Antiwar protesters trash 9/11 memorial

Antiwar protesters trash 9/11 memorial

American flags burned and slashed

By Debbie Pfeiffer Trunnell, Staff Writer

LA HABRA -- Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and have maintained ever since.

However, although officers witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday.

"For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent,' he said.

Rees said in order for police to take any action, the owner of the fence would have to file a complaint.

Jeff Collison, owner of The RV Center in La Habra, who has allowed residents to add patriotic symbols to the fence on his property, said he just might do that.

"Their free speech stops at destruction of private property. If they are allowed to come on my property and burn flags, does that mean I can go to City Hall or the police station and light their flags on fire because that is freedom of speech? To me, this is vandalism,' Collison said.

Some residents Monday hung signs criticizing those who destroyed the display.

Tracey Chandler, a Whittier mother of four who has maintained the spontaneous memorial since it was created by other area residents soon after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said she was shocked by the destruction.

"They trashed 87 flags, ripped 11 memorial tiles made by myself and my children out of the ground and glued the Bob Dylan song to a sign that said, 'America, land of the brave, home of the free,' ' she said.

The Bob Dylan song she referred to is "With God on Our Side,' an antiwar anthem of the 1960s.

"It's unbelievable, because there were absolutely no political messages on this fence. It was all about supporting our troops, which could mean bringing them home, and about remembering 9-11.'

Les Howard, a sociology professor at Whittier College, said the incident might be an indication of some confusion among people trying to stop a possible war against Iraq but uncertain how to express their sentiments. However, he said he does not condone the destruction of symbols important to those who erect them.

"Some think (the best way to support the troops) is to not question their role. Some think the best way is to pursue all means possible to avoid putting them in danger,' he said. "That still does not excuse any desecration of people's symbolic participation.'

Chandler said she plans to rebuild the Sept. 11 memorial.

"We are going to rebuild this memorial, and it will be brighter, bigger and better than ever,' Chandler said.

Stupid *******s....

I'm trying to figure out how you know these three people were "liberals"?

Is it impossible for a conservative to act in a violent rage and destroy property?

What the fu*k is wrong with you?

Before I say this I want everyone to know that I do not condone what was done. I spent 14 years in the military. I was in the first Gulf war with the 24th Inf Div.

We have fought many people, in many places, in the name of freedom. We live in a country that allows us to say what we wish, all the battles were fought so that this could stay in place. These people are only doing what we have fought for in the past, while I don't have the same beliefs as them, it is their right. Don't get me wrong, very few things bother me more than to see somebody burning an American flag especially an American or so-called American doing so. While they are expressing themselves I'm sure they don't stop to think that they are stepping all over the memories of Soilders, Marines Airman and Sailiors that died so that they could live in a world were freedom is not just a thought. I am all for them protesting if they believe they should but all I do ask is that theyhave some respect for the people that died so that they can protest without fear of some sort of retaliation.

Now with that being said, I'm going to exercise my freedom of speech.

Kill'em all, Let God sort them out.

Such a great leader we have in Bush! He has divided America and actually managed to have most of the world against us even straight up vs someone as evil as Saddam Husein! Wow Dubya should be proud! What a job!

Bush or no Bush alot of innocent people died in the 911 tragedy.

I personally think that the peopel that tore down the shrine should all be forced to take plane tickets to go live in Iraq and have a temp suspension of their rights to live in america.

Even though what they did is freedom of speech which should be respected, why are they here.

Its pretty cool to have freedom of speech when you can go home at night and live under the blanket of freedom that comes from living in the US. Wonder if these hyprcites think about this at night before they goto sleep. This is what bothers me, if you have a problem with the county and think living in the middle east is better then get the hell out.

I promise you the first time they had to take a dump in a hole and wipe with their hand they woudl rethink the stance on america.

Well considering the French just love Saddam and all the other dirty Muslim regimes and are hell bent at opposing us any leader would have ended up in this situation Jack.

But hey at least Bush went through the UN and Congress unlike your boy Clinton who just bombed away with no UN resolutions. But hey its Bush who is unilateral.

Some of us who are against action in Iraq and don't care for Bush, were also against Clinton's actions...

As usual.....pull your head out of your rectal orifice JackC....this country was divided long before Bush arrived....your boy Clinton succeeded in drawing the lines...that much has been made clear from 10 years of polling.......even you must concede that the divisions grew rancorous and entrenched prior to and during the whole impeachment process.....that hasn't abated....it has grown worse....so please....quit reconstructing history.....to borrow a phrase you like: you should be ashamed......

Mr Monk,

If that is how you feel than you don't understand the meaning of America. We all have the right to be wrong and stupid without fear of being "sent to Iraq". Now if they broke laws and it seems they did than they should be charged.

Kilmer,

I know what I said was a overstatement but it gets real old when some take every single thing that happens in the world and tries to pin that on all liberals.

Try reading this for a guide. The modern incarnation of liberalism detests patriotism and apologizes for America.

We all do my young friend. That's part of what makes America great. You can have your own version(and you do) and I don't have the right to "pack you off to Iraq" for that view!

That's way to far there. I think p-heddy's comment was more than warrented. How do you know they aren't just anarchists? They probobly were and had nothing better to do. THey could have been vagrents in the same respect. In fact, i would place a wager that given the opportunity to inquire their political affiliation in a civil manner, one would find they could be labeled socialist, anarchist or even communist.

The fact is that they are as of now flat out as*holes..............
