  1. Hold off on the Fantastic Four excitement...several sources and both FOX and Marvel said there is no deal in place and refuted DenOfGeek's scoop However, where there is smoke there is fire, as we saw immediately before Sony and Marvel struck a deal over Spider-Man. But something did occur between Fox and Marvel in a related matter. Marvel just announced two FOX mutant-based television series, "Hellfire" and "Legion". The thing is, Fox has mutant character television rights but needs final approval from Marvel, which means they've been working together, coincidentally after Kevin Fiege got promoted above Ike Perlmutter. Ike is the guy that took previous negotiations personal and burned all bridges between the studios when discussing FF before the recent abomination came out.
  2. Yeah Gravity seems to be somewhat polarizing. I felt it was tense and gripping all the way through. I didn't think the actors themselves were as important as the cinematography, pacing, and realism.
  3. Yep, The Martian was pretty good. There were a couple super-tense parts and some unexpected humor, which was nice. I have more gripes than praise though:( First, I know A LOT of time passes in the movie, so the skipping ahead in huge chunks was kind of frustrating. The second, I didn't care for the blatant deus ex machina that kept popping up. Finally, the explanations and Mars satellite jargon (which I thought I was fairly good at) zipped right on by. I'd give Gravity the edge in a head-to-head as it appeared to be much more "grounded" or closer to our science. End result: still very entertaining. 8/10.
  4. Dayum, Chew. Sounds awesome. I just heard about Sicario yesterday when I was looking up times for Martian. I don't know how long Sicario will be at the theatre down here, so I'll definitely have to see it this weekend.
  5. Not in the theatre, please! I'm going to see The Martian at 9:45 tonight with a group of friends. Two of them just finished the book but I haven't read it yet. Goin' in dry. I'm REALLY looking foward to it though. I'm at a true 50/50 split on Prometheus, but it was beautifully shot, amazing mood, wonder, and music...Ridley can do sci-fi like a mutha.
  6. I can see that. I think for me, it was because I heard so much ridicule for it and when I popped the disc in, I was in the mood for big sci-fi.
  7. Just watched John Carter (of Mars). Wow, surprisingly good and it had that that huge, epic feel to it. Now I see why people have been starting to speak out and say that it was much better than it's box office suggested. I know it went through a few name changes during production before Disney settled on the generic name. Disney had no idea how to approach marketing and demographics with this property. It was solid all around, even a strong and emotional performance from Taylor Kitsch, who is widely regarded as box office poison. A good 7.5/10.
  8. The Ridley quotes over the last few days have all been been confusing or odd. From one quote, there will be three Prometheus films before Blomkamp's Alien film releases, which will be like eight years from now. This tells me Ridley got jealous and selfish when Blomkamp got started and is now off the project...I mean, what is Blom going to do while this is going on? Overall, I'm not too happy about what I'm hearing.
  9. I had to re-read your post about three times and look up Cooties, because I thought you meant you watched 28 Days Later with third-graders lol.
  10. I thought the ending of Ex Machina was great. One of those rare situations where the viewer/audience is truly unsure of which scenario will unfold. Sure, some people may have guessed correctly (as a friend of mine at work did when watching it) but you couldn't be sure until it was over. At first, the only part I didn't like was the scene at the end going back to Caleb a second time, as it was unecessary. His story ended with the noisy/static one prior. However, it conributed to the "unsure" outcome and created doubt and hope to mess with the audiences' minds.
  11. I'm with Chew and Momma on Chappie. Very underrated flick and quite emotional. The "sleep" scene on the bridge when robbing the truck was intense.
  12. I'm torn on Prometheus...it's the true love-hate relationsip for me. I loved the visuals, cinematography, atmosphere, mood, action, and pacing. All brilliant. I hated the characters' descision-making (or lack thereof) in conjunction with their profession, the non-existent logic, and baseless character motives. Lindelof really fleeced Ridley on this script and Ridley did not perform due diligence by watching Aliens Vs. Predator before filming. Regardless, I still go back and watch this film every two or three months.
  13. Just watched The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe with Sam Neill in a minor role. A very interesting thriller that got pyschological in parts due to the minimal aesthetic. As I continue to think about it, it had a vibe similar to First Blood. But I've got to say, Dafoe was really good in this - he is definitely talented and a pleasure to watch. I can't decide on a score but I'm leaning to high 70's/low 80's
  14. Reviews are everywhere...and it's getting slaughtered. FOX deserves it but I feel terrible for the actors - all of them are extremely talented but were overqualified and miscast for this film.
  15. Just got done seeing Shaun The Sheep. A clever little movie with some good visual puns, and a couple great ones for the adults. It's the same "clay" animation studio that created Wallace & Grommit, so I knew the movie was legit before I saw it. Another solid 8/10.
  16. Damn, Caps team looks solid. Ultimately I just want more Bucky/Winter Soldier. Edited - took out a potential spoiler. Sorry about that
  17. Really digging that red band trailer! Now all we need are word-balloons and thought-bubbles! *sniffs the gunsmoke* "I'm touching myself tonight."
  18. Thanks. That was the next stage of my rant. The Fantastic Four are "fantastic", science-y, adventurous explorers. With crazy powers that require a lot of effective cgi. In today's comic book movie boom, anything under a $180M budget for such property is mailing it in for cash grab.
  19. That's what really irks me about the Fox films. They change characters to be out of character, their appearances, costumes, ages, and powersets just because they can, like a big "f*** it". Deadpool may be the first movie that gets everything right, and that's only because Fox was hands off and it was Reynolds' film all the way through.
  20. Just got back from Mission Impossible at our brand-spankin' new theatre down here at Pax River. The theatre is literally right across the street from my condo, woo-hoo! MI:RN has some real good action, great stunts, and great vehicle chases. In a way, it is what Furious 7 wanted to be. Definitely entertaining. And Tom still has it. 8/10.
  21. Watched Rushmore and The Machine yesterday. Rushmore 7/10 Quirky as expected, but damn if Max wasn't an awkwardly evil kid. Even at the very end, it still felt like Max was plotting something to get with Rosemary (but for a woman like her, I would never give up either lol). Wes Anderson's style is a little too pretentious for my tastes, but it was enjoyable. The Machine 7.5/10 A B-level sci-fi flick about androids. I would say it should be closer to an "A" without the fanfare. Very well done with some surprisingly good acting. The cgi and effects were pretty damn good too. And there were some big surprises (not quite "twists") that I did not see coming. Lots of conspiracy at the beginning which made it somewhat confusing, you just need to power through and be rewarded.
  22. Cable is as mutant as they come, the child of Cyclops and Jean Grey. I agree though, get X-Force up and running, built around Cable, Domino, and Deadpool. And Rated-R. This Fantastic Four reboot should never have happened and Fox should have been working on X-Force this whole time. Age Of Apocalypse was the absolute perfect setup. Another missed opportunity. And for a little rant - FF has been the biggest instance of studio/film-rights spite in recent memory. The rights would have reverted to Marvel THIS August had the movie not been made. Fox had a contract option on both director Josh Trank and actor Michael B. Jordan (the shoehorned race change). With reversion approaching they cobbled together a script, existing contract options, and an embarrassingly cheap budget (Trank's Chronicle was made on $12 million). And then there is Trank himself, who was relieved of filming duties (came to shoots high, thousands of dollars in damages to his house rental in Baton Rouge, meltdowns) and Vaughn was brought in for post, editing, and reshoots. There is a reason Disney removed Trank from Star Wars.
  23. I just saw Ant-Man as well. A lot of fun with some really funny parts. I loved everything about the train-set battle royale (not a spoiler since it was in trailer). And straight up, Michael Pena steals the movie...man, he was awesome!
  24. Whoa hold on a sec - Jordana shows the goods? That alone sounds worth it.
