  1. Just read this piece by Tom Nichols in the Atlantic, which highly pertains to the discussion in here today: https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2024/05/a-failure-of-imagination-about-trump/678278/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=social
  2. This morning on Twitter Noem apparently said that she kiiled the dog to save her kids. She is digging a deeper hole. MAGA fanboy John Nolte of Breitbart says this is the biggest implosion of a political career since Gary Hart.
  3. "People" in general are extraordinarily fickle and are easily manipulated by whatever media they are consuming.
  4. Show me a poll where Trump and Biden are tied with the black vote. Trump's share of the black vote has increased since 2016, but maxes out at 20 percent tops. Covid is going to result in back-to-back-to-back one term presidents. Trump, then Biden, back to Trump. Trump fanboy John Nolte of Breitbart even admits Trump's behavior during covid was terrible and cost him the 2020 election. The inflationary effects of the covid stimmy, while much passed under Trump, mainly occurred under Biden. Trump would've won reelection if it hadn't been for covid, and probably would've anyway if he didn't behave like a jackass during it. Biden's overall performance, despite the inflation, in most elections would probably be favored. But the guy is 81. And nobody is comfortable with Kamala Harris. Who really is to blame are the GOP voters who still insist the 2020 election was stolen and refused to back Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis. And yes, unfortunately, there are plenty of independent voters who now really don't seem to care about what happened in the aftermath of Nov 2020, including on 1/6/21. Additionally, the George Floyd related unrest that occurred in 2020 likely did not help Trump. Similarly, the Gaza-related protests on US campuses are doing Biden no favors.
  5. Winning Cups is tough. It will be interesting to see how many McDavid or Matthews wind up with when all is said and done. But the Caps at least should've made more SCF or even ECF appearances during the Ovechkin era.
  6. Yes, comparing gas prices to them during covid is disingenuous, but from 2017-19 it seems like they were around 250-275 per gallon (as they were for much of Obamas second term). Yes, Biden has had to deal with the Ukraine situation which sent prices to 5 dollars a gallon, but prices in the 3s is higher than under Trump.
  7. Not sure what the specific complaint here is. Are you saying that Biden's messaging regarding inflation isn't good?
  8. You can do a little extrapolation from the nationals. I'm not sure what the national polls had Biden up by right before the 2020 election. The WaPo poll heading into 2016 gave Hillary a two point edge, which is what it wound up being. And of course she lost the EC. Biden won the pop vote by 4 last time. I think the polls need to show at least that much of an edge for Dems to feel somewhat confident.
  9. We had made the playoffs in both the previous seasons (2007 and 2015).
  10. In 2016 Trump and Hillary accounted for 94 percent of the vote. That increased to 98 percent in 2020 with Trump and Biden. I know people say they are dissatisfied with their choices at the top of the major party tickets, but I just can't see Kennedy getting a great chunk of votes. The latest polls have him around 8 percent, and I'd be very surprised if he gets even half that.
  11. Sucks that even when the Caps won the Cup, they didn't retain the coach that got them there. And then covid squashed what should've been the Nats victory lap year after their 2019 title.
  12. It looked for a while like the Caps could get third place in the division. Now I don't see them catching the Islanders for that spot, and the problem with Pittsburgh is that the Pens will likely have the tiebreakers (RW, ROW) in case the Caps wind up with the same number of points
  13. I started watching the Skins in the early-to-mid 70s living in the DC area, but moved to the Philly era in late 76. This coincided with the start of the Eagles getting good under Vermeil and, for the Skins, the end of the Allen era and the heartbreak of the few years under Pardee, collapsing in 78 after the 6-0 start and then still the worst loss in team history to me at the end of the 79 season against the Cowboys to miss the playoffs altogether. The way that the 82 season unfolded was just magical. My first ever live regular season NFL game was the opener that season against the Eagles at the Vet, where we came back to win in OT. And then a family friend sending me the original Hogs T-shirt right before the playoffs started. Of course I laugh at this thread when I read it as "the best moment as a Washington fan in 32 years" and I thought it was only focused on football, and people are bringing in either football memories from over 32 years ago or ones from the Caps and Nats. Not to mention that the OP started it after the 0-2 start.......and we know how it finished! But like you said, I think better days are ahead for the franchise under new ownership.
  14. I don't think either threw the election to a major campaign. Clinton's lead in 1992 actually widened when Perot exited the race and narrowed when he came back in. Nader got less than three percent of the vote in 2000 and less than two percent in Florida.
  15. I like the inside of Nats Park, where you can see the field from the concourse. But yes, the exterior leaves a lot to be desired.
  16. The facilities for the players at the actual stadium are important, but the quality of the training facility is even moreso when it comes to attracting talent. It hasn't helped that Ashburn is supposedly a dump.
  17. Go to 7:30 mark. Painkiller and I are on the upgraded Griffith Stadium bandwagon!
  18. Of course, Harris also owns the Sixers, and the arena they are proposing in central Philly isn't supposed to happen until 2030 or so. With the improvements made to Commanders Field, who knows what the timeframe for a new stadium for this team is. Hard to believe that this team has been in Landover for 27 years and the stadium has not hosted a division round or higher playoff game. We still have time to have a few successful seasons at the current place before the move happens, but the place will never be revered because of the performance of the team under the former owner.
  19. Yeah, of course Camden Yards was the first of the retro-style baseball stadiums, which is why its so revered. Like you said, I don't know how you could bring a retro-model to football. Maybe we need to go further back than RFK and build a place modeled after Griffith Stadium. I'm in agreement that I wouldn't be that crazy about us having a place like Jerryworld or SoFi. Of the newer places, Allegiant in Vegas seems more of a model to emulate.
  20. Not sure how applicable this is since it's an arena, but these are new design plans for the area around the place Harris wants to build for the Sixers: https://www.crossingbroad.com/2024/03/sixers-release-revised-design-plans-for-proposed-market-street-arena.html
  21. Eagles fan reporting his prices are going up, despite one of the "additional" home games for them this year being in Brazil: https://www.crossingbroad.com/2024/03/eagles-season-ticket-holder-with-six-seats-says-theyre-paying-500-more-for-one-fewer-game-in-2024.html
  22. Wasn't sure where to put this, but this clip from Ben Shapiro yesterday is getting a lot of attention: I thought for most people these days, Medicare was 65, but full SS benefits are at 67, and you can start collecting and receive less as early as 62 and max out if you wait until 70. Shapiro seems all over the place. If you want to make the case of raising the age for full SS, fine...although I'm not sure what that age is. It's also true that there are people who don't deal with retirement well from the sense of purpose angle. But Shapiro brings up Biden so much in this clip alone that it seems like his purpose is just to highlight "how old Joe is."
  23. I read Nancy Mace is going to be on Maher's show this week. While I think Bill will likely avoid the rape topic after what happened Sunday, I would like for him to ask her why, when she indicated after 1/6 that Trump shouldn't be allowed to hold office again, that she at least couldn't bring herself to endorse Haley or DeSantis, instead of backing Trump in late Jan. Not that I expect an honest answer.
  24. True that the problem has been kicked down the road. The laws we have seem somewhat squishy, and efforts various presidents have made seem to encounter resistance from the judicial system. However, the one metric regarding border encounters has really shot up under Biden after staying fairly constant under Obama and Trump. I'm not sure why that is. PeterMP had some thoughts about it in the immigration thread.
