A Quarterback Story- About Me, Related to the Brunell-Campbell Situation

It was 10th grade. I remember it pretty clearly actually. Our team had finished about 2-9, or something of that nature. Our Quarterback play was terrible, I was at every game, and the QB would continuously rocket the ball out of bounds at a whopping 3 miles per hour. (Brunell for the rest of this story) "Brunell" wasn't any good, he was a Senior, and he was only starting because no one could beat him....

I went into that season as 4th on the Depth Chart, behind 2 other QB's that had worlds more talent than I could ever dream of having. The first year, I sat on the bench, and I watched practice most of the time. I couldn't really play, since they only had time for 3 QB drills. When I did get in, it was to throw a fade route to a no-name reciever. "Brunell" didn't have a cannon for an arm, but his decision making was great. He could read the plays pretty well, and dissect a defense. Unfortunatly, our defense was SO aggresive, that we had to win shootouts, and with our Wideouts, that wasn't possible.

Number 46#, and Number 33#, both of them were lackluster wideouts, without the ability to catch, or get yards after a rare one. Anyways, that first year we got demolished by several teams, all in pretty high scoring fashion. "Brunell" didn't have flashy stats, but that was expected. The next year, as 2-A-Days started, something devastating happened. "Brunell" got hit in his leg, and twisted and broke his ankle, putting him out for the rest of the season. The whole school, as I can recall, was pretty devastated over this loss. But alot of students felt that "Brunell" was past his prime (which was his freshman season, in which he threw 24 TD's and only 5 Picks). So the next Quarterback stepped in, and that ment I got to finally practice. So as I practiced, the coach noticed that I was coming along slowly, but I was coming along well. The other QB's in front of me had measurments though, both about 6'+, closer to 200 than to 100.

I entered the team as pretty much a water boy, at 155 soaking wet, no coach had the faith in me to go through an 11 game season, let alone lead any kind of team to any kind of victory. I was also only 5'11, but I got a fair shot to beat out "Brunell's" Backups. I lost that battle pretty badly, but I was the youngest, which means I had to most energy, stamina, or whatever it is. Anyhow, the season started, and the FIRST game, the 2nd String Quarterback is knocked out of the game, and for the rest season with somekind of head injury. So now I'M 2nd...which sounds weird considering where I started.

I was pretty much a rookie, raw to the fundmentals of football (Much like Campbell), but I had sat that entire year, so I knew and I grasped the offense. So we continue along, and we're about 2-1, or something, already winning more games than we did last year, but then, the 3rd string guy goes down, and wallah, there I am at starting Quarterback for my team.

At first, it was kindof hard for my big athletic teammates to accept a little 5'11, 155 pound Quarterback, but I grew on my teammates pretty quickly. As the season progressed, I gaine more confidence in my arm, which was previously considered weak. On the first play of the 4th game, I rememeber ( my favorite memory) I launched about a 45 yard bomb to a wide open reciever. It was something about me that made the other players step up, and do what they had to do to win.

Our running system was a power one, so our back (similar to Portis) was a key. He set up play action for me, and I was able to complete passes deep. The teamwork was unbelievable.

After all was said and done, I came to a point were we were 5-5, with one game left determining our playoff contention. All the QBs supported and gave me advice, and even though QB #3 came back, I was still in as starter. So this last game begins, and you swear this was like the Superbowl or something for High School, with people packing the left stands, the right stands...it was crazy. The noise level was nuts for the amount of people. We were away, obviously. Anyways, I got into the game, and I was playing pretty decent. I belive I had about 100 some yards, and a touchdown.

They were leading in the fourth, it was a defensive game, and we needed a touchdown to score, and advance to the playoffs.

I'll never forget it...I dropped back, normal like always, and it seemed like time just slowed down...I could see and open man...and open man...then WHAP! I was just smacked. My face hit the turf at about 100 miles per hour, and then I felt something, like a jolting pain, jus ascending up my leg. When I tried to yell for help, i couldn't because I discovered my JAW was broken...the paramedics escorted me off the field, and with 2 minutes to go, the 3rd guy came in....i didnt get to see it, obviously, but he was picked off and it was returned for a TD, and it lost us the game. I remember in the hospital, all people did was send me "Sorrys" and "Get Wells".

Needless to say, it was the funnest time of my life, actually starting for the team. I hope Campbell can beat Brunell out, and lead us to the playoffs (or almost ;)). HTTR!

Interesting tale. Sorry, however, I don't think that Gibbs shares your sentiment. Our new OC-Assistant Head Coach will tell you that he believes very deeply in experienced quarterbacks like Brunell and Trent Green. He knows that we have the weaponry in place to win a Super Bowl next year. Our defense is at the top of its game, and with Saunders, our offense, with a few small changes like a decent #2 possession receiver and an excellent playcaller, will work wonders.

Why do you want to start the rebuilding process all over again with 2nd year QB who will take at least a year to be able to fit into the system, has had numerous problems adapting to the NFL already and has NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER to bring us to a Super Bowl, probably not even the playoffs - when you have a QB who, though he was sometimes inconsistent, nearly took us to the NFC Championship in only his second year on the team.

We lost Randy Thomas, the Seahawks assigned a safety to Portis and double-covered Moss when they could (our only real receivers) and they stacked the box against Portis. If we had one other receiver who had a lick of talent and had Thomas blocking for Portis we would have killed them in both the running and passing game. We had a team very, very comparable to the Panthers, and look at what the Seahags did to their QB and offense vs. ours. Brunell did do a tad bit better than Delhomme when both of our running games were shut down, didn't he?

In retrospect, your "analogous" story was pretty dumb. I'd rather start Ramsey over Campbell right now. Did you see any of training camp last year? Did you watch any clips of practice this year? Campbell isn't ready to start in the NFL - he'd end up being a Brooks Bollinger right now, not a Carson Palmer. He needs to sit out another year, at least until Brunell is injured if that happens to happen.

Brunell, Portis, and Moss led us to the playoffs when everyone had written them off at the beginning of the year. And I don't care what you have to say, if not for Brunell, Moss wouldn't have done much better than Toeverneus Coles.

Brunell can still lead us to a Super Bowl. I don't care whether you believe that or not...to me the there are only two important things:

I believe in Brunell.

Joe Gibbs believes in Brunell.

Enough said. Hail.

That's is about as silly as saying Brunell gives us no chance to win the superbowl. Sorry, but every time the team hits the field, it has a chance to win.

I love hearing high school stories. I remember I was going into my senior season as starting quarterback and was getting a lot of attention from college scouts and a week before practice starts, I get in a boating accident, and next thing i know im in a hospital and being told i can't do physical sports for a year.

How lame is it to write a story about comparing your story to an NFL player? Very lame.. especially when you write about how you made players around you better. Way to toot your own horn. You should just sit down and write a book about how great you are. Then you could read that same book over and over again, because nobody else would give a crap.

Nobody ever wants to hear anybody say how great they are.
