Michael Green May Be Added at Safety

With the Redskins short on safeties with Reed Doughty on the injured reserve list and Justin Hamilton released from what was a shallow group to start with, Michael Green is a name that has come up inside the building, and it is likely he could be signed today, according to sources.

Right now the Skins have LaRon Landry and rookie starter Chris Horton is nursing an ankle injury. Rookie Kareem Moore missed almost all of the offseason work and training camp because of knee problems, and is pretty far behind. He also heard about it from defensive coordinator Greg Blache after failing to blitz on that 43-yard pass late in the loss to the Rams. And that's it. Corner Shawn Springs can, and very well may, play more free safety in coming weeks, but that's still not much depth.

Green, 31, played under Blache in Chicago. He was with the Bears from 2000-2005, and spent the past two season with Seattle, where Jim Zorn was QB coach. I wouldn't be surprised if the Skins added another safety at some point. Vernon Fox, who was with them the past few years, got picked up by Denver. Omar Stoutmire knows the system well and could still be available down the road if need be. He has slowed in recent years, but was brought back in a pinch in years back.

With Green, Shaun Alexander and a punter (either Josh Miller or Ryan Plackemeier) all very likely to be signed, the Skins would clear roster space by parting with Hamilton and punter Durant Brooks (whether to IR or a release or an injury settlement) and also placing Doughty on IR.

All of this will likely be announced around 4 pm.

Don't be blind people. He was with Blache in Chicago for a long time.

yeah, even though he was most recently with the seahawks, i definitely think of him from his time with the bears. there was one season, i think in 2004, when he made huge interceptions in back to back games to secure the win, or something like that.

i know that was 4 years ago, and he's on the wrong side of 30, but he's a depth signing and it makes a lot of sense.

Plackemeir was pretty solid, Alexander should be solid splitting carries with Portis and Green would be a solid depth safety move.

BTW what the F happened to Reed? I didn't think his injury was that serious?

He has had problem with a nerve in his back for the past 5 weeks. I think that's what Zorn said in one of his Pressers.

Oh come on man like 31 is just ancient.

This is like G. Williams dragging PP around with him everywhere. So is this what will happen after every loss? Shed the roster of guys and bring in washed up Seahawk bums???? Heck if we are cutting a promising rookie like Brooks for performance issues why are Davis and Kelly still here? Let's cut Devin Thomas and bring in Largent!

Hard to understand this attitude. Davis, Kelly and Thomas are not REQUIRED TO BE FIELDED. Thankfully. We have starters who perform at those positions while the team evaluates and develops the rooks potential. We get their feet wet when WE want. The PUNTER HAS TO START. THERE IS NO BACKUP PUNTER! If he can't perform to at least an acceptable level, he has to be replaced or you will give away more games because of it. This is really simple, why do so many here have trouble understanding it?

Anyone complaining about this needs to take a deep breath. Alexander is brought in to replace betts while he's hurt (I'd be willing to bet that once betts is back, Alexander is cut or put on the practice squad), green is into provide depth at safety now that reed is out, and the punter is brought in because brooks sucks. There was nothing promising about him.

this isn't steve spurrier bringing in old florida players. If not these guys, than who?

All you have to do is read some of the dumb comments people write here on Extremeskins to understand why we have dumb fans cheering while the offense is at work on the field.

Does anyone actually think before they start typing on the keyboard? Has everyone's brain turned to mush?

Doughty is going on IR....so we need a safety. Betts is hurt for a few weeks so we need a 2nd/3rd running back like Alexander who had great talent and knows the Zorn offense. Brooks pretty much laid an egg on the playing field....so yes....we needed a punter.

Any decent players are already on another team's roster so all we have to choose from is some other team's trash. That's REALITY folks. You sign guys who are available. And you sign guys who are a known quantity rather than risk losing a game on an unknown. You do not have time to develop young players when you need a safety, a RB, and a punter to step in and contribute right away.

If Hamilton was really so good, don't you think they would have kept him instead of signing Green? Maybe testing a now healthy and fresh legged Alexander may pay off instead of going with a kid who ran against a bunch of players during pre-season who no longer are on an NFL roster?

Please folks...let's think before posting crap.

A voice of reason.

And in doing so, we're right back in the same dilemma year after year. We have a GM who supposedly keeps track of every player in the NFL. Why can't he find a prospect player, for example, stashed away on another team's practice squad? This idiotic "Win Now" mentality has been killing us ever since Danny took over the franchise. You bring in the young guys, and you have a great coaches/assistants staff develop them to fit your system. How freakin' hard to understand is that?
