The Jay Gruden Curve (if there isn’t one, there should be)

For every good game, we get 2 bad ones.  Too much inconsistency under Gruden to keep him.  One of his faults is not holding players accountable for their errors and this being voiced by the players themselves, can add to the teams woes.   If we want to get to the playoffs consistently, a change needs to be made.  You get 0 points for being competitive and having losing records year after year. Bring in new life with the young talent we have now.  Let the drunks, and oft injured players go and stop wasting roster spots. Get some players who desire to excel and put in the hard work to succeed.  It's sad when a 4th string QB,  years removed from the game, comes in with a rookie line with only days of practice and whose few remaining vets are hobbled and performs better that the starter and his backup.  Something is terribly wrong with this staff after 5 years. The only superstar is Callahan the Line coach...he is a miracle worker.

Gruden almost coached his 4th string qb to a victory but he threw a bad pick. His game plan was solid.

He also choked when it mattered.  Being in an empty backfield on 3rd  and 3 when it is clearly 4 down territory is just plain stupid.  He gave the Titans a running start at their blitz adjustments and that put way more pressure on that 4th string Qb than was needed in that situation.   Jay has proven to be terrible in situational big spots and he was again tonight.

I think I agree. If this was Gruden's first year I'd be feeling really good at the way the team fought back to an almost. Unfortunately, this is year five and the last three seasons have had exactly the same script. Too many games thrown away where the team came on flat then a resurgence only to fall short. Once, Gruden's team managed to win the game they needed to win, but part of the reason they needed this win so badly is they choked or came up flat and unprepared in too many earlier games.

I do think we'd have been in the playoffs had Smith not gotten hurt, but I also think we'd be one and done which would tie Jay's best effort.

Yes! The fact that the D didn't have to honor or think about the run at all made it all that much easier for them to defend. Gruden chose to make the Redskins one dimensional. More, once the Titans called the time out it was to adjust and be ready for the no backfield play. Gruden should have known that and not come back with the same play now that the Titans had a full time out to be ready for it.

If you're a head coach who was hired based on your offensive knowledge but can't be trusted to call plays OR manage the clock ... why are you a head coach? I've never understood this argument.

I disagree with this.  You can be an offensive/defensive genius, and still have a strong OC/DC.  Look at Bellichick.  He’s not the figurehead of anything.  Yet he always has a DC even though he’s possibly the best defensive mind in the NFL.

Jay could hire an OC and just manage the team and it would help him tremendously.  Like when McVay was here in 2015/2016.

no …     the 2nd down pass was midrange  15-20 yd. down the left sideline that went OB/incomplete and the 3rd down pass was 10 yd right sideline pass to Reed that was incomplete...then the 65 yd FG.  Point being that the middle was the weakest coverage and the calls made were against their strength and schemes to defend sidelines to prevent clock stoppage. the greatest chance was to hit a 10 yard middle slant on 2nd down.  Was less risky than throwing into coverage which clearly didn't work. Gruden's concept was much riskier and lowest chance for completing and getting OB.  Highest possibility was to complete the middle field pass and spike it on 2nd down.  Anyway...we keep finding ways to blow a game consistently...just like today at Tenn.

Not even close man...

The 2nd down pass went to the RIGHT to Floyd and the 3rd down pass was deep down the LEFT to Doctson.

well, point is no pass to middle. memory remembers 2 sideline passes , one being around 15-20 yds eating up precious seconds into coverage.  Middle open and time to spike on 2nd down.   will look at the last few minutes again
