I thought Chris Jones was the best defensive lineman on the field tonight. Dude is gonna get PAID.

He can like the talent while still believing we are lacking a true game wrecker on defense, which is a very reasonable assumption to make based on his statements thus far. You don't give up a chance to draft a potential game wrecker in order to pick multiple less talented players unless you're planning a roster overhaul.

I suspect a significant part of the reason Rivera and JDR took this job was to build a defense with Young as its cornerstone, similar to what they’ve collectively had with Von Miller, Luke Kuechly, Khalil Mack, Julius Peppers, Calais Campbell etc. throughout their coaching careers. They know the importance of a true game wrecker on defense. I’ve lost count of how many times Rivera’s said he really likes this roster’s young talent. Or how many times people outside of the organization have said the defensive talent is being misused. I don’t think he sees as many holes on this roster as some fans do. At least not enough to pass on Young in the name of filling holes. We’re not trading back from #2.

It's weird that people don't see EDGE as a need. I found this on another forum. These are the totals pressures in 2019 for each defender per SIS. It's pretty damn sad how far down the list our first edge rusher is. Though hopefully this clears up my intentions for anyone else that may respond to my post.

When did I ever say they were generational? Maybe I missed something, but why are people assuming that about my post? I was just ranking the EDGE prospects drafted in the top 10 over the past couple decades.

I agree to an extent. Though I would note that most guys drafted in the top half of the 1st round are drafted there for their high floors. Naturally, some players drafted later in the draft will have higher ceilings with lower floors, and sometimes they hit those ceilings. But by and large, you want to minimize your risk of drafting a bust with an upper 1st round prospect, so it's not a surprise that guys like Chris Long, the Bosas, Chubb, and Ferrell were drafted so high. Regardless, most elite pass rushers over the last decade have been 1st round picks. Luckily for us, Young is perceived to have both a high floor and a high ceiling. He could still bust, but I think the chances are slim outside of injury.

Chase is also younger than Donald was, which should factor in. Donald dominated at the Senior Bowl, and that should have been solidified him as a top 10 pick at the very least, but NFL GM's are a stubborn lot.

Yeah, I agree. If we’re talking about general consensus EDGE grades as prospects (for players picked in the top 10) I’d have it: 1. Julius Peppers 2. Chase Young 3. Von Miller (there were questions about his size and run defense) 4. Myles Garrett 5. Jadaveon Clowney 6. Chris Long 7. Nick Bosa 8. Joey Bosa 9. Khalil Mack 10. Ezekiel Ansah 11. Josh Allen 12. Bradley Chubb 13. Dante Fowler 14. Solomon Thomas 15. Clelin Ferrell I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Quentin Nelson plays in between Ryan Kelly and Anthony Castonzo. Both are former 1st round picks who are graded near the top of their respective positions per PFF. There is definitely something to be said for playing next to other top tier players on the OL.

I think you’re right when it comes to Football Outsiders Adjusted Games Lost, but this must be different from that: Yeah, other than Amari Cooper, who went 4th overall, I’d easily take Scherff over any of the other guys in the top 10 of that 2015 draft.

Reminds me of this video from Kollman. Would be nice to see more "layering" concepts from our front 7, especially with all the mobile QBs in our division.
