Art Monk Fan
They had a group of Katrina survivors on NPR last night and asked them what they've learned. The first thing they said? "We learned that you need to take care of yourself in an emergency and use your own resources to get to safety." Imagine that: you're your own first line of defense -- who would have EVER thought of that?
EersSkins05
lol- Well, I suppose this is relevant if the levees of New Orleans burst as often as blizzards occur in North Dakota and Montana... Fun analogy though. Almost works. Almost.

You are comparing an area where there is pratically no one there to a city surrounded by water with millions of people (most of them poor)...yeah that analogy really works. hokie4redskins
Point is, nobody in NO fortified the levies, even with plenty of notice. That is a state and local issue. Point is, nobody in NO evacuated like they were supposed to. Point is, people need to be prepared to take care of their own for at least 72 hours. People disregard these facts so they can point fingers. It was funny hearing Nagin blame everybody but himself.

Could the people in NO prepared more? Yeah. Is the blow they were dealt worlds worse than the snowstorm? Yeah. Apples and oranges. Not to mention the thinly veiled racial overtones. That is all well and good and you are right people should be prepared themselves...but the fact is that EVERYONE is NO doesn't make enough money to just pick up and go...most of the people who support the city working at the hotels and casinos and sweeping the streets were poor and didn't have a means to go...if it was that easy, then no one would have died. Dude, please tell me you're kidding. If a hurricane (or anything for that matter) was threatening to kill you in 4 or 5 days, you're saying you'd just sit there and await your fate simply because you don't have a car? Pathetic. And yeah, I understand the email is not quite the same thing nor am I condoning any racial undertones, but people are still discrediting the email by redirecting blame at Bush in subtle or not-so-subtle ways. It's over people. We're talking about a devastating act of Mother Nature here. More often than not, no matter how you prepare, prevent, or mitigate, Mother Nature wins. Get it? Actually, it was a hurricane(and Bush didn't create said hurricaine). I believe the point is that rich or poor, car or no car, there was plenty of warning to get the hell out of a city that sits below sea level and has been pummeled by hurricaines before. If your house is on fire, what do you do? You get out. You may not have started the fire, but you don't stay in the house.... People had time to evacuate. Whether they did or not was up to them and/or the fault of local and state officials for not getting the people out in time.

It was the hurricane? (psst... yes, i know. i was being sarcastic). My point is that - yes, they could have done more; but even if they did get out of the city, their lives are still ruined. Even if you take away the death tolls this was still a devasting storm of epic proportions. Unfortunately not enough people left, but that doesn't mean they deserved what happened to them.
