our first Dane?...if he's part of our Hogs 2.0...can his nickname be HAMlet??

Here’s everything you need to know about the Atlanta Falcons undrafted rookie offensive tackle Andreas Knappe.

Measurements (from nfldraftscout.com)

  • Height: 6-foot-8
  • Weight: 311 pounds
  • 40-yard Dash: 5.17 seconds
  • Bench Press: 23 reps of 225 pounds
  • Broad Jump: 106 inches
  • Vertical Jump: 30 inches
  • 20-yard Shuttle: N/A
  • 3-Cone Drill: N/A

Background

Knappe wasn’t your typical college offensive tackle. A keen handball player and national champion at archery in his native Denmark, he was only introduced to football as an 18 year old by a friend. Knappe was soon a standout player on the country’s best team, the Triangle Razorbacks, but he still had a long way to go.

The strength of his tape was enough to interest Connecticut and Fordham, but there was still the small matter of visiting. After working for a year, Knappe finally had enough money to be able to travel and, after meeting with both, decided to continue his journey at Connecticut.

After a red-shirt season and a brief stint on the defensive line, Knappe’s big break came when he was moved to right tackle in 2014. The man known as “Thor” never let go of the spot, starting the final 32 games of his college career.

Strengths

  • Effective pass protector who is able to defend against speed and power.
  • Huge body who is difficult to get round and can physically dominate rushers if they get close to him.
  • Intelligent, hard worker with a strong desire to learn. Will improve further as he continues to learn intricacies of the game.
  • Despite being a late starter, he’s got a good amount of experience having started for the final two and a half years of his college career.

Weaknesses

  • Relies on physicality rather than technique. Occasionally gets his angles wrong and can play too high at times, leaving gaps for defenders to attack.
  • Having just turned 26, Knappe is old for a rookie. For a player who is raw and still needs to develop, this could limit his ceiling.
  • Questionable run blocker. Doesn’t show the mean streak to drive defenders out of the way and create gaps.

Knappe was known as Thor in college. Also (just in case he gets the call to the big club), neither the "K" nor the "e" at the end are silent. His last name is pronounced Ka-NAP-ee.

Danish is similar to German.  In German, the word for "knee" is "knee" - k-nee.  (At least, I think that's right.)

Sure hope the guy can play.  We don't need him long-term, just as a stop-gap backup tackle for the next few years.

Knappe wasn't the only player in town on Monday. The Redskins also worked out veteran cornerback Nolan Carroll, who previously plied his trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. With injuries to Bashaud Breeland and Josh Norman, Carroll could be seen as a stop-gap until they return
There's no word yet on whether or not the Redskins offered him a contract

Even though I am an alum, fan, and season ticket holder of UConn. I am also realistic. Knappe was signed to the practice squad, so I am not going to do cartwheels over him just yet. On the other hand, he replaces a player 3 years younger, so they must see something in him that they (and two other teams) did not in Ugokwe.

In terms of what he can offer, I wouldn't put too much stock in the performance of UConn as a team over the last 6 years. Knappe has to be judged as an individual, which is hard to do in football, I know, as the ultimate team game, especially on the offensive line.

After the 2011 Fiesta Bowl, The former UConn Athletic director (Jeff Hathaway) went with the "safe" hire in 62 year old former "Coach" Pasqualoni, who brought Knappe in. UConn then hired a new President, who (thankfully) put Hathaway on notice almost immediately. Meanwhile UConn went 5-7, 5-7, and 0-4 during Pasqualoni's tenure, with a pretty pathetic offense and recruiting. A common thought was that Pasqualoni spent too much time in the NFL coaching guys who already had a big motor. The interim coach (then offensive coordinator, TJ. Weist) went 3-5, but was not retained and the playcaller (old friend, Shane Day) came here. Warde Manuel (current Michigan AD) hired Bob Diaco and is the coach for whom Knappe mostly played.

The offense went from bad to worse and recruiting wasn't much better. Then Diaco admitted that he was hardly involved in any offensive meetings or game planning. He is a defensive coach, but that is not exactly what you want to hear from the HMIC. Honestly though, none of this is Knappe's fault. He was a pretty consistent anchor on the line, even though the offense could not get in a semblance of a rhythm. Diaco effectively passed blame to his assistants, who had as much play calling and game planning experience as he did...pretty much none.

Poor guy doesn't have a wikipedia page.  Does anyone know how to start one?  All of our great men need a proper wiki page.

I did some research on him:

Darrelle Shavar Revis (born July 14, 1985) is an American football cornerback who is currently a free agent.

Do you think we should sign him?  He might come cheap since no one has picked him up yet.
