311 1,569 5.0 15

2007 Wisconsin 233 1,212 5.2 14

2008 Wisconsin 226 1,161 5.1 13

College Totals 770 3,942 5.1 42

What I meant by this is if your going to be 5'8 in the NFL, you better be stocky (as a rb). See MJD.

Also, TD going to the hall is easily debatable. If you want to argue against, that's fine. List some stats or data or something.

The reason I think Hardesty will be available in the 4th, is that he hasn't had consistent production throughout his college career. He was considered a 4th or 5th round choice prior to the combine. Although he had a great work out I don't know that it would propel him into the 3rd round.

He's a longshot because his career was cut way short. He doesn't have the career statistics you'd expect to see from a Hall of Fame inductee at the RB position.

Also had some knee issues that might push him back. One can hope!

Great thread!!

Look for LaMarcus Coker out of Hampton to get some attention. He's already in the D.C area. But One person we definitely need on our team is LeRoy Vann from Florida A&M. He's a special teams coach's dream. We've lacked someone who could take it the distance on special teams and be explosive on certain plays and this kid could be the answer!

IIRC Shanahan has been know to keep 4 RBs on the roster. If Alridge can learn how to field kicks he can stake a spot on this team. I dont expect to get Tate after he blew up at the combine. Hardesty might be a good pick but Im not really sold on him but I would be ok with taking him in the 4th but I would rather spend that pick on a 3-4 OLB Pass Rush specialist.
