Cam Wake

6'3" 260 lbs

BC Lions

College - Penn State

He has spent two seasons in the CFL with the BC Lions, in 2007 he had 16 sacks and won Outstanding Defensive Player. This year he had a crazy 23 sacks, 3 FF, 1 defensive TD and a blocked kick. He has a crazy vertical leap. He will easily win defensive player of the year again and should be Most Outstanding Player in the league, but the CFL never votes defensive players for that award.

At PSU, he played linebacker but he is now a rush end in the CFL at 260. I think he could fit here as a primary backup at LB and DE where he could alternate between.

Nice find and its how we got Chris Wilson.

I know nothing about him or ever seen him play, but he seems like he would be better suited in a 3-4 system than a 4-3 system. Or he could be a situational pass rusher.

But the question is he just quicker than his opponents and a better athlete, or does he actually have moves as well?

I'm going to confess that I haven't seen him play either. I was just taking a look at the CFL for FA talent and this guy popped up. I think he was overlooked in his first go around in the NFL because he was a UDFA and he was lighter at the time. Reports are there are 22-23 teams interested in him and he is a DC area guy.

Let's also start building up the personnel for a 3-4 so we can make a switch after Blache retires.

Nice find. ;)

His wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_Wake

He's a local guy, growing up in DC area and named WP Defensive Player of the Year in HS.

Our own Chris Wilson also played in the CFL for 2 years. For the same team no less.

Here's some stats for comparison:

Wilson:

2005: 41 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 fumble, 1 TD

2006: 29 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 INT

Wake:

2007: 72 tackles, 16 sacks

2008: 65 tackles, 23 sacks, 3 fumbles, 1 TD

And an article from a CFL GM who found Wake: http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/2008/10/02/ticats_wake/

"I would say he’s the (Most Outstanding Player) and (Most Outstanding) Defensive Player," O’Billovich opined. "I don’t see any quarterback or running back that is more dominant than he is at his position. He’s had an outstanding year and he keeps getting better."

Wake was voted the CFL’s Rookie of the Year and Outstanding Defensive Player last year, becoming the first to do it.

Wake played at Penn State, primarily as an outside linebacker, and had tryouts with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins without catching on with either one. Through his agent, Wake was able to get a look from the Lions last year at an open workout at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. But because of a mixup with his agent, Wake went to Howard University in Washington, D.C. Halfway through the workout, he called O’Billovich to ask for directions, whereupon he discovered he had gone to the wrong university.

"After his first day of one-on-one (drills), I said to Wally, ‘We might have a better guy than Chris Wilson,’" O’Billovich said.

Wilson played for the Lions as a defensive end in 2005 and 2006 and did well enough to receive a contract from the Redskins.

"Chris Wilson stands on his own merit," O’Billovich said. "He did well for us and is playing well for the Redskins. Cameron Wake is playing well for us and he’ll do well for somebody else (in the NFL). He’s one of the better (players) to come along in a long time since I’ve been in the league (beginning as an assistant coach in 1976).

"Athletically, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone better than him at his position. He’s a rare talent. He’s just been a real special guy. Everything that is being said about him is much deserved. The other thing is he’s a good kid. It’s good to see good things happen to good people."

O’Billovich said whatever money Wilson received as a signing bonus, Wake will receive a lot more.

"The Redskins did due diligence and got a good player from our league," O’Billovich said. "People didn’t know as much about him, but the whole NFL knows about (Wake). He’s going to have a lot of leverage after this season."

More quotes at the link:

Giulio Caravatta, a former quarterback with the B.C. Lions and now the radio analyst for the team’s games, asked Lions’ defensive line coach Mike Roach whether Wake is one of the best he’s ever had.

"He said (Wake) was right (up) there," Caravatta said. "It’s tough for him and I think it’s tough for a lot of coaches to compare him because it’s different eras and the defensive ends were physically a different kind of makeup, but I will say this: as long as I’ve been with the Lions and it’s coming up on 18 years as a player and a broadcaster, I haven’t been riveted to a defensive player like I am with him.

"I find myself not watching the ball some plays and watching him because I want to know what he’s going to do next. Physically he’s such a dominating force on the field that you just think to yourself, ‘this guy is just a freak’ and when you see him do the things that he does you just have to look at him and say, ‘wow.’"

Hmm...

Those tryouts were probably right after coming out of college. It looks like he's polished his game a bit in Canada. Worth a shot with the production he's had.

Interesting, but I don't see us going after someone like Wake when we have Wilson. We also have Jackson and Buzbee might be coming back. I'd like to know if Wake or Wilson could play SAM and replace Marcus? I would really like to find a way to get Wilson more involved. The speed is likely there, just coach them up coverage wise perhaps.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/Features/NFList/2008/nflist112408.htm

With the Canadian Football League season concluding Sunday with the 96th Grey Cup game, we polled NFL and CFL evaluators for their thoughts on the CFL players most likely to get a shot with an NFL club in 2009. (All evaluators participated on condition of anonymity.) Per an agreement between the two leagues, CFL players entering the option year of their contracts can sign with NFL teams from Dec. 29, 2008 through Feb. 15, 2009. CFL free agents can sign with NFL teams after Feb. 15, 2009.

The way we hear it, the list of NFL prospects might start, and end, with B.C. Lions DE Cameron Wake, who could draw interest from clubs looking to bolster their pass rush. The 6-3, 241-pound Wake, who played collegiately at Penn State, had 23 sacks this season, 12 more than any other player, and was voted the league's top defensive player for a second consecutive year. Wake, who’s entering his option year, also notched 65 tackles and forced five fumbles, a league high.

Wake, who will be 27 in January, is likely to be a 3-4 outside linebacker or pass-rush specialist in the NFL, according to the personnel man interviewed by PFW.

One CFL executive said Wake, who racked up 16 sacks in 2007, was “a better football player” than the Bengals’ Rashad Jeanty, who played defensive end for the Edmonton Eskimos from 2003-05 but plays strong-side linebacker in Cincinnati’s 4-3 defense

Coaching staff is not pleased with Wilson's poor showing and work ethic though.

FYI at the combine, he had the 2nd highest vertical leap (45.5") in the past decade.

To follow up with what method man's saying:

The combine data from 2000-08 is here: http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/combineleaders.php?genpos=OLB&sortorder=vj&order=DESC

FYI, Cameron Wake's full name is Derek Cameron Wake. So referenced as Derek Wake.

Only a S out of UNC (Sensabaugh) in 2005 had a 46" vertical that topped it.

The best WR was Chambers with a 45" vertical. Moss had a 42" (6th best recorded for a WR).

Interestingly, McIntosh's also on the list with T-5th highest vertical. A comparison of McIntosh's #s with Wake's.

Wake:

40-yd dash: 4.65

Bench reps: 20

Vertical: 45.5"

Broad jump: 10' 10"

Shuttle: 4.13

Cone: 7.12

McIntosh:

40-yd dash: 4.63

Bench reps: 18

Vertical: 41.5"

Broad jump: 9' 11"

Shuttle: 4.20

Cone: 7.32

Just some interesting finds. Seems he was a starter as a Junior but then fell into a rotation as a Senior at Penn State. Don't know specifics why he wasn't drafted.

Ranked #11 OLB by Scout.com for 2005 draft.

i live in canada and watched this guy play alot and all i can say he was straight beast, took on double teams and still beat them, yes it is the cfl so the tackles are super ****ty but he bull rushed them and had a speed rush, so in the cfl he had the full package which is solidfied with the sack numbers.

only thing against him is that he had another good de across from him and an pretty good dt in the middle so he didnt face too much double teams and was singled out a lot, but i would love if we gave him a chance cause he was an absolute freak to watch.
