Ouch.

I know this isn't necessarily the thrust here, but it's worth saying that (at least I) don't believe the kids 100 years ago were any smarter, just that the educational system has evolved almost beyond recognition in this country during that time. For more reasons than I care to go into. One wonders what they'll think of today's curricula in 2102 ...

I know this: I'm going to have some fun with my 7th-grader tonight.

I've seen this test before. You guys have to put it into context. Ask these kids about DNA, computers, airplanes, automobiles, rockets, whateva. Those kids didnt have to deal with nearly as much breadth of material as children nowadays are exposed to. Now, I would admit that the educational system blows chunks, but I dont think that this test is quite as difficult as it seems to us in the modern era.

Furthermore, the idea of survival of the fittest applied. Schools didnt teach down to the dumbest common student. If someone was stupid (and their are plenty today) they were usually out of school and working prior to the 8th grade. Today, everyone is expected to graduate highschool, to the extent that they dumb down the curriculum so no one gets his or her feelings hurt.
