Stricknine
Does anybody have any ideas as to who our Defensive coordinator is going to finally turn out to be? This whole thing is starting to scare me.

I realize that he was the D-coordinator of the Steel Curtain, but Woody Widenhofer? A Colts' DB coach? Please, for the love of God, No!!!

I don't know about you guys, but none of the names mentioned lately(if K Schott leaves, which I believe he will) inspire any confidence in me. If we are going to take some other team's defensive assistant to be our new DC can't we atleast take him from a team where the defense has actually performed well while his staff was running the show? The Dolphins' guy Bradley is the best I have heard so far.

I won't even get started on our GM thing. Vinny?
fansince62
bradley is actually with the jets. he apparently did great things with the buffalo secondary when there. he may be one of those assistants in waiting who have the right stuff to move to the next level. spurrier is interviewing him based on someone's recommendation. Om
I would like to think one of the reasons teams like the Redskins might be "taking their time" (a relative term, no?) on settling on a DC is that they're keeping their options open while there are still any number of highly qualified -- and hot -- candidates out there, actively coaching away at the highest levels.

Am I misremembering this, or didn't teams used to wait until after the season was over to decide on coaching changes?

I know the league is a year-around affair nowadays, and far more competitive in these parity-driven times, but it still seems amazing to me that coaching vacancies, both HC and coordinator levels, would by and large be filled prior to the end of the playoffs.

There are still four teams alive, arguably the best four in football, each replete with what you have to assume are pretty competent coordinators and position coaches. And yet, teams and fans alike almost appear in panic mode every year if they haven't nailed down a staff by mid-January.

Someone slap me and tell me I'm just getting old. Larry
Defense is starting to worry you? I wasn't that impressed with our defense last year. I do think they won some games for us (which was a big improvement over the past), but I didn't think we were done improving them.

I'm not worried about the D coordinator, so much as I'm worried about the people who want to trade our 1st pick (and some others) for a QB, and then use the 2nd pick for another. (And, probably, pencil in a WR with the 3rd, if we still have one).

I understand that our O was worse than our D last year, and should get top priority. But not to the complete exclusion of the D.
NavyDave
Isn't Willie Shaw on the Viking Staff?

I don't want some guy on our team that Spurrier beat by 73 points (Vanderbilt) as DC

We need to address both lines in the draft.

Right now we have our starting Tackles and Brandt at center under contract and I don't see a Russ Grimm type as O Line coach to work magic.

WE are undersized on the D Line save Big Daddy so teams like the cowpokes will continue to run at the side featuring K Lang and B Smith
Art
Shaw was demoted from secondary coach/assistant head coach to defensive coordinator/secondary coach in Minnesota as O'Leary has taken the assistant head coaching position. Shaw would be a guy that could be had for the "right" job title . Gamebreaker
Om...*slap*...you're getting old.

LOL!!!
bigchuck
Please not Willie Shaw! I think we can do better.
Stricknine
Om,

I would'nt say I am in panic mode. I am not even that worried about the time that it is taking for the hire. I am just worried about the names that are being mentioned.

Yeah '62, I remember he was with the Jets now...confused him with Dolphin DC Bates, who we were denied permission to talk to. Om
Didn't mean to imply that you personally were, Randy. I was just noting how the process of finding a coach or coordinator has accelerated to the point where the some of the candidates it seems might be among the most qualified, i.e., the ones coaching the top teams in the league that are still competing at this point, don't even get a sniff before most of the vacancies around the league are filled.

This may just be wishful thinking, but perhaps there are a couple of names on the Redskins' short list of potential DC's who are still working on game plans as we speak. I'm not suggesting anyone in particular, but if there were somebody, it would at least put a little bit different spin on why we suddenly seem to be treading water.

Hey, I might have just mongered a rumor. Cool
