I've had 2 knee surgeries. Tore 2 ligiments playing baseball in college. That knee has always given me some sort of trouble. Lots of grinding.

Make sure you do the rehab 100%, whether you need surgery or not. My kneee feels better now than it has in a long time since I have dropped a lot of weight and started lifting weights with my legs. Big improvement.

hope it's not an ACL tear. Let us know what the doc says.

ACL tears aren't as bad as you may think...it's the torn cartiledge that sucks. And if it's a slight tear where they can stitch it up, still no worries. It's when they trim the cartiledge...which is what happened to me. That will follow you around. I still am active in sports however, just gotta pay more attention to it at the gym, and strengthen the muscles around it

I had partial tears in my ACL, MCL, PCL and medial meniscus, now I walk with a permanent pimp limp. I have to ice my knee after wlking for more than 10 minutes at one time and I live on Ibuprofren (800 mg pills) the knee was injured 7 years ago. i hope you don't have my fate

I had a ACL in the late 80's and had to be in the hosp 3 days after the Doc fixed me. Now, ACL can be done and u go home the same day. I cant get over how fast they can send you home after a ACL. I tore my MCL two years ago and I was walking on my leg 8 hrs later.

I had two tears in my meniscus (both sides) scoped and fixed on March 24. I followed rehab religously and it's almost like new now. I have little trouble when I bend down all the way on it. But I have hiked already and didn't have a problem. Bonus was I lost 12 lbs too. The surgery and month after where bit hellish, but it's all good now. Take care of it as soon as you can. If you put it off, it will only make fixing it worse.

I wouldn't worry too much until the doctors have a chance to see what is actually going on.

Back in 1973, I tore my ACL, meniscus, and several ligaments while playing football (crackback blocks had just become illegal).

After three knee surgeries, no cartilage remaining, and a severe case of arthritis; the only activity I can compete in is golf. Even then, I need to ice my knee for a couple of hours after playing.

Running, long walks, or anything that involves shocking the knee is completely out of the question these days.

Last year I had a procedure done where they injected some type of silicone based material directly into my knee. It eliminated the constant daily pain and took me off my medication; but I still can't do anything that is real physical. Next step is a knee replacement; which I have put of doing the last 15 years.

On a brighter side, back when I had the knee operations (early '70's to late '70's) it was during the old days of "hack and wack". With today's medical procedures, they can effectively put you back together without all the pitfalls of arthritis.

Good luck. Keep us posted on how you fair with the Doc's.

I tore my knee up in college when I was drunk and it would give out if I cut hard on it, like in playing basketball. I'm not active enough for it to matter now. I can run a marathon because there's no hard cutting or twisting involved. I wouldn't even try playing a game of tennis, it would go out for sure.

I know how you feel ,I had the same in both legs and the doctors swore there was no way I could go w/o surgery...25 yrs later and a lot of ball playing later I'm still limping around ;)

One thing that works wonders for me is GSX formula by Bluebonnet, while it doesn't remove the pain I can function better with no swelling and the pain is a dull throb....You might try it,I swear by it, in fact they will get to not hurting and I will forget or put off taking it...Big mistake

Shallow , It all depends on the damage ,but they can work wonders nowadays...My son has had 2 ACL surgerys.

Well just got back from the Dr. preliminary results look good, he wants me to ice and stay off it until monday, but I can put my weight on it and walk, and I have about 80% range of motion and some swelling still. He thinks its just a sprained ligament but the swelling has to go down first.

Good to hear Shallow.

I do suggest though that you go get a 2nd opinion. I tore my ACL in '96 and the first doctor I went to told me the same as your doctor. I then visited a specialist and he could tell immediately that it was torn. He sent me for an MRI and confirmed it. :2cents:

Completely agree with the second opinion. In my case, the first doc told me I tore my ACL and had to have surgery. Went to another, sports specific doctor, and he told me it was only sprained. He told me to get a third opinion, at any sports medicine doctor, and he'd pay for the visit if he was wrong. He wasn't. Ice, rest, and a little rehab later, I can play sports (if you call hacking around a field playing :D )

Good luck. If you didn't twist it, you are probably OK.

I've had four reconstructions (2 complete, 2 minor) on the same knee after destroying all the ligaments back in late 1980. My lower leg was 90 degrees to where it should have been.

The first reco: I was in hospital for 13 days, in plaster from hip to toe for 17 weeks, could not put any weight on the leg for another 14 weeks, off work for 6 months, and was only back to any sort of normality after 12 months.

When it was determined that the initial surgery had failed (ACL and PCL had not 'bonded' to the bone), it was time for another complete reco. Similar routine, similar result. As it stands, I've got no cartilage to speak of, and all ligaments are as loose as a two bit whore. This gives me 3.5 inches of lateral draw (which is more than 3 inches too much).

26 years later, and I still have swelling every day, can't walk any further than 500 metres, knee regularly fails to 'lock in' when walking which sees me collapse in a heap.

Have a brace attached permanently attached to my knee, and as surgeons here prefer to wait until a patient is at least 55 yo before performing joint replacements, I still have almost 12 years to wait before I am considered for a replacement.

Yea I plan on a second opinion, but if its worse Im going to stick with the first...!!!

I am going to be blunt here...isn't that a bit "Shallow?"

Really now, only stick with the opinion you like? And what if that opinion is wrong? A wrong diagnosis could hurt you in the long run. My opinion is that the CORRECT diagnosis is the best even if it isn't what you want to hear...at least you have a chance to properly address the problem. Go with the wrong diagnosis, and you make your injury worse by being too active when you shouldn't. Some of these guys have commented that they have terrible problems now...do you want to be like them? Go for the correct diagnosis, not the "your opinion makes me feel better doc" diagnosis. We've all heard that hindsight is better than foresight...don't fall into that category when you can make a decision to prevent it.

you know what sucks though? and everyone else here that's had an injured knee can back this up - even if there's no serious damage, that knee will forever be a problem now. knees are like backs, they just never heal right.

i've screwed up each one of my knees at least once really bad, and even though i'm only 26, they're both completely shot, i walk like an old man, it's horrible.
