Tom [Giants fan]
Dolphins | Interested in Bettis - from www.KFFL.com Wed, 25 Aug 2004 14:05:52 -0700 Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Miami Dolphins have showed an interest in Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis. However, the Steelers cannot afford to trade Bettis, who counts $2 million under their 2004 salary cap. If Pittsburgh elects to trade Bettis, then he would count $3 million due to the remaining prorated portion of his signing bonus at $1 million per year through 2006. Couldn't the Steelers redo his contract to make it easier for them to trade him? I wonder why this is never done. Than, after they trade him, he gets a new contract from Miami. Does this seem to logical or am I missing something where this can't be done?
Phat Hog
Wow… talk about an act of desperation!
Neophyte
I don't think you can redo a contract to fix money that has already been paid in the form of a bonus. Tough to spread that out beyond the point a guy no longer plays for you. I don't think math works that way.
DieselPwr44
Does Bettis have any left in the tank? As someone said earlier, the Phins' are getting hard up for an rb. :2cents:
Nighthawk
I wasn't an English Major in college but shouldn't it read, "the Miami Dolphins have shown an interest in..." and not "have showed an interest in...?"
Krayzie
why dont we trade one of our rb the ones we know were going to cut....
Chachie
Good. Get him out of Pittsburgh and off our schedule.
Fred Jones
Actually, I believe you can redo the contract, however, Bettis would have to return a portion of his bonus that was already paid to him for the Steelers to benefit. Since this practice is never done, deals like this are never done.
illone
Bettis has trimmed up in the off season. He looks like he's ready to knock some heads. He's a funny guy too, seen him on NFL Network a couple times, always bringin jokes and talkin trash. I bet he's dope in the locker room.
Chrisbob74
I think Bettis will do well this year, especially with Duce Staley there to take the pressure off a bit. As for trading him, what Fred Jones said is right, which is why this deal will never happen.
Mr. S
man, Bettis has been with the Steelers for soo long, and at his rate, is likely for the HoF in a few years or sometime. I think he should just retire as a Steeler.
Cskin
It's hard to believe Bettis is one of the top 10 rushers in terms of yards gained in the NFL. He's done it so quietly. I like the guy.... a tough competitor and a high character guy that does alot for kids. As for the trade....in the words of George Bush Senior.... "Not gonna do it.... Not gonna happen... wouldn't be prudent".
