OT - Star Wars trailer

Maybe it'll carry me over till the 2nd Lord of the Rings release (The Two Towers).

I was mighty disappointed in Phantom Menace with it's cartoonish Jar-Jar and the spectacle of young Anakin yelling 'yipee'. Uninspired plot and, frankly, cheesy special effects. Of course I saw it several times.

For my money, LOTR has eclipsed anything Lucas is doing.

I agree with you about Lucas' current projects from what we've seen so far. But I don't think the first 3 are gonna be beaten anytime soon. Star Wars is an absolute classic. Two Towers is going to be pretty cool though! It's like torture waiting for Xmas!

Jar Jar Binks was the worst move in the history of cinema. Even the four year olds he was targeted at hated him.

I thought the trailer was cool but I'll reserve judgement til I see the film-- on opening day of course.

LOTR was a great film but if you really want to journey to another world read Tolkien's entire masterpiece...then read it again.

[ March 11, 2002, 10:38 AM: Message edited by: BallCoachSpurrier ]

I actually waited for it last night. Hey. What can I say? Waited 21/2 hrs at Springfield mall for the opening day show of Empire Strikes Back. (Wouldn't ya know. Power went out 15 mins before the ending. Cries of "the projectionist is a Jawa" rang out). Looks good to me. Can't wait.

I'm one of those simple, easy to please, hard to dissapoint Star Wars Fans. I still love to watch the part where the doors part and there is Darth Maul. Yea, I could even put up with Jar Jar. Gamers, the newest in the Dark Forces line will apparently let you kill the poor b*****d somehere along the line. Rumors have it.

You want true masterpiece and the king of the genre??? Tolkien pales in comparisaon to Robert Jordan. If you like to read fantasy, and have no problem with a long series (it's 10 books now and plans to go to at least 12) then read the Wheel of Time series. This guy is far and away the best that genre has ever seen. Tolkien is the grandfather and old master of the genre, Jordan is the virtuoso.

ot: It's interesting that in both the latest and the 1970's animated versions that the character Tom Bombadill and the weights that the crew runs into never make the movies. It's especially interesting because some key elemnts of the book came out of those scenes, particularly the enchanted weapons Merry, Pippin and Sam brought out of there. It's interesting to watch how the producers handled the changes the made. I think they did a pretty damn good job.

Park City I'm with you. While I was disappointed in Phantom Menace, I thought it was good flick, I certainly don't agree with BCS about it being the worst ever, but hey opinions are like a-holes right? I was there for opening day too, although I wasn't one of the many dorks that camped out and dressed up like Darth Maul. A kid doing that I can see, but I saw grown men pulling that crap. Sheesh talk about needing a life, it's a movie fer chrissakes! It's not like a concert where there is only 1 show...you can catch the flick the next day!

[ March 11, 2002, 10:53 AM: Message edited by: CounterTre ]

Robert Jordan is really not all that good. He's turned into the Anne Rice of fantasy, writing a lot of words and taking his books no where. The Wheel of Time started out very strongly, but, has essentially stagnated while Jordan has come to realize people will buy his books even when he writes 700 pages and the book goes no where, except we learn every woman tugs her hair a lot.

Jordan has commercialized himself and should have stayed with his plan to be done with the series in eight books rather than 13. That said, it's not a bad series. But, it is not close to Raymond Feist's original Riftwar saga. It is childish when compared to George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series. You want good fantasy, read Martin, and just don't get attached to anyone because by the end of Book 3, you may have a different cast .

I've read all the works by both Martin and Feist, tad Williams wrote some good stuff too as well as Stasheff. Brooks is a great story teller, although his attention to detail is lacking. Terry Goodkind is decent but is horrible at wrapping a book up...they just stop.

From my first post I would obviously highly disagree with you about Jordan. I find his attention to detail and extension of the series desirable and in some cases required. I also don't agree about his books going no where. Yes they are long but each has a point of progression and makes some conclusions for us. I do agree that it sucks sometimes the way things get drawn on just teasing us, but I also think that's part of the package...he keeps you coming back for more. He got too far into some of the subplots to wrap things up effectively in 8 books so an extension was inevitable. It would have been a cheap and stunted ending otherwise. My ONLY complaint with Jordan is having to wait for the next book. I feel like a junky looking for his next fix with his stuff.

Hey Art you want a great book to read that will be a complete departure from the rest of the genre (actually knowing how analytical you seem to be capable of this one's right up your alley)....go pick up The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon. Far and away the finest production from a fantasy author in terms of military aspects and the attention to detail. Very impressive.

[ March 11, 2002, 11:27 AM: Message edited by: CounterTre ]

The first 2 films are definitely classics, the third was rahter disappointing, and the last one just plain sucked. Muppets take Outer Space meets Starship Troopers.

You'd think Lucas would be happy with all the $$$ he's got and try and make a quality movie rather than spending his energy figuring out how to make a killing on selling toys based on movie figures.
He oughta hire a scriptwriter like kasdan the way he did on the 2nd one. Lucas is a great storyteller, but he can't write decent dialogue to save his life.

Why not make 10 louder, and then just make that the loudest?
These go up to 11.

Bufford, you can see it at starwars.com.

I'm with Park City. I'm easy to please. Sure Jar Jar was stupid, the boy couldn't act and Liam looked like he'd rather be doing just about anything else, but damn if I don't like to watch that movie anyway. The fight scenes are great. Special effects were great. Plot was, within the context of the entire storyline, pretty good.

I think too many people expected Episode 1 to be the Greatest Movie of All Time, and since is wasn't it therefore sucked. Oh well. Your loss. Episode 2 will probably suck then too.

I for one will be first in line to see it.

Actually, after seeing Jedi, I didn't expect too much, but I was still disappointed. I honestly thought it was awful. (I had great expectations when Empire came out, but I still ended up liking it more than the first.) Matrix was definitely the best Sci Fi movie to come out that year. I'm looking forward to its sequel far more than Episode II of Star Wars.

hey Henry have you got the DVD? If not it's wellw orth it for any Star Wars fan that liked it at all. Tons of deleted scenes and some good behind the scenes stuff. I think it added about 20 mins to the movie overall...pretty damn cool. I LOVE dvd's!

CounterTre, but of course.

I must admit I'm annoyed at old George for refusing to release the originals on DVD. I'm not sure what that's all about.

I thought the Matrix was a pretty good movie too. But that movie had some pretty huge flaws of it's own: Horrible acting. Weak Martial Arts. Huge, and I mean HUGE plot holes all over the place. Not to mention a very weak rationalization for butchering innocents who get in the way.

As an action movie, I liked it a lot. But I do have to chuckle anytime someone brings it up as an example of what Star Wars SHOULD have been.

To each his own, I suppose.

That DVD is cool. Um ,just a couple of personal thoughts on this Star Wars thing. The original movie was met with the same kind of criticism. I mean it is almost exactly the same. I kept a Washington Post article on the movie for years as a reminder to myself as to why I don't listen to critics, the paid ones, before watching a movie.
I was 15 when the original Star Wars came out. Nothing had come out, special effects wise, that was like it, except maybe 2001. I think those are 2 of the reasons I loved, love, and always will love it.
It appealed to that 15 year old because he wanted to be Luke Skywalker. It appealed to my other teenage friends because they wanted to be Han Solo, one friend wanted to be Darth Vader. I mean, wasn't there a great since of wonder and awe when you first saw that Star Destroyer moving, and moving and moving across the screen? Adjectives like "dec" and "ex", usually followed by "man" filled my art classroom the first month back at W.T.W.
It is this sense of wonder, childlike expectation, and teenage attitude I tapped into the "second" time I watched episode one. It was much more fun after that. These 3 newest episodes will never be the firt 3. They can't be. I don't expect them to be. Besides, I'm not 15. And they are not the first stories to be told or filmed about that place a long time ago, far far away. That's okay. I'll just look within and find that young lad again, sit back and enjoy them anyway.

I couldn't agree more!

I've wondered the same thing with much frustration about the original 3 on dvd. I'm sure it has to do with his plans to make money with releases in the future, but jeez I woulda bought the whole shebang by now as well. I'm sure many others would have too. I figure he's missing out on some serious cash. What gives?

There is a peculiar passion for science fiction. It's adherents, myself included, are a mighty critical lot.

I find that most of the sci-fi & fantasy stuff on bookshelves or in film is pretty lousy - but the cream that rises to the top. Sadly there just haven't been a lot of great sci-fi classics that have been translated well to film. 2001 - The first Star Wars - Alien - Blade Runner.

After all these years I still find myself drawn to the genre. I'll find time to sneak out of work to watch a matinee of LOTR or Phantom Menace.

Note to Counter Tre - I recently re-read the LOTR trilogy. There's no way that Tom Bombadil could reasonably be translated to film. All that goofy singing and capering about. I think they made a good call.

If Irvin Kershner and Lawrence Kasdan were directing and writing, respectively, Episode 2, then maybe I could get excited. But with George "I'm the guy who signed off on The Star Wars Christmas Special and Jar Jar Binks" Lucas scripting and helming and spineless yes-man Rick McCallum producing, I'll kindly remain apprehensive, thank you very much.

I grew up on the original trilogy and love it to death. And that makes it all the harder to watch Lucas -- whose filmmaking insticts seem to have been severely deadened by over a decade's worth of sedentary, wine-sipping domesticity in northern California -- piss the franchise's grand legacy away on drivel like The Phantom Menace, which was nothing more than a dull, bloated 2-and-a-half-hour commercial for Lucasfilm's new line of action figures. However, unlike with Episode 1, where I remained in my theater seat and stupidly hoped for the film to eventually get better, if Episode 2 insults my intelligence in a similar fashion, I will get up and walk out immediately.
