If Samuels is release is won't because he forces the Redskins to do so. Its in his best interest to restructure and/or extend the contract.

His cap hit is 9.6M but he will be paid 6.6M this year and he should have a reasonable expectation that he would get double that amount in signing bonus and salary this year if he is a FA come 3/1. Also if he doesn't force Snyder's hand there's always the risk that one of the young players or V Parker will show promise in camp and some other FA will catch Danny's eye and Samuels could be Trotterized and cut 6/1 after teams have spent their big money.

With the interior play sucking so bad, it but too much load on Samuels. He's a good O lineman who now knows the system Why start over with an unknown commodity that will have to relearn everything.

"How long have we been hearing that???"

Not long enough. One season is not enough time.

Exactly. People who bash Samuels seem to forget that his ankle has been bad all year. Take a look at Raymer and Dockery first.

Sorry, but this is the same excuse given EVERY year for Samuels' supposed dropoff - he's playing hurt. Sooo,...either he's brittle, or just as overrated as the mediots suggest.

Samuels IS good, he's just NOT great, and we've been paying him like he's beyond great.

Even so you will find few teams wishing to give him a base salary of 6.6M for any year at his level of play.

Wouldn't he be best off financially to take the 6.6M this year and then wait and get the huge signing bonus the next offseason?

If he were to restructure he could get the fat signing bonus while deferring the 6.6M to make the contract more palatable for the Redskins.

Of course he would only do this if he were offered a contract that would make it beneficial for him to do so. Its a slippery slope and as you suggest Snyder will have to make it worth his while.

This is good news. I like this quote:

"I think something special is going to start happening here and it's just a matter of time."

Ramsey said the same thing

That's PC bull**** every player says. They get paid to play and it'd be nice if they won, but they are still getting paid.

Samuels is a good player, but not one of the best, and deffinately not worth being the highest paid player on the team.

Well said. Maybe he doesn't remember Shar Pourdanesh and Joe Patton. Since Samuels has been here the left side has been adequate. I damn sure don't want to go back to our QB getting blind sided at will.

That's fine, but he should only make an "adequate" salary to go along with his "adequate" play.

I'll risk the continuity if major bucks are saved. There are other players to resign, not to mention a high draft pick to pay.

im fine with samuels IF HE restructures his deal to help the team , if he doesnt then hes not concerned about the teams needs anyway and we dont need that .... i would LOVE to see elton brown over there with him and with a jansen back , maybe another center or something , we could be better ...but im sure the coaches will make the best line possible for next year cuz they know it is needed in the worse way

We can get him, a much better tackle, for about the same price as Samuels. If you can sign him(Jones), deal Samuels to a desperate team(ie St. Louis).

Big contracts RARELY get dealed. Players rarely get traded period. These trades are very unrealistic. And Walter Jones will be signed for significantly more money and will be paid among the top tackles, and maybe players, in the NFL. It's ridiculous to say he's going to get paid as much as Samuels' new contract.

Actually, if St. Louis would bite on a trade, this would be a fantastic offseason move. Jones is bona fide Pro Bowler and natural left tackle, well worth the cash Samuels and his agent will ask for...

Walter Jones is an UFA this coming offseason whom Seattle has already stated it will not franchise again. We'd only need to do a sign and trade deal with St. Louis.

Samuels is more likely to be traded for two reasons:

1-His contract is ending, and makes the cap crunch easier.

2-They wont have to pay his bonus, see 1.

We would have to assume 2.6 million of his contract (pro-rated bonus acceleration), and it would make the cap hit to any team around 7-9 million, which could be cleared off the cap easier.

San Diego would be easier to trade him to since they're 23 million under the cap. Arizona for similar reasons: they're 19 million under the cap and need a LT. I'd be happy with a second rounder for him.

Perfect! We could move Turley to left guard in place of Dockery. Buges would LOVE a mauler like him. He wants to play on grass as well, and is no longer a welcome player on the Rams. Wonder how bad his injury was...wasn't it a back problem? That always bodes ill for a lineman...

I would consider moving him or Jansen to LT or move Turley to Guard. Turley is healthy(according to the St Louis Press). Also Turley's contract is good. He signed a 5 year contract before the 2003 season worth 26.5 million(12.5 in bonus that the skins wouldnt pay). So, QED, we would be on the hook for him: 3 years, 9-10 million bucks. Cheap, and good. Turley would be 30 before the 2005 season also.
