Dan Shannoff who writes for ESPN Page 2, the Daily Quickie wrote:

"Congratulations to Jimmy Smith on his retirement. He is this generation's Art Monk. Very Good, but not Hall of Fame Worthy"

Looks like we have another Peter "fat" King and Len "pasta" belly on our hands.

Jimmy Smith has fewer receptions, yards and TDs than Monk. And Smith played is a much more pass-freindly era. Smith never broke any league records, and he has no rings.

With all due respect to Smith, he's no Art Monk.

Shannof is an idiot. He was the one calling the Patriots a dynasty after they won their second Super Bowl (with a non-playoff year sandwiched in between!) and calling them the greatest team ever after they on their third.

He doesn't know a football from a foosball.

Jimmy Smith retiring should actually be a huge boon to Art Monk's candidacy. Not only does it have a lot of people talking about Monk, but Smith could have passed Art on the all-time receptions list this season or next.

Now, the only person that will pass Monk in the next year is Marvin Harrison, so when Art is up for the Hall of Fame this year, he will be the #6 receiver of all-time (ahead of everyone else in the Hall) It's possible that Keenan McCardell or Isaac Bruce will pass Monk in 2007, but they are both towards the end of their careers, and they could very easily either slow down or retire like Jimmy Smith.

Peter King once predicted that a dozen receivers would reach 900 catches before 2010, but now it looks like that number will be more like 6 or 7.

The Jimmy smith news was discussed on the mike & mike show via espn radio this morning and they basically put smith in the same bracket with monk. That's an insult and somehow I just don't get why Monk is not taken seriously. The man contributed tremendously on 3 superbowl winning teams - with 3 different QB's. Monk played 99% of his career for a coach who emphasized running more than passing and still but up big numbers. Monk played in numerous big games and was our obvious go-to-guy on third downs yet not many could stop him. He was not flashy and was quiet. That is what he is paying for.

Everyone knows what Monk's stats are. Not even going to tire myself out typing. it all comes down to the fact that they waited too long to put him in and now they are trying to compare his stats with the stats of players today. 100 catches was considered an anomoly. nowadays if you don't catch 100 passes, they think something's wrong with you. Can't compare the eras.
