Redskin Pre-Game

Hello and welcome to ES coverage of the Washington Redskins V the Philadelphia Eagles. Bredskin live on site with Murf for a huge game with Philly. It is perfect weather for this NFC East battle, temperatures at kick-off should be in the low 50s. Clear skies are in the forecast.

It seems like the Redskins haven’t played in about a month. Time has stood still. Never can I remember a team getting so much national attention for being 2-4. It certainly has not been boring in Ashburn, VA.

We will see Offensive Consultant Sherman Lewis call his first play for the Redskins, as he takes over for Head Coach Jim Zorn, in a much publicized ultimatum / demotion by Vinny Cerrato. It should be very interesting to see how he does re-acclimating himself to the NFL, as I have called as many plays in the last five years as he has.

We are also going to be able to find out how Jason Campbell handles himself, eight days after his halftime benching against Kansas City. I think it is safe to say that quarterback is not the only challenge on this roster. This could be a pivotal game in Campbell’s career and his future as a Redskin.

Offensively, this game will begin and end with the patchwork offensive line. With Chris Samuel’s career coming to an end because of stenosis, added pressure will be on Stephon Heyer and Big Mike Williams. Their performances against the lowly Chiefs last Sunday, were less than stellar. The Eagles will bring a very fast defense to FedEx Field tonight, possibly the best the Redskins have faced this season. The Redskin offensive line must play their best tonight. The key is running the football. The Redskins must grind the clock down and keep the ball out of Donovan McNabb’s hands.

Defensively, the Redskin defense will face the best offense since week one against the New York Giants. The Eagles also run the West Coast offense and tend to throw the football about 60-70 per cent of the time. Their quick passing offense tends to negate a pass rush. It will be interesting to see if the much improved Redskin pass rush will get to McNabb. The key to defending Philadelphia will be corner play. Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall must take away the quick passes to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. With that being said, Reed Doughty and Laron Landry better protect against the home run, because the Eagle wide outs have great speed.

Stay tuned…I’ll update with the inactive list as soon as they are released.

First Quarter

8:45 67 yard carry from DeSean Jackson...Not what we needed....0-7

8:57 C. Griffin out with spained elbow, return questionable

8:58 Brian Westbrook is down, brother Byron is with him. He appears okay, but woozy..

9:04 Brian Westbrook is out with a concussion

9:09 29 yard punt return by D. Jackson...speed is a dangerous weapon

9:16 HB Blades and Byron Westbrook out with knee injuries...returns questionable

9:17 W. Witherspoon 9 yd int return off of a Quinton Miikell tip....0-14

Although the Redskins did not play poorly, they find themselves down 14. Defensively, the Redskins have done relatively well against the classic West Coast scheme of the Eagles. The one breakdown was the run by Jackson. Offensively, the Redskins started with a couple of passes to Cooley, but have done little else. The Redskins have used some maximum protection formations on 3rd down to protect Campbell.

Second Quarter

9:24 Campbell scrambles and fumbles...Witherspoon with the recovery....we have seen this before...

9:27 Chris Cooley is questionable to return with an ankle..just got carted off...

9:28 Eagles capitalize on the QB turnover. field goal from 47 good. 0-17

9:32 Beautiful return by Cartright with a penalty tacked on.

9:34 Nice 13 yd pass to Moss...need a few more of those..

9:38 11 yard carry by Rock...nice play from the shotgun, 2 back set

9:39 TD to Devon Thomas....a nice drive....they could have rolled over.... 7-17...

9:44 3 and out....the stadium is actually load right now...good effort by the Skins...good series by Andre Carter

9:45 Jones recovers Randall-El fumble at the 25..when it hits him in the face...way to use your head...

9:48 44 yard FG by Akers. The Eagles have been messing aroundd with the Wildcat with Vick and McCoy. It is not working. Why would a team that is this good use gimmicks? 7-20

9:49 Macho Harris is out with an ankle.

9:50 Cooley not expected to return

9:53 Campbell doesn't step up in the pocket and is sacked....ugly series..3 and out.

9:55 Reed Doughty with a sack...nice set by the defense...turnovers have put them in bad situations. Besides the long run by Jackson, they have played well.

news from murf...

www.twitter.com/homermcfanboy

UPDATE: Heard from a very reliable source that Chris Cooley's injury is worse than we thought. Word is a broken foot. Not good at all.

10:00 57 yards to D. Jackson 7-27

10:08 D. Jackson out with an ankle.

10:10 Suisham from 47 ....10-27

Huge turnovers and big plays are killing Washington. Injuries are pouring salt in the open wound....

HalfTime

Third Quarter

10:28 2nd hold on Heyer

10:29 Screen to Sellers, seriously???

10:35 Andre Carter with his 7th sack this season

10:40 Sellers blocks wrong guy...Campbell sacked.

10:48 Do they have more than one DeSean Jackson?? They must. One man can't do this much damage...gain of 12..

10:56 Campbell sacked...he held the ball way too long in the pocket.

A very uneventful third quarter. The stadium is quiet. The Redskins weren't awful in the quarter, but penalties and sacks have killed them. Andre Carter played well, picking up a sack. So far, we have seen some new formations and a couple of new plays, but it is not enough. The Redskins are not capable of executing plays for any extended periods of time. Turnovers, penalties, and big plays are way too much for a team with this talent level to overcome.

Fourth Quarter

11:03 D. Hall back to return the punt...kicked out of bounds at the 32 after a 25 yard punt

11:08 Sleepy can't block Trent Cole, Campbell sacked. He has caught a few tonight, but he is a definite liability when asked to block.

11:19 Campbell to Randle El for 17

11:20 Campbell to D. Thomas for 22...the Eagles are playing soft..

11:20 Levi Jones in at LT...Heyer back in

11:24 Fade to Moss???? Should have drafted some big receivers last year..

11:25 Nice snap on 4th for another fumble....Eagles ball on the 9. First down..

11:29 Redskins are using their timeouts with 4 1/2 minutes to go...why not?

11:34 Ex-Redskin Chris Clemons sacks Campbell

11:37 2 Minute warning. Redskins are at the Eagle 3.

11:42 1 Yd Pass to Sleepy 17-27

11:44 Onside kick....nope...Eagles ball...ball game..

stay tuned ...

REFFKIN'S FINAL THOUGHTS

For the fifth time in seven tries, the Washington Redskins were defeated.

This is a football team that has learned how to lose. The Redskins are not talented enough to overcome any adversity that may happen throughout the course of a game. There are too many mistakes. There are too many sacks. There are too many fumbles. There are too many interceptions. They are a team that does not know how to win.

Offensively, the Redskins showed some new wrinkles. I liked the shotgun formation, two-back set. It was particularly effective early in the first half scoring drive in the red zone. The Redskins used that formation and gave an inside hand-off to Rock Cartwright that surprised almost everyone. The following play, out of the same formation, gave Devin Thomas his first career touchdown reception. The Redskins also got something going early in the game with a couple of nice passes to Chris Cooley, which appeared to be getting Campbell into a nice rhythm. However, that was short lived. An early pick-six off of a tipped pass really seemed to get into Campbell’s head. He struggled at times deciding whether to run or pass, and usually got caught somewhere in between. Jason Campbell is too deliberate in the pocket. That will not change. The Redskins also only had 62 yards rushing. Earlier tonight I talked about the necessity of running the football and grinding the clock. The early deficit and mounting turnovers forced them to pass, which allowed the Eagle Pass rush to tee off on Washington. The Washington Offense was overmatched by the speed of the Eagle defense and their complex blitz packages. The offensive line was beaten with speed and overpowered tonight, and most likely will be throughout the season.

I need to give a shout out to Fred “Sleepy” Davis. Freddy caught a career high eight balls and a touchdown. We will need that production from him following the Cooley injury.

Defensively, the Redskins played relatively well. The defense gave up a long run by DeSean Jackson, followed by a long pass. On both occasions, the defense was burnt badly. Outside of those two plays they did well. The Redskins were able to move Donovan McNabb around in the pocket and Andre Carter added his seventh sack. Keep in mind; while we are evaluating the defense, this is one of the better offenses we will see. If we remove the Jackson run, the Eagles ran 25 times for 55 yards. We were not dominating, but played well enough to keep this team in the game, but the offense and special teams kept giving the ball away.

This is a team that played tonight with effort and played hard until the end. They are not a team of quitters. They were beaten by a better coached, better run, better owned, and more talented roster, in the Philadelphia Eagles. The bye week comes at a perfect time. It is time to re-group. Now the schedule is really going to get hard.

Keep rooting for the team. The players are doing the best with what they have. Go Skins!!

Probably the most interesting game of the year. Does anyone know of Sherm's playcalling tendencies? Is he risky?

The word around the league from his past experience, is that he is very vanilla. He is not widely respected as a playcaller.

But, today is a new day and a new decade..

As it gets closer to game time, can you please give us a feel for how many Eagles jerseys you see in the stands?

And if any anti-FO signs managed to get smuggled in? :)

I ahave a pregame feeling like no other I can remember ... odd mixture of dismay and excitement. Weird.

This could be a pivotal game in Campbell’s career and his future as a Redskin.

I've heard this said too much, and to me it's not true. It's not going to be pivotal because he's not going to prove he's a good QB tonight. He's proven over and over again he is not a starting QB. He may play well, but it's not going to save him from his eventual fate. He will be on another team, holding a clipboard.
