  1. 3 months later and I'm pretty happy with my gut reaction. Couple updates: Williams - Not really an update. Same as my initial take: if you are sitting with a chance to draft him you need to be absolutely 100% certain you can get him to work within your offense while still giving him the flexibility to be creative and make plays. If he can do that he will be one of the best QBs in the NFL. The talent is enough that you cannot pass on him though. Maye- footwork needs to be improved. This should be coachable. He has a chance to be a top 10 QB, maybe top 5. Daniels - I like Daniels a lot more as a passer now after I've had some more time to watch him. His body type and propensity to take huge hits is a big knock for me. Massive boom/bust risk. McCarthy- I still think of him as a more athletic Kirk Cousins. I think he'll be really good. Day 1 starter would not be doing him any favors though. If I were considering drafting him, I would prefer the option of having him sit initially, just to get accustomed to the offense being throwing him into the fire given how little he was asked to carry the offense in college. I think all four QBs go in the top 5. Any of these guys could have been a #1 overall pick in a different year.
  2. I suspect for an onside kick they'll just need to opt in for it much like teams now have to opt to go for 2. Kills the surprise/fake offside kick but that's it. I predict we will see more kickoffs returned for TDs this year. And then by mid season kickers will resume kicking it through the endzone, resulting in starting field position being effectively the 30 full time now.
  3. That year's boringness was overshadowed for me bc I am a Virginia fan
  4. This quickly turned into the least interesting NCAA Tournament I can remember. Out of the remaining 16 teams, there are only three that are 5 seeds or worse. One was the national runner up last year and the other two are ACC teams.
  5. The human body isn't made to throw a ball 100mph. Guys who make a living on that kind of velocity will eventually break. The few that don't end up in the HOF.
  6. Passan would be my recommendation
  7. In a quarterback loaded draft class, with a Bears that already has at least a mid-tier starter quality QB on a rookie deal, Bears would be silly to not seriously explore trading down. They could probably land a 2nd and change, maybe late 1st for Fields. They could also move out of #1 and add a future 1st just for dropping one or two spots, and still draft a top QB. Heck if they decided they liked Fields more than Maye/Daniels/McCarthy, they could trade down from 1 to 2, then again from 2 to wherever, getting the QB premium return for both trades. They're absolutely in the drivers seat and imo would have to REALLY love Williams a ton more than the rest of the class to take him. Which isn't to say they won't. But it can't be a close evaluation between QB1 and QB2 for them.
  8. I still like the idea of sticking it in the quarry in Herndon off 28. Opens up some really interesting stadium concepts like leaving one side of it a solid stone wall. Imagine how unique and loud that would be. (I'm just making this up btw. no idea how deep the thing is or what the walls would look like)
  9. The risk would be how far they can trade down and still land him, if that is indeed the intention. Once you get to about pick 5, it opens the door for a ton of teams in the 10-20 range to be able to trade up. So even if you feel you can still land him based on the draft order, that might not necessarily be the order as the draft plays out.
  10. I’ve been saying… If I felt like we could execute a trade down and still get him between 6-10 that might be my preferred path. But a trade down followed by the Giants taking him at 5 (or trading the pick for someone else to take him) would absolutely ruin that plan.
  11. One benefit to hiring Quinn is he got to prepare for two games against EB and Howell. That gives him a pretty good preliminary evaluation coming in. EB’s offense, as we suspected, was found lacking.
  12. Basically this for me. If it’s overblown or not true, the Bears will take him. If they don’t, we probably don’t want him either.
  13. I'm old enough to remember when Dan Snyder tried to hire a head coach with experience and then he read the message boards and we ended up saying hip hip hooray for a few weeks before we hired a bingo caller to call plays.
  14. Think of this like like you are interviewing candidates for a job in your own profession. Would you be biased toward people who have never done the job before, but have the right skillset for it? Or would you interview people who might have already done the job (even if they had a mixed bag of success)? Generally speaking, job experience is a good thing. Even if that experience includes some failures. People learn from their experiences and improve the next time they get a chance. NFL has their weird dynamic where coaches get one shot with one organization and then get buried down the list of candidates in the future because everyone is trying to get lucky and hire the next McVay. I know nothing (personally) about Quinn other than he had coached top defenses in Seattle and Dallas, and took Atlanta to a super bowl. He's had enough success in his career that it's not crazy to think he could be a better coach here than he was in Atlanta.
  15. There was no way it wasn’t being included in the sale. That’s a valuable asset for Angelos. The hope has to be the new owners are more willing to reach a settlement.
  16. We could do a lot worse than Quinn. He's got a wide depth and breadth of experience and hiring him would make a key rival worse. He's been an excellent DC at two different gigs, and took a team to a super bowl. Yeah he floundered toward the end with Atlanta but a lot of that might have been Matt Ryan just getting old.
  17. My somewhat controversial QB ranking is Maye, Williams, McCarthy, Daniels. Big caveat that the knock on Caleb is only related to some of the personality/coachability concerns. If your interview process with him makes you feel good, he’s hands down #1.
  18. Trumped/trump Cannot for the life me figure out why.
  19. Let’s put it this way. Goff put up great stats with Mcvay and Mcvay dumped him (and won a Super Bowl with his replacement). Goff is who he is. He’s ok. He can distribute the football well. He’s never going to wow you and make the kind of individual plays that can change the game. The fact Johnson can say he “improved” Goff over even the stats he had with Mcvay speaks volumes to his chops as an OC.
