SIGNED: MLB London Fletcher-Baker (Incl. Press Conf.)

TK

Recommended Posts

So youre not happy about getting a player who is arguably the best player now on the defense, even if it's for a few years? Another on field general and someone in the middle of the field who is a sure tackler?

You might want to rethink this one again.

When your 18 you tend to think over 30 is over the hill

Meh, don't really care for this signing too much. In a couple of years he'll probably get cut. Dude is already 31 and is going to decline soon.

But welcome to the team London. :)

I could understand your concern if the guy was injury prone and showed signs of reduced production on the field. But neither are the case with Fletcher. He should give us good service for at least two years, in which time we should have already drafted a MLB. (Crossed fingers because the smilely face room is doing something funky)

I've been spurned many times by Free Agency before. No more high hopes.

I am excited about the Smoot signing(or possibility I guess)because he's still fairly young and was really a core-Skin and should have never left.

Mike Barrow was also an iron man when we signed him....

don't know too much about London Fletcher (especially in pass coverage)...but the signing strikes me as a good, placeholder move for the Skins. Hopefully, he can stablize the LB corps and elevate its overall level of play.

the Skins have to have a card up their sleeves on the DL. I just don't see the moves so far (including a #6 DL pick) as enough to move the team to a point where it can take advantage of its offense. which DL FA are they quietly looking at???.... :)

From the front page of this post:

"Fletcher is a short, thickly-built player with great power and strength. He has great instincts and vision of the field both versus the run and pass. Fletcher makes the checks and adjustments for the Buffalo defense and plays with excellent reactions as the play unfolds. He is rarely out of position from being slow to read and understands leverage versus larger opponents. He takes on blockers with great pad level or can slip through to make a play. He does a great job pressing back on interior blockers to squeeze cut back plays effectively. Fletcher uses his hands well to disengage blockers or re-routing receivers in coverage. London is a good athlete that rarely gets knocked off his feet. He does have some problems at times when he gets locked up versus long-armed powerful lineman but he wins more often than he loses. Fletcher reads patterns well in coverage and gets his hands on balls in the passing game. He had an outstanding season with 146 tackles and he is the mainstay on the Bills defensive front. He still has some good years left and I look for Buffalo to keep him in a Bills uniform to finish his career."

and

"Fletcher is good, plain and simple. He’ll be 32 heading into next season, but he’s still producing as one of the top linebackers, with 146 total tackles, two sacks, and four interceptions credited to him during the 2006 season. Fletcher hasn’t missed a game in his career, and he’s also tallied 119 total tackles or more in every season since 2000. If the Bills don’t get him to sign an extension, expect Fletcher to garner attention from several teams looking for a veteran presence that can make things happen on the field. Wherever Fletcher ends up, he’ll be brought in to act as a defensive leader and to make big plays. Ultimately, he could be the cream of the crop in terms of available linebackers."

Basicall, he's damn good, and had 4 picks last year. I honestly dont really want to hear about a D-line signing this year though. Not that we dont need it, it's just there is nothing out there I pay for. Kerney is probably the best, I dont think he'll be any good here.

I like this signing, like Bang posted about 2 pages earlier, anyone who AVERAGES 143 tackles a year for the past 5 years is money in the bank and a vast improvement over highway 57. And people need to get over his age, 32 is NOT old, if he was 35-36 then you could start ****in, but he's still got a few very productive years left in him, HTTR!!!!!!

Wow... We signed a 32 year old linebacker to replace our 30 year old linebacker. What a great move. The Skins are set at MLB for a good season and a half now!

Yippee!

For the last 2 years for Zach Thomas when he turned 33 and 34 he logged 158 and 165 tackles.

Fletcher is in the same mould as Thomas, only he is even more durable. Why does everyone think a player will start shutting down when they turn 33 or so? The only players that drop off around 33 are players whose only talent was speed.

Really? Can ya name a few stud 34 year olds for me? Or even one whose best years are ahead of him?

Let's not bicker about age.

Doug Williams was 32 in 1987, a very good year for Washington.

Darrell Green, Bruce Mathews, and many others have played very well past the magic 30 year old mark. Let's hope for the same level of continued success here.

Donnie Edwards. Same position even. You can go away now.

Oh yeah! Donnie Edwards! That guy is a STUD! The Chiefs would never let him get away even at that age!!! No way, he has to much good football ahead of him...

Oh wait... http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/KC/5072882

And the Chargers are convinced hes worth even more now!

Oh wait...

Just wondering if anybody thinks that this means Marshall will move over to OLB, opposite Washington?

Marshall is probably locked in competition with Rocky M. for the WLB start. He has the edge now due to experience, but there's a new LB coach in town. Who knows which way he will go until August arrives?

One thing for sure, Marshall has great value as far as depth goes for both positions.

Unless we shore up the DT spot he won't make a difference. Right now no difference in what we had. Can he run? Better get ready to cover deep middle or will they rotate him with Marshall on obvious passing downs, though sometimes an obvious passing down is not so obvious. I would have gave him 15 over 3. Hell he could still be gone in 2 years with a 5 mill in 25 yrs.

So what's the difference? There maybe a big difference, but I'm not real privy to contracts. It looks like we tied some more money up and still haven't answered the DT/ DL issues. I think I'll save this post, cause right now I wouldn't have signed him for five hell if you're a team player then 3 years wouldn't have made a difference. And if you're for the betterment of the team then you can even do 2.

He's more of a stout MLB and plays with a lower center of gravity than Marshall, but not as quick. But we'll see how he does in cover two. That's the big thing to see, get him up in that wash, and he will be because those guards and centers will be riding him, and there’s no difference. We still don't have that big body to keep them off of him. Give me 12-15 solos a game and good signing other than that no difference will save....

Your article doesn't make any points, and neither do you. Edwards racked up 142 tackles for the #1 scoring defense in the entire NFL. You make horrible, horrible arguments. Do some research before throwing out ridiculous statements.

Lead Blocker great post and salient point on depth Marshall will bring great value. I say start Marshall and rotate him with Fletcher. So who's out Kahry Campbell or Posey? Campbell is a teamer and more of a short yardage asset, and can flat out play and tackle. Haven't seen much of Posey but scuttle butt has it that he can also play and been around a while.

Best years in front of him? Don't they just have to be very good years to prove you wrong? The following players are very good and 34 or older.

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4539

Brett Favre (doesn't need a comment)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1028

Jeff Hartings (one of the best centers)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3599

Ted Wasington (one of the best to play his position)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4472

Sam Adams (same as above)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3006

Teddy Bruschi (great player)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3189

Rodney Harrison (was great, always had injury problems)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3598

Michael Strahan (needs no explanation)

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4337

But thats just to name a few...

People don't suddenly hit a bump at age 33 and start degenerating or playing badly.

Lol Did you read the article you quoted?

"It's a shame things didn't work out a little better ... Donnie Edwards was a truly outstanding player for the Chargers, and will be an outstanding player for whatever team he ends up on next. "
