Mickalino
Thursday, November 20, 2003 Associated Press DENVER -- The Denver Broncos suspended Daryl Gardener for one game Thursday for conduct detrimental to the team, four months after the defensive tackle tore ligaments in his right wrist in an altercation outside a pancake house. The team would not say why Gardener was suspended nor would his agent, Neil Schwartz. He will miss Denver's game Sunday against Chicago. "He's upset, frustrated, disappointed," Schwartz said. "He obviously wants to play, he wants to play this Sunday and help the team. He wants to help the Broncos out, he wants to compete. He's hurt." Gardener was Denver's top defensive free agent signing in the offseason, a big player -- 6-foot-6, 295 pounds -- who was expected to plug the middle and get to the quarterback. It hasn't worked out that way so far. Gardener was arrested July 18 on suspicion of disorderly conduct for a late-night fight outside a pancake house. He underwent surgery for a dislocated wrist stemming from the fight and missed training camp. Gardener returned to practice Sept. 12, but lingering pain in his wrist kept him off the field the next four games. He saw limited action his first two games before moving into the starting lineup against Baltimore on Oct. 26. Gardener started again the following week against New England, but was relegated to a backup role against San Diego on Sunday. He has 15 tackles and no sacks in five games after signing a seven-year, $34.8 million deal with Denver.
bulldog
in general in the NFL under the cap, you don't want to make heavy bets on players with long injury histories and those with acute behavioral problems. Gardener, despite his talent, has both on the flip side the Skins have been burned by the Fiore and Upshaw signings. also players that can't stay on the field to contribute. Prosperity
Bring him back at the minimum and sign him for one year to give him an incentive to get better (hmmm sounds like last year...)
Ignatius J.
Uh, Bulldog.... Over at leat the past three games, upshaw has been a sonsitant and quality contributor on our defensive line. He's been a part of the solution not part of the problem. -DB
