This from Pro Football.com:

PANTHERS FEAR THEY OVERPAID FOR DAVIS

By giving a contract to running back Stephen Davis that, with incentives, could be worth as much as $36 million over five years, a league source tells us that the Carolina Panthers fear they have paid too much for the veteran tailback who was unceremoniously dumped by the Redskins.

According to the source, however, the lingering concerns regarding the long-term status of DeShaun Foster and the presence of significant question marks at the quarterback position forced the Panthers to secure a chain-moving running back who, hopefully, will take pressure off of the passing game.

The Panthers signed inexperienced quarterback Jake Delhomme to a two-year deal, and they hope to re-sign Rodney Peete. The team previously said that, if Peete returns, there will be an open competition for the starting job.

Davis has rushed for 5790 yards in eight NFL seasons. He broke out in 1999 with 1405 yards and 17 touchdowns. The next year, he had 1318 yards and 11 scores. In 2001, Davis racked up 1432 yards and 5 touchdowns.

In 2002, injuries limited Davis to only 12 games, and Ball Coach's pass-happy approach limited Davis's touches, leaving him with only 820 yards, with 7 scores.

Damn. I read an article yesterday talking about Davis's bonus marks, now I cant find it to post it.

What it said was half of the bonuses are HUGE long shots like making the superbowl, Catching more passes than he ever made before, and running for more yards than he ever has. In short. No. They did not pay too much if they are worried about his bonus pay.

That is absurd. How some sports writers get jobs is beyond me because 90% of those guys have no clue what the word 'homework' means.

Davis will never reach his incentives. He has rush for 1500 yards to reach the largest incentive - he's never done that in his life although he's come close. Another is that he has to catch 40 passes, something else he's never done. Also be in the top 3 rushers in the NFL. He's done that, but with a lot of talented young backs like LT and Portis emerging it is very unlikely that he will repeat as a top 3 rusher.

The panthers got themselves a nice a good, solid back for a reasonable price. And hey, the unmet incentives will add to their cap space next year.
