Golgo-13
I remember back in the '99 season when Jevon Kearse aka The Freak won the rookie of the year award. He deserved it as he had one hell of a year that year. Only one vote went to another rookie, and that was our beloved Champ Bailey. Now, with several years in perspective, who would you guys have rather had of the two? The ROY winner Jevon Kearse, or the shut-down corner Champ Bailey? @DCGoldPants
I'll take Champ because he has more Potential. WR, PR, KR, CB
laurent
Corner in my oppinion is one of those positions where it's much harder to find top flight players then it is for defensive line men. Three years later I would still pick Champ over Kearse.
Posse81
What has Kearse really done since his rookie year? Champ is the corner in the game and hes about to develop in to a triple-threat...no question I'd go with #24. One of the only good draft day moves Casserly made around here. Novato
Mr. Roland Bailey any day of the week and double on Sundays come gametime.:notworthy
Zen-like Todd
I don't even think its close. You can bulldoze Kearse in the run-game, and he hasnt really ever come close to repeating his rookie year performance. I mean seriously... a one dimensional passrusher (ala Simeon Rice), or an NFL best shutdown corner?
Romo
Jevon has fallen off the face of the planet. I know he is still on of the better DEs in the game but Champ is one of the BEST if not the BEST CBs in the game.
bulldog
cover corners are next to left tackles and quarterbacks on the rare find list. Kearse had one monster season but has not matured and shown he is ready to become an everydown consistent performer. There is so much more to DL play than just sacks. But that is all people look at for post-season awards.
Riggo-toni
How about a real poll about what our choices were for that draft. We had another 1st rounder which we traded (along w/ a 2nd and a 3rd) to Minn for Brad Johnson: Now, whom would you rather have had: Jevon Kearse Duante Culpepper Brad Johnson
Zen-like Todd
None of them are particularly attractive to me... who else was still available at that point? Given the current situation, I dont see Daunte as a Fun 'n Gun kinda guy.

Golgo-13
That would be a good poll Riggo. Maybe we should post it.
Hoosierskin
Champ Bailey is the pick here and it is obvious he should have been the pick over Kearse, even when Kearse was having his "freak-like" year. Everybody loves statistics, but this is another example of how they are taken too far. Champ did all the little things his rookie year that did not show up on paper, but since the "freak" had more media coverage and stats to boot he won the award. Well, the media is wrong again...Kearse and Champ are not even on the same playing field now...it is Champ by a landslide. Do not believe everything you read in your Sports Illustrated or sports pages. Do not believe the hype. Believe in Champ! Champ should have made the cover of SI...Kearse is now suffering from the SI Jinx..so I am glad Champ was overlooked.
SkinsLegacy44
3 years later, Champ is one of the most dominant players at his position. Kearse had a good rookie season but hasn't progressed as much. His talent has leveled off. Now Champ is another story. He gets better & better each year. I really hope he gets to return some punts, I would love to see him in Hawaii as a PR & CB.

Golgo-13
Well looks like it was Champ by a very wide margin. I actually clicked on Jevon by mistake, so it was actually only one vote for him. Looks like we got the better end of the deal on this one.
NavyDave
Ok what 2 watt lightbulbs voted for kearse? This is a no brainer. Sorry about the slam dude.
OrangeSkin
Out of those 2? Champ, no doubt. But out of that draft class, I'd rather have Donovan McNabb.
Carlito Sway
You can scheme around a DE; but to avoid the Champ, you have to concede that your #1 receiver will be running for no reason the entire game. I love Kearse, and it's no blowout between these two, but Champ is the steadier presence and bigger contributor to what he allows the D to accomplish. True, but he went at #2, and we didn't pick until #5 (Champ went #7 after we traded down and then up with Ricky Williams)
Riggo-toni
If you wanna feel even better about the whole affair, just remember Chicago let us swap w/ them and used the #1 we sent them for Cade McNown
Gamebreaker
You know want to know what's funny... ...Champ Bailey will be shutting down whoever the Titans send his way this season, while.... ....Jevon Kearse is dreading having to face Cris Samuels for a whole game. HA!
