  1. I got a few thoughts here. Global warming ain't so bad because: (1) Hundreds of people every year die of exposure due to cold. Raising the temp a few degrees would definitely save a few of those. (2) Hotter temperatures mean stronger solar light. Better for solar panels, so we can reduce our dependance of fossil fuels. (3) Hotter temps mean longer growing seasons. Plus with the extra solar energy we can convert that to run the farm equipment. (4) Hotter temps mean more polar ice melt. More water in the ocean translates to more rain on the land. More water for the crops we'll be growing during those longer growing seasons. (5) Hotter temps opens up land in the far northern areas of Canada. For every foot of shoreline lost due to polar ice melt, we'll gain 2 feet up in the great north. Virgin land for farming, livestock, gold mining, and building houses. (6) Hotter temps mean less need to use damaging chemical to melt ice off slippery sidewalks. Issue with high salt content in local streams? Solved. (7) Hotter temps mean it'll be easier to cook food. After all, its much easier to heat up an outdoor grill when it starts at 105 degrees vs. 75 degrees. Fast preheat time means less fuel used, quicker eating, and less wasted time. Frees up more time for gold mining and surfing on the new coastline.
  2. Why would Fury agree to fight Wilder now, when he has a shot at Wlad guaranteed the fight after his next one? I see Wilder going for someone like Adamek or Tony Thompson, then moving in to Klitschko. Wilder needs to find himself a couple harmless veterens to beat up on while he waits on the winner of Fury/Klitschko.
  3. Anyone ever built a stone archway? Thinking about making an outdoor fireplace on my patio, with a free standing arch. From what i understand I'll need a plywood semi-circular scaffold secured with 2x4. From the front, arch will consist of 9 stones. From above there will be 7 rows, making the depth approximately 35". Diameter of arch is about 28". Planning on using standard mortar, and there will also be 3 blocks removed from rows 3, 4, and 5 for a chimney. Arch sit upon two 30 inch sidewalls.
  4. So we building any more nuclear power plants? Is there still a moratorium on that one?
  5. Well, I'm moderately conservative, moderate enough to realize that climate change is the reality, beyond any reasonable doubt in my mind. Is it the result of human influence? My answer is also, almost certainly yes. Are there other factors in play, such as "natural stuff we can't control?" Probably not, after all the earth just doesn't change on its own very quickly (save for an asteroid strike or mega-volcano of some sort, which is like a one in everyone 200 million year occurrence). The question for me has always been this-- where do we draw the line, in particular when we live in this global community where everyone else has to be on board. Bottom line is that is easier and cheaper to produce goods without restrictive environmental regulation. Less cost, more production, better economy relative to our competitors on an international scale. If we give a foot, how many inches do we need China to give? Or Russia? Or India? Is this just a global game of chicken? And if we submit while our competitors don't, are we going to lose our position as the economic powerhouse? Does that effect our national defense? Any here honestly want China acting as the world's police force? Is it too much of a gamble to invest in green energy now, because that's based on an assumption that it will not only be cheaper, but at least equally efficient in 30 years? Fossil fuel resources remain abundant. One thing I love about that sneaky little Obama guy (other than the fact that he had the nuts to finish off Bin Laden by invading the sovereignty of a feux-ally) is that the U.S. is now (correct me if i'm wrong) the No. 1 producer of oil in the world, thanks to new methods of extraction (maybe its all forms of energy, I know natural gas and fracking is big). And we have massive, untapped off shore oil reserves, not to mention Alaska. Gives us a nice little cushion to continue the green energy charge, and I believe we need to take the lead. Just not at the expense of sacrificing too much. Ahh who cares what I think. This **** is above my pay grade.
  6. Diesel fuel works well too. Won't explode like gas when its lit. Burns slowly and you can easily control the burn area. Just spray it around, light it and watch those ****ERS die.
  7. So I have a new 2014 jeep wrangler. The dealer told me change oil at about 7500 miles when the oil indicator light comes on. I was headed out on a long trip, so I changed it at about 5700 miles beforehand. Now I'm at 8500 and the "change oil required" light is on. Its only been 2800 miles since my last oil change, so this makes no sense. Is the oil indicator simply designed to go off at certain mileage intervals, or does this mean there's an issue with my oil and it needs to be replaced. Thanks.
  8. So, I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in here.... is it fairly safe to call Otto porter a bust yet? Is this team so good that he can't break the rotation?
  9. Saw Heat with Sandra Bullock and the big girl from Bridesmaids. Thought it was pretty funny. Good movie to see with your wife/girlfriend.
  10. So, any interest in Klitschko/Povetkin this weekend? Personally thought this fight should have happened about 4 years ago. Seems like it wasn't too long ago when Wladimir was getting pasted by Corrie Sanders and Brewster. And the three knockdowns during the Peter fight. Someone just need to hit him and we'll have a fight.
  11. Thanks for the advice everyone. I went to a separate shop yesterday and had the rear pads and rotors replaced for $330. Well worth the saved aggravation.
  12. So I took my 2002 Ford Explorer to the dealer yesterday. He told me that I needed my rear brake pads, calipers, and rotors replaced (Est. $699.00) and my front right wheel bearing assembly ($525.00). Any thoughts on whether this is reasonable from anyone out there? First off, I would heed Zoony's advice. Shop around. If you are a female, find a male friend to take your car to another shop. I don't mean to sound sexist, but these places WILL take advantage of females. I have a friend who took her car (2005 Lexus SUV) to Midas (might have been some other place). They told her she needed all 4 rotors, calipers & brake pads replaced to the tune of $1300. She's in her late 50's and single. She called and told her boyfriend (an ex-mechanic who knows a lot about cars) what they wanted to do. He told her to get out of there ASAP. When she told Midas, they told her she was driving an unsafe vehicle and needed to sign a waiver that she wouldn't hold them liable if something happened. Seriously. Tried to scare her into paying for the work. She left and had someone just replace the pads. Let's just say the boyfriend got it straightened out at Midas the next day. When was the last time the brake pads were replaced, where did you take it & how much were you charged? Rarely do calipers & rotors need to be replaced. Ask if your rotors are scored. Ask why the calipers & rotors need to be replaced. I can't speak to the wheel bearing assembly. But it sounds pretty high. I thought they just repacked the bearings on those, but I'm not a mechanic. I would check the web for similar costs/ problems with you car. thanks. BTW, i'm not a chick, but I feel like one when I'm dealing with mechanics. Not to sound sexist. When applying the brakes, I hear a grinding/scraping noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. Not sure when the pads were last replaced, my dad had the vehicle until about 2008 and don't know the maintenence history.

  14. No, we can't do that now because it took too long in Iraq. The U.S. needs to let one of these crazy mofos actually strike a critical blow somewhere so that our citizens (and the rest of the world) will believe that evil still exists and that it must be identified and dealt with prior to wreaking its havoc.
  15. There's also a chance he is trying to defect with the nuclear weapons of NK. There is a guy I know who works at a think tank in DC who is an expert on Kim Jong Un. Knows more about him than anyone outside of NK. Says that his birthday was a couple weeks ago when the rhetoric started. Perhaps it would wise to get a nuclear sub out off the coast of NK to send some morse code signals to him, flash the light, respond with one ping for yes, two for no. "Do you intend to defect?"
  16. Right, it's the "Truman Show" effect. Which is actually pretty unsettling understanding the weaponry now possessed by NK. Don't expect much pushback from the citizens on that one. With the technology of the present age, their has to be a way to crack the information block. Drop cases of Iphones from 50,000 feet up. Send a satellite feed directly down to that region. Get them connected to facebook, cnn.com, espn, whatever it takes. EDIT: BTW, if I was an NK citizen and was told that the president shot a 35 on his first 18 hole round of golf, with several holes-in-one, my BS meter would go off. Sorry, but there has to be a line somewhere.
  17. So there's no biological mechanism to detect BS? I find that pretty difficult to believe, but then again I guess its a matter of perspective.
  18. So, is it safe to say that the North Korean gov't is a bit disconnected from reality? I know its a propaganda video, but the stupidity involved here is mind boggling. Do they really expect someone to be fooled by this? Do they think that little of their citizens? Is communication in NK so poor that this is all the people will ever get to see? Reminds me of the Truman Show. Then again, this could turn into one of those philosophical discussions about what is real and what isn't. It's all perception, right, so for all I know I'm the one being hoodwinked. Or are there just some really dumb people in NK who will fall for this? What level of oppression would be necessary for a rational person to believe this ****?
  19. For our resident mechanics, a question on manual transmissions. I have owned two vehicles in my lifetime that were stick shift, a 1986 Nissan pickup and my current vehicle, a 2002 Ford Explorer sport. Getting ready to get a new one, thinking I want to get manual. I seem to have an issue though. After about 20K miles (truck originally had 140K miles at purchase), I had to get a new clutch for my truck. This was back around 1998, so I was a teenage driver, etc., but seemed like rather quick problem. Got my explorer in 2002, and since then have had to replace the slave cylinder once at about 75K miles, and get a fully clutch replacement at about 130K miles. Just wondering if there's something in my driving habits that may be causing the clutch to fail. Generally speaking I downshift quite a bit, as opposed to going straight from 3rd or 4th gear to neutral when breaking a light, (i.e. I'll go down to 3rd first, maybe 2nd, before popping it into neutral and hitting the brakes before a light or stop sign). I'm also very strict in my upshifting, so that I never crank my RPMs above about 3000. Bascially ride second gear to 27 mph, 3rd gear to about 40-45mph, 4th to about 55, then 5th gear above that. I was told at one point this shifting procedure would save my engine and transmission, but I'm also thinking that the amount of shifting is causing my clutch to go bad before its time. Any thoughts on how to improve efficiency?? Does this truly "save" my engine and transmission? Thanks in advance.
  20. Quick question: Any good ideas for getting cable or speaker wire behind drywall, running horizontally (studs are vertical), with insulation in the way? I assume its necessary to punch out portions of the sheet rock, perhaps drill through each stud, etc. Can't get above it either with a snake. Thanks.
  21. His field goal percentage is the lowest in the league among qualifiers. I don't care how nice his shot may look, this guy's a dud. You simply cannot shoot any worse. Shouldn't we expect him to beat at least one ******* guy?
  22. Hey, just got out of jail a couple days ago. Good to see that the paloffs are coming up soon. Lots of things have changed. Kind of feel like Brooks from Shawshank. At least we got the paloffs
  23. Ok, what is the most beers you have ever had in one sitting, i.e. in one day/night before passing out??? You can estimate. For me, I think maybe 15, but its not like I was counting.
  24. I might be the only one saying this, but Logan Paulsen is going to be the one taking us there.
