  1. Louisiana is a different place. When I lived down there, there was a case where a guy shot and killed someone who was running off his property after trying to steal a bike that was chained up outside. The neighborhood was pretty split. The kid who got killed was like 13 or so and was just stealing bikes. Others think the "castle doctrine" applies to your outside property and even if the suspect is fleeing. In November 2007, a Houston-area man pulled out a shotgun and killed two men whom he suspected of burglarizing his neighbor’s home. Joe Horn, a 61-year-old retiree, called 911 and urged the operator to ” 2018Catch these guys, will you? Cause, I ain’t going to let them go.’ ” Despite being warned to remain inside his home, Horn stated he would shoot, telling the operator, ” 2018I have a right to protect myself too, sir. The laws have been changed in this country since September the first, and you know it.’ ” Two months earlier, the Texas Legislature passed a Stand Your Ground law removing a citizen’s duty to retreat while in public places before using deadly force. In July 2008, a Harris County grand jury declined to indict Horn of any criminal charges. · In Louisiana early this year, a grand jury cleared 21-year-old Byron Thomas after he fired into an SUV filled with teenagers after an alleged marijuana transaction went sour. One of the bullets struck and killed 15-year-old Jamonta Miles. Although the SUV was allegedly driving away when Thomas opened fire, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said to local media that as far as Thomas knew, someone could have jumped out of the vehicle with a gun. Thomas, said the sheriff, had “decided to stand his ground.” In March 2012, Bo Morrison was shot and killed by a homeowner in Wisconsin who discovered the unarmed 20-year-old on his porch early one morning. According to friends, Morrison was trying to evade police responding to a noise complaint at a neighboring underage drinking party. The homeowner, thinking Morrison was a burglar, was not charged by the local district attorney. In April, 22-year-old Cordell Jude shot and killed Daniel Adkins Jr., a pedestrian who walked in front of Jude’s car just as Jude was pulling up to the window of a Taco Bell drive-thru in Arizona. Jude claimed Adkins had waved his arms in the air, wielding what Judge thought was a metal pipe 2013 it was actually a dog leash. Jude shot the 29-year-old Adkins, who was mentally disabled, once in the chest. As of May, an arrest had not been made in the April 3 shooting. Arizona passed a Stand Your Ground law in 2010. · In January, a judge in Miami tossed out a second-degree murder charge against Greyston Garcia after he chased a suspected burglar for more than a block and stabbed him to death. The judge decided the stabbing was justified because the burglar had swung a bag of stolen car radios at Garcia 2013 an object that a medical examiner at a hearing testified could cause “serious harm or death.” The judge found Garcia was “well within his rights to pursue the victim and demand the return of his property.” http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/the-daily-need/five-‘stand-your-ground’-cases-you-should-know-about/14039/
  2. Off duty Chicago officer punches a 61 year old guy who was seated, eating food with his family in what looks like a food court. The officer has had at least 15 police misconduct complaints since June 2007. Video below. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-chicago-police-portillos-lawsuit-met-20161207-story.html
  3. God bless you Ms. Kaindoh but your son needs to do what is best for him. I wish our student section had as much dedication as she does. I heard she was at the Terps-Rutgers game and the student section was empty. ------------------ I think the Terps drop one to Howard tonight. Dont know why, Howard just won their first game against American.
  4. Is light incidental contact to a QB's helmet no longer a penalty? Between Bradford getting helmet contact on the final play against the Boys, Cravens helmet contact and then contact on Cousins helmet yesterday . ... Ive seen 3 clear but not very forceful helmet contacts not called. I like that. I dont like that the potential inconsistency btw ref crews as it requires a subjective call whenever "referee discretion" is in play.
  5. Awesome win over OSU. Cowans ability to drive and decision making once he has the defender on his hip is very impressive for the rookie. IM surprised this team was capable of a win like that so early into the season. Trimble seems like he got a little lost in the 2nd half not being the primary ball handler, which I found good and bad. I like that Trimble doesnt hesitate taking the big 3s to try and turn a game but I wish he would do it closer to the 3 pt line. I know those are kinda like heat check, im feeling it type of shots but work the shot clock and get a better look, not your first look 5 feet behind the line with 15 seconds left on the shot clock.
  6. Big test for the men Terps this Saturday at 9 pm. OSU plays a very very fast pace so it will be interesting to see who wins the tempo battle. Personally, I wouldnt mind seeing our guys get up and down the floor .... as long as they make their open looks.
  7. Only plausible assumption I can make is that 11 jurors think Manslaughter and 1 juror thinks Murder. What a dilemma that juror had. Do you stand firm with thinking it is Murder knowing that they might not retry the case and if they do, a jury may find him not guilty. Or do you acquiesce, officer is found guilty of Manslaughter, at least there is a serious conviction and no uncertainty re what a future jury might do. And the person making this decision could be you ... me ... the person in line behind you in 7-11 ... not a humane thing to place on a humans conscience imo.
  8. Unless you are comfortable watching a guy getting shot in the back and killed as he RAN AWAY and then having his dead lifeless body getting handcuffed for some reason .... do not watch the above video. I thought this was the one where the officer shot the person in the back and then blatantly planted the gun but that was a diff one. That one was that old officer with no training who was like a senior volunteer.
  9. rodmans on wisconsin ave. I got a case, I felt like such a jerk. Also the dob on the Two Hearted is 11/21/16 .. soooo fresh. You can also get a bottle of Hardywood's gingerbreadman stout and Wicked Weed's dipa Freak of Nature, gose, a chocolate porter and a whole bunch of their expensive sours. They also got Breury's so it happened on a tuesday. edit - I got the two hearted yesterday so I dont know if they caught on just yet. they may have. edit - also on line right now you can get Toppling Goliaths Pseudo Sue (my fav crushable beer, love that stuff) and Surly's dipa Abbrasive.
  10. That guys review sounds like what I thought it would taste like. Rodmans right now has a mismarked sale item - 12 pack cans of Bells Two Hearted for $8.99. Im pretty sure they meant to put the 4 pack of 16 oz cans on the $8.99 sale but got it mixed up.
  11. I agree with everyones thoughts. My silver lining is that we are starting 3 freshman in Cowan, Jackson and Huerter and by B10 tourney time, we should be a much better team. Also Dodd/Chekosky are playing significant minutes for the first time in their careers. I love all 3 of the frosh games. Cowan needs to dribble penetrate more and I think he will as he gets more mins and more comfortable. He has handles and a good sense of the game, where other players will be, etc. Jackson looks like he might jump to the NBA after next season, I think he will be a man among college boys by next year. Huerter has such a quick release but I wish he didnt settle for taking 3s. You got size and ball skills, take a guy off the dribble, collapse that D, dish and distribute. I dont know what to do w Nickens/Gill/Thomas/Dodd/Wiley. Just not productive and it seems Turg shortened his bench real early in the season. These guys needs to be mixed in and contribute.
  12. Fudge .. I checked his twitter last week when you said he was visiting PSU and he tweeted "glad to be back in Baltimore" .. yeah now his twitter is #weare .. **** PSU. edit - looks like local dematha product Shane Simmons was part of the recruiting ... at least Kasim Hill is still about MD. Dang this is gonna sting, hope more recruits dont bail now.
  13. Fudge ... The Maryland men’s soccer team had its championship run cut far short Sunday night, thanks to a stunning comeback from Providence in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland was up 4-1 in the second half, but Providence scored four late goals to complete an unbelievable comeback. The No. 1-seed Terps hadn’t lost a game all season. The championship run they seemed seemed destined for is done after one NCAA Tournament match. http://www.testudotimes.com/maryland-terps/2016/11/20/13693154/ncaa-tournament-soccer-providence-final-score-recap-results-game-stats
  14. Agreed, I saw so many Roots shows in the 90s. My lady asked if I wanted to see them when they come to the Fillmore next month and I was like .... "nah".
  15. Watch the video, pretty clear. We can not see the lower portion of their bodies but the officer never says anything to the effect that she kicking or kneeing him. Her upper body never moves in a motion to conclude she is striking with her lower body. Im sure there was contact as he is right up on her. Watch the video. There is video .. people lie, videos dont.
  16. I thought just the picture alone spoke volumes. Heres the video: http://abcnews.go.com/US/video-captures-police-officer-punching-woman-face/story?id=43604322 A video posted to Facebook captures an Arizona police officer punching a woman in the face while attempting to arrest her. The video shows a woman repeatedly saying she did not do anything wrong and asking if there is a warrant for her arrest. "You cannot arrest me until I know that I have a warrant," the woman says, while two Flagstaff police officers continue with the arrest. Suddenly, one of the officers punches the woman in the face, while her acquaintance shoots the video. Someone is heard on the tape calling her "Marissa," saying, "Hey, you can't hit a girl like that." After a few seconds, the woman starts crying and the officer continues with the arrest. "You're going to get tased," he is heard saying. "Get on the ground."
  17. http://www.testudotimes.com/maryland-terrapins-basketball-recruiting/2016/11/16/13643142/trevon-duval-top-list-nope Maryland had real interest in Duval, but it seemed like that waned in recent weeks. The Terps have had success on the recruiting trail recently, though, securing both commitments and signatures from four-star center Bruno Fernando and guard Darryl Morsell. Those two actually fill up the Terps’ scholarship chart, as Maryland only has two seniors on its current roster. Should someone declare for the NBA Draft (read: Melo Trimble), then another spot would open up, but it’ll be a long while before Mark Turgeon can actually land another prospect. ---------------------- Damnit we also lost out on top 30 recruit DJ Harvey to Notre Dame. WTF?! A player from Dematha, 5 mins from College Park ... and we dont land him?
  18. With Dodd's incredible ability to pick up fouls on moving screens, Chekovsky will probably see 15-20 mins a game, im guessing. My hopes of Nickens being a sharp shooter is almost nil at this point. Hitting less than 40% of your open 3s is average.
  19. Dems killed 50% of the filibuster. Repubs are going to kill the other 50%. Ive voted a straight Dem ticket for the past 20 years but both sides contributed to the death of the filibuster. When the Dems did it, they were warned and knew that it opened up the pandoras box. They did it anyway for short term gain. Just like the Repubs will do it now for 4 years of short term gain. Just sucks bc the Repubs are going to reap a huge windfall from it compared to what the Dems got.
  20. I dont know about that. Certainly w the Dems doing it first, it is a no-brainer at this point but I think the Repubs would have done it eventually anyway.
  21. FT Made-Attempted 17-22 37-42 The FT discrepancy was out of control. Im guessing the win percent for such a one sided game is below 10%. Chris Nochi made a good point. Compared to ACC refs, Big 10 refs are not as good. Last night was a Big 10 crew. I think Big 10 crews call to many off-the-ball touch calls that dont impact a play in any way.
  22. The Dems were going to do away w the filibuster on day 1 if they won. Come on man. Both parties knew, to the victor go the spoils.
  23. It makes my stomach turn. I am in disbelief as well. It gets worse. Since taking control of the Senate in early 2015, Republicans have confirmed only 17 federal judges, a historically low number. The Senate confirmed just 11 judges in 2015, the fewest since 1960. There have been only two appellate court judges approved since Republicans took control, with seven appeals court nominations left pending. If the Senate doesn't confirm any appellate judges this year, it will have confirmed the fewest since the 1897-98 session, when there were just 25 circuit court judges nationwide, compared with 179 now. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/05/senate-republicans-barack-obama-judicial-nominees-courts Because of the GOP obstruction and refusal to move on Federal Judge appointees of Pres Obama, there are 103 Federal Court judge vacancies just waiting to be filled by bible thumping conservatives. http://www.uscourts.gov/judges-judgeships/judicial-vacancies ------------------------------------------------------------------ What ever party had the WH and at least 51 seats in the Senate was going to kill the remaining bits of filibuster. Thats why this election was more important than any other election I can remember, and we lost .. to Donald Trump. ****ing sickening but any Dems bemoaning the Repubs for doing away w the filibuster for SCOTUS is the definition of sour grapes. We would have done it with a smile on our faces 2-3 times over the next 4 years.
  24. Im trying to mentally prepare myself for this season to not let unforced turnovers get to me bc we have a lot of new players and after watching that AU game, we are going to have a lot of unforced mistake turn overs. It drives me crazy to needlessly throw away possessions. Good year to judge Turg's coaching abilities. If the offense is stagnant for weeks at a time (which I think it will) and Turg's doesnt do something to correct it, that will be on him imo.
