SonnyandSam
:party::party::party::party::party::party::party: According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, today is the Redskins' birthday. The team was purchased July 9, 1932 by George Preston Marshall as the Boston Braves; became the Boston Redskins in 1933 (and played games in Fenway Park!); and then became the Washington Redskins in 1937. All HAIL!!! EDIT -- And here is some early film footage of the Redskins early years. http://www.redskins.com/media-gallery/videos/Redskins-Nation-Birth-of-the-Skins-7-5/0f035102-7ae5-4fa0-b5c9-052b3c1655ab

SonnyandSam
You mean, the team was given away for free haha. It wasn't free; Marshall and the other investors paid $1,500 to the NFL for the franchise. The Newark Tornadoes folded a couple years earlier and Marshall was encouraged by several other NFL owners to buy the franchise from the league. After being awarded an NFL franchise, he decided to place the team in Boston because he could not have a team in New York. So he called them the Boston Braves and played in the baseball park being used by the Boston Braves for one year before renaming the team and moving to Fenway Park. "The franchise didn't cost us a dime...just picked it up for the asking and the willingness to underwrite losses". The Encyclopedia goes on to say that the league owners voted the team into existence on July 10, 1932 at a league meeting in Atlantic City NJ (which I guess would make the Bday today!)
