First Round Mock Draft Competition

Going Commando

Recommended Posts

Greetings ESers,

Several of us in the scouting thread decided it would be fun to have a first round mock draft competition on Draftmas Eve. Well here we are, and it's time for something to take our minds off the unbearable final stretch before the draft begins. The rules of participation are simple:

1.) One entry per person that can be submitted and edited up until the draft starts tomorrow night at 7:30 PM eastern.

2.) All entries will be scored according to this system:

- A point will be awarded for mocking the correct player to the correct team (32 possible points). This means that you can get credit for your selections even in the event of unpredictable trades.

- A point will be awarded for correctly predicting a player to be taken in the first round (32 possible points). This is to reward you for correctly identifying first round caliber players.

- A point will be awarded for correctly predicting the draft slot a player will be taken at (32 possible points). By this I mean simply, if you predict Ndamukong Suh to go first overall to any team, and does in fact get taken first overall by any team, you will get a point. This rewards you for correctly ordering the draft board.

So to summarize, if you predict that Ndamukong Suh goes first overall to the Rams, but the Rams trade out of the pick with the Lions and Suh ends up going to them first overall, you will only receive two points for your prediction instead of three since you did not predict the proper team that took him, but did correctly predict his draft slot as well as his first round value.

3.) In the event of a tie, the win will go to the entry that had the highest average correct draft position. This rewards correctly predicting the picks for the later teams which will be more difficult to do.

OK, so with that said, we'll open up the thread for everyone to post their entries in. There is no prize on the line other than bragging rights. Again, entries will only count if submitted and finished before the draft starts at 7:30 Thursday night. We'll score them after the first round is over. If this works out and is fun, I'd be open to doing a second round mock competition for Friday too.

If anyone has any suggestions as to a revision in the rules, let me know because we're open to ideas to make this as fun and fair as possible.

EDIT: Updated the scoring system to add a new metric.

Ah I was about to post something similar in the ATN. And me and Who Del are having a 1st round mock comp. Loser buys the winner dinner (now that I write that, it sounds kind of gay. Oh well) I'm almost done with mine. I'll post it later on.

Don't you think someone should still get a point for predicting the correct slot a player is taken? If there is a trade that takes away the correct slot, correct team aspect.

Hmm. I think you might be right. It does seem like you should get some value for correctly ranking Suh ahead of say Dan Williams. Projecting Suh correctly to go first overall and Williams correctly to go, say tenth, implies that you correctly ordered your draft board at each position.

What's a good way of revising the point system to include some value for correctly predicting the right slot a player is taken at? Does a 1:1:1 ratio sound good to everyone? What I mean by that is you'll get one point for picking the right slot for a player in addition to one point for picking the right team and one point for correctly picking a first rounder.

I can think of no good reason to make one standard worth more points than the other. Probably the easiest points will come for predicting the right first rounders, but even that will be difficult after pick 20 or so.

OK, so unless someone has a good reason to change this system, I'm going to add that metric to the OP and keep the 1:1:1 ratio with a maximum of 96 points.

29. NYJ - Golden Tate, WR

30. Minnesota - Maurkice Pouncey, G/C

31. Indy - Rodger Saffold, OT

32. New Orleans - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB

First off, doing this mock made me realize just how damn deep this draft is. Damn shame we don't have **** for picks this year. And after Okung, Suh and Berry went right before them, it was damn near impossible for me to figure out what the hell the Chiefs might do. I figured they learned their lesson last year going for need over BPA at 3 (Tyson Jackson) so they'll go BPA this time around and that would be McCoy. Oh and Taylor Mays to Philly is probably not gonna happen but I've been talking **** to Who Del about how they're gonna take this workout warrior so I got it in my mock in case it does happen. God it would be so beatiful.

Actually, that was exactly what I was going to suggest. That way if you do correctly predict a trade you get an extra point over someone who just predicted the correct slot.

I am sticking with the Mock Draft I completed before the Mcnabb Trade:

Rams – Sam Bradford – They need a franchise QB, bottom line.

Lions – Gerald McCoy – He is a more versatile and a natural leader

Bucs – Ndamukong Suh – Defense is terrible , best available player

Skins – Russell Okung – They need a LT and aren’t 100 percent on Clausen. QB prospects next year are better

Chiefs – Eric Berry – they need offensive help, but there defense is TERRIBLE. This guy is a face for the franchise

Seahags- Bryan Bulaga – most people have Spiller here but Carrol is smart and will take the best tackle available

Browns – ( TRADE ) Bills move up and select Jimmy Clausen to be the new QB for the next 10 years.Holmgren stacks on picks.

Raiders – Bruce Campbell – ENORMOUS fast and over rated – Al Davis is all over it

Browns – Dez Bryant – surprise selection but best available player. They need offensive weapons

Jags – Joe Haden – Jags need DB’s in that division, both of there starters are mediocre in a mediocre defense

Denver – Rolando McClain – LB this team has been missing, QB of the D

Phins – Jason Pieere Paul – J Taylor and Porter are gone , Parcells loves D ends who can also play a little LB

49ers – CJ Spiller – They love frank gore but want a Carolina like attack. Now they THINK they have all the offensive weapons they need

Seahawks – Taylor Mays – Pete Carrol wants Earl Thomas but is “ too nice ‘ to pass on his former USC stud

Giants – Derrick Morgan – All the Dends signed last year didn’t work out. They get a young beast here.

Titans – Earl Thomas – Earl drops and the Titans are all over it. Now they have 2 former Texas safeties in the backfield

49ers- Dan Williams – Improving the front line of the defensive front.

Steelers – Trent Williams – offensive tackle who was projected a top 10 pick that slid. Steelers luck out and run to the podium

Falcons – Sean Wetherspoon – aging LB’s on that squad, they MUST upgrade

Texans – Ryan Matthews – Texans need a complementary back for Steve Slaton. This guy is the perfect fit

Bengals – Jermaine Greshamn – Bengals need a TE in the worst way. The best TE is available and they take him

Patriots – Sergio Kindle – Patriots grab and awesome DE / OLB who will do damage with OJ mayo

Green Bay – Anthony Davis – Another tackle slides and Aarong Rogers spend A LOT of time on his back last year

Eagles – Everson Griffin – Eagles love taking over rated D ends .. this is no different

Ravens – Terrance Cody – BEAST nose tackle who fits the aggressive style of the Ravens D

Cardinals – Jared Odrick – Cards better get some defensive help, they will struggle in the transition year.

Cowboys – Golden Tate – Cowboys are not satisfied with Roy Williams, his days are numbered and they want another WR weapon

Chargers – Devin Mcourty – best DB left on the board. This team must upgrade there DB’s before selecting the next LT

Jets – ( TRADE ) Jets send there first round pick to Denver for Brandon Marshall. Broncos select DE Brandon Graham

Minnesota – Kyle Wilson – great DB who the Vikings must upgrade

Colts – Maurkice Pouncey – Indy always goes offense, so they will draft the best center who will take Jeff Saturdays place eventually, and play guard for now

Saints – Brian Price , perfect DT who fits the needs
