The Contender

The Contender is on nbc tonight at 9:30. Interested to see how the show is and how Sugar Ray and Sly Stallone do on tv. I heard that this is the most expensive reality show ever! :wtf:

How can this show cost that much? Burnett, the producer is just all over the place.

Kinda liked it, though I don't trust the presentation of the fights, what with the slow-motion hits and edited-in reactions of the crowd. The producers can manipulate the presentation of the fight's course to the point where it becomes hard to trust what one is seeing. It's certainly more exciting than watching the dead moments in a live fight, but it strips the experience of authenticity, to some extent.

That being said, I still enjoyed the final fight, and the show as a whole (what I saw after 24 was over, that is).

thanks bro, but I was wondering if anyone went to HS or knows this guy personally. No one claims to be from Great Falls if they are from somewhere else. Regardless I am rooting for the guy, showed up in a suit for the 1st show, everyone else was wearing shorts or pimp gear. Not sure what to make of that but he will get his chance.

good show regardless..

Based upon the first show, I will definitely watch the rest of the season! This show will refresh peoples opinions about reality tv. The final fight (if it really went down the way it was shown - which by the scorecards seems to be) may have been one of the best fights to see within the past couple years.. Underdog takes on a champ, splits the cards till the final round, then puts everything he has into it and wins! - ironically straight out of a rocky movie...

Not sure how many people saw this on Monday but I was thoroughly impressed with it. The show was well done and deserves a look if you haven't seen it.

I agree with Cool Hand's comments about the editing in the final fight that could've been manipulated, but overall, I thought the drama was more than expected in a reality show. There was some pretty good trash talking amongst a couple of the fighters (and there can only be more). There's nothing like seeing these guys talk sh*t to each other - and then have to back it up. Stallone was cheesy but he was bearable and so was Sugar Ray.

The next show is tonight at 10:00 on nbc. This is definitely one of the new shows that I'll be watching.

nice I saw the first one and it was very good. That means we have a lineup of Survivor, Trump, then Contender. You know Burnett is making mad money all 3 r his shows right?

Yeah, in the past year he also came out with The Restaurant, The Casino, and coming soon: The Apprentice with Martha Stewart. :notworthy

This guy is already a mogul and it doesn't look like he's slowing down. Seems just like yesterday when I watched the 1st season of Survivor.

I'm not pos. about this, so don't quote me!

It was said on the radio (some talk station) this am that one of the participants commited suicide during the taping (not on air).

If this is true, that is pretty messed up!

Yeah it is sad one of the guys on the East team (I think it was the shorter black guy) committed suicide. Sugar Ray and Stalone were at the funeral.

One another note I like the way the edited the fight scenes so that you can see the quick hard punches. A lot of the time when you watching an actual fight on live TV you could miss a lot of those good shows.

I think this show is 10 times better than the one De La Hoya had out on Fox. The fighters on that show were horrible they were all amateurs, it looked like they just pulled guys off the street to fight.

Whatever happened to the other boxing show on Fox.

The one with De La Hoya didn't even make it the whole season. They ended up showing the rest of the episodes on F/X it did that bad.

Fox hasn't done too well with the knock off reality shows. They stole all three of these reality shows: The Contender, Super Nanny, and Wife Swap. They got outdone in all three. They stole the idea and then tried to get it out before anyone else. I guess since they rushed it the quality suffered.

‘Contender’ contestant commits suicide

Turpin reportedly having problems since completion of reality show

The Associated Press

Updated: 7:02 p.m. ET Feb. 17, 2005

PHILADELPHIA - A promising young boxer who got the break of a lifetime when he was selected by NBC’s upcoming reality TV program, “The Contender,” committed suicide.

Police said 23-year-old Najai Turpin shot himself in the head at 4 a.m. Monday while sitting with his girlfriend in a parked car outside the West Philadelphia gym where he trained. Investigators were unsure why he took his life.

An NBC spokeswoman said the producers, cast and crew of “The Contender” were shocked and saddened by Turpin’s death. The program, scheduled to debut March 7, will go on as planned.

Produced by reality TV mogul Mark Burnett, “The Contender” will follow the lives of 16 boxers competing against each other for a chance at a million-dollar purse.

The episodes involving Turpin had already been taped.

Percy “Buster” Custus, a trainer who had worked with him since Turpin was 12, said the boxer had enjoyed his experiences with the show but seemed troubled in recent weeks. He said Turpin abruptly left a training camp in the Poconos and returned home to Philadelphia, saying he missed his family.

“None of us really know what brought this about,” Custus said Tuesday. “You just want to see the boys come out of the neighborhood. From the time they’re young kids, you really want to see them make it. And he was right there.”

Turpin had a 13-1 record and had won a city Recreation Department title before he was picked for “The Contender.”

A biography on the show’s Web site called him an “extremely soft-spoken” but focused fighter who worked two day jobs to support his family. He had a 2-year-old daughter.

“You would never know he was a fighter,” Custus said. “He was a tough guy in the ring. He was a vicious fighter. But outside the ring he was a different man.”

Police said they didn’t know where Turpin got the gun. He was not licensed to carry a handgun and the weapon was not registered to him.

NBC released a statement from Burnett in which he called Turpin a “great fighter with tremendous heart and courage.”

“The episode in which he was most depicted will stand as a wonderful testament to who he was. It will not be changed,” Burnett wrote.

A tribute to Turpin will be added to the show. Viewers will also be offered a chance to donate money to a trust fund set up to support Turpin’s child.

NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks declined to say how Turpin had fared in the show, which is to conclude with a live championship bout between two finalists in May. She said, however, that the show will not need to be overhauled because of Turpin’s death.

Every contestant was being paid $1,500 per week to stay in training pending the finale.

Turpin worked out at the James Shuler Memorial Gym, a haven for serious fighters from a rough and impoverished neighborhood.

Tybius Flowers, another boxer at the gym, was murdered last year shortly before he was to appear as a key witness in a murder trial.

Dude don't dump on De La Hoya! HE is one of the most repected men in boxing. Not only is he one of the best fighters ever, but he puts in time to help out disadvantaged youth... In my opinion, he is the D Green of boxing

The selection process for this show was a joke. A friend of mine tried out for the show. He beat the **** out of the 2 guys he had to fight, one of which was a "championship" fighter. But because my buddy didn't have any "real" fights under his belt, he didn't make the cut.

I only saw the fight at the end. It was hard to tell what they edited out. I liked the slow motion of the hard shots. It was also interesting watching Sugar Ray's reaction to some of the punches (assuming the reactions were in context with what was shown in the fight).
