I'm posting this story for a couple reasons. First, locally and recently around other parts of the country we have seen false allegations of rape, as discussed on this board. We have discussed interrogation tactics quite a bit, we have numerous prior/current military folks on here, and I attended this survival school while in the Air Force. I went through the POW phase which includes interrogation. I can say it was the toughest things I've ever been through. They did a lot of crazy **** to us, but never to the point of sexual assault.

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. - A Spokane man has been charged with raping a woman at Fairchild Air Force Base's survival school.

Michael Fassbender, 32, was charged Wednesday with first degree rape and bond was set at $20,000. The rape allegedly occurred Tuesday inside an interrogation room at the Survival Training Center at Fairchild.

Court documents allege Fassbender squeezed the victim's throat until she was unconscious.

Doesn't say that he's military so hopefully if there is such a thing as a silver lining in a situation like this, lets hope it was a contractor.

I honestly think people who betray the trust of these trainee's should be punished more severely than the "average" rapist. We as a military institution put so much trust and training into assuring these things don't happen. Inexcusable.

I wondered that too Z. However, when I attended we only had other Airmen working as the "bad guys"- I am positive we only had military people working the survival school. I'll keep an eye on the story and see what other info comes out.

We finally have an answer...the guy is a civilian contracted instructor for the survival school. Not sure when they started using civilian isntructors, we never had one.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County prosecutors have filed additional rape charges against a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in an interrogation room at Fairchild Air Force Base.

The Spokesman-Review reports 32-year-old Michael W. Fassbender is a civilian contract instructor at Fairchild's survival school.

He's accused of taking a woman there in October on a date to show her torture devices. His lawyer says Fassbender denies the allegations.

Fassbender was arrested Oct. 20 on one rape charge and bailed out of jail the next day. On Thursday prosecutors amended charges to three counts of rape and one count of assault.

Court documents says Fassbender choked the woman into unconsciousness during the assaults.

I've been through the AF Survival School there as well and I will never forget my experiences in the POW camp. It sure does scare the **** out of you if these instructors don't know the line that cannot be crossed.

can you describe some of the mental trials they put ya through?

Wait, so he brought a date there to rape her?

I assume this means he didn't rape a trainee. Still needs to be prosecuted, but it is different than violating the trainee/trainer trust as part of the whole thing.

it was a trainee- and during off time brought her to the room where he raped her.

I'm not allowed -- but rest assured anyone who goes through the POW camp views life and freedom a little bit differently.

You and I both- when were you there? I had the pleasure of being there first part of March 95. Snow up to our knees most of the "camping" part.

in other words, a cheesy movie like G.I.Jane doesn't come close to showing what happens?

Well, I sure didn't get into the kind of fight she did..but I'd say somethings were pretty similar.

The day you get out and look at the American flag, even knowing its just training...the most wow experience I've ever had in my life.

I was there in September/October of 1988. I had fantastic weather. My wife at the time went through in Jan/Feb of 1989 and got KILLED with snow. And you are correct about the flag moment. I still tear up when I recall the feelings 50 grow men (and a few women) had at that moment.

I wonder if she was the only one? If he was working at that school... plus the numerous allegations of rape and sexual abuse within the military, the question begs to be asked.

Also, military contractors is a bad idea. The government should do what the government should do. Having a bunch of loons outside of the control of government serving with and in essence as military has lead to nothing but insane profiteering, death, crime, and harm to the image of the US.

The problem is this:

All of our good interrogators are kind of tied up right now in real-world situations. I guess we ran out of military specialists.

"All"? Even the ones that are currently "tied up" are often contractors. Shortfalls should be met with making more, not by hiring people that a company wanting a juicy contract tell you are just great!

yeah, I would imagine with all that is going on right now, its hard to find someone qualified for the job. I knew guys that couldn't get into Special ops, so they would become a survival instructor for a few years, and then try again.

I wanted to re-enlist a few years ago and the main job open for prior service- survival school instructors. I was going to do it, but I was too old by 6 months to re-enlist in the AF. The Army takes us old folks I guess, but I passed on that.
